COLD TEMPERATURES MAKES FOR GOOD HOT RACING! by: Dennis Grabenbauer MARSHALLTOWN, IA (May 23) - Even after rain and cold temperatures returned this past Friday night at the Marshalltown Speedway, racers and fans would stay dry and warm with the hot racing action on the high-banked quarter mile raceway as week number three roared to life. One hundred and fourteen race teams would be on hand to compete on the smooth and very racy speedway. Marshalltown’s Evening Optimist club hosted the evening, as they played host to the kids by letting every youngster in free to the races. “This is just another great way for our club to give something special to the youngsters”, said club member Duane Davis. “We work for the youth in our community and we want our youth to enjoy the community. This is a great way to partner with promoter Toby Kruse in giving something the kids will enjoy, a free ticket to the races”. Even with the strong east wind, the crowd was good, and the enthusiasm was even higher than might be expected. “This was just another one of those tough days we have had to go through this season, but in the end everyone had a great time, and the races, well they were typical, very good races”, said Kruse. The night would not start out the right way for Dwarf Car driver Joel Huggins, as he would roll his car off of turn heat in the opening Dwarf Car heat race. He was not injured, the car was not badly damaged, and he would return to run the feature event. Through out all feature events, fans would be thrilled with two and three wide racing with minimal yellow flag caution laps, and many lead changes. Johnny Mordock would get the Dwarf Car feature started by leading lap one, before giving away to Jeff Stensland on lap two. Stensland would lead a four wide group of cars until lap five when last weeks winner Andy Hennigar would take the lead. The next remaining seven laps Hennigar would have to battle Troy Hudson. The two would exchange the lead the lead until Hudson made the past for the lead on lap ten, work his way through lap traffic, then would go on to be the third driver in many weeks to score a victory. Behind Hudson was point leader Mike Morrill followed by Hennigar and Eric Hendrickson. Shawn Simatovich would lead his opening lap in the I.M.C.A. Sport Mod feature but only the opening lap. Austin Lucas would take the lead when Simatovich pushed up the speedway on lap two. A yellow for a multi-car incident on lap two would bunch up the field on the restart. Two-time and point leader Kevin Sather, appeared to be on his way to his third win as he would take the lead on lap six. By lap nine, Lucas again charged back into the lead. As Lucas and Sather were fighting for the race lead, Luke Wanninger would pull to the back bumpers of the two, then with three laps to go, Wanninger would make a low side pass and go on to win for the second time this year, the first win coming at the Frostbuster in April. Behind Wanninger at the finish would be Lucas followed by Sather and Neil Follett in forth, posting his best finish of the year. Erick Flander and Dusty Vis would start on the front row and stay side by side during the first four laps of the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car feature. The two would exchange the lead almost every lap with Vis finally getting by Flander on lap five. With Vis out in front he would quickly run up on the lap traffic and by lap nine, the lap traffic would break his racing rhythm. Rick Brown who started in the sixth starting position was running the high side of the racetrack and was quickly catching the leaders. Brown would over take one position nearly each lap before passing the leader Vis in heavy lap traffic with five laps remaining. Brown would keep his Ford Thunderbird flying high as he would go on to score his first win of the season. Finishing second was Dave Atcher followed by last week winner Dustin Smith with Flander coming home forth, in the green to checkered eighteen-lap event. Opening night feature John Logue would again top the field in the Meskwaki Casino & Hotel I.M.C.A. Modified feature. Logue would start the twenty lap race in the twelfth starting spot, use the high line, and take the lead with five circuits to go to score the victory. Scott Hogan would lead the opening lap, until Brett Ladehoff would take the top spot on lap two. Ladehoff would lead up to lap fifteen when Logue made his pass in traffic for the win. Behind Logue was Hogan, Ladehoff and Tim Murty. Eric Knutson would lead from start to finish in the Junction Bar & Grille I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock event with close two and three wide racing following him in every corner. The last time Knutson would go to victory was the final night in the 2007 season. Finishing behind Knutson would be Josh Irvine, Dustin Elliott and Michael Murphy. The season marches on next Friday night with the Minuteman Printing / Tag’s Night at the Speedway. There will be a 410-Sprint Car that will be on display next Friday night with all Tag’s sponsored drivers having a autograph session in the concourse area before next Friday night’s event. The gates will open at 5:30 with hot laps starting at 6:45 and the first race of the night will begin at 7:30.
