NEW NAMES AND FACES WIN AT MARSHALLTOWN by:Dennis Grabenbauer MARSHALLTOWN, IA (May 30) - For the forth consecutive week race promoter Toby Kruse would have to look at a not perfect race track, and have to make a decision on whether or not to race. And for the forth-consecutive week, races were run, when many would not of given the promoter an outside chance of even being able to race. After over five inches of hard rain fell in the area just one night before, it appeared from early Friday morning, that it would not be possible. “The track was tight and probably the only thing that really saved us this week was the fact that the rain came so hard, that it wash off of the racing surface, allowing our crew to work things in. We even had to add a little water to the high side of the track, before we could race, not much but we did ad some,” said Kruse. Not only was there a full show of regular racing this past Friday night, but also Ed Gifford brought his Minute-Man Printing 410-Sprint Car to the track for his yearly night at the speedway. The fans would be surprised to see Meswaki I.M.C.A. Modified driver Jimmy Gustin piloting the wing-warrior in times of 13:23 seconds. Plus Blake Peterson had his I.M.C.A. Late Model that was taking a few hot laps in preparation to the Miller Lite 50 that will be coming to town on Tuesday June 10th. So there definitely was something for everyone this past Friday night as one hundred three race teams signed in to compete on the high-banked quarter mile raceway. Before the night of racing was able to get off and running, promoter Toby Kruse made the announcement of how the Marshalltown Speedway would take an active part in lending a helping hand to the victims of the Parkersburg tornado. “We want to adopt a needy family who the speedway and fans can help. We have been approached and we are going to help out any way we can. I want people to go to our web site at www.marshalltownspeedway.com and we will have a family’s name and their needs on our site and we will be getting involved in helping them through this very tough time. All of us are lucky, the many people in Parkersburg were not, and we want to help,” said Kruse. The racing action on the night would continue to keep the fans on the edge of the seats as close racing in the heat races and main events would keep everyone wanting for more as the night would come to an end at 9:45. Troy Hudson might of not had as much fun as the rest, as he would get upside down in the first Dwarf Car heat race of the night, he would not be hurt, but it would end his night of competition. Mike Morrill would start the Dwarf Car feature in the tenth starting position, march through the field take the lead at the half way point and go on to score his second win of the season. Morrill would pass early race leader Joel Huggins who would hold on to finish second. Andy Hennigar would finish third followed by Jeff Stensland in forth. Twenty-five I.M.C.A. Sport Mods would take the green flag with Brett Moffitt leading the opening lap. Moffitt who started up front would run up from for the first nine laps, but would give up the top spot to Luke Wanninger who had marched through the field from his eleventh place starting spot to take the lead on lap ten. Wanninger would hold off challenges by point leader Kevin Sather the remaining five laps to pick up his second point win of the year. Sather would finish second with Moffitt third and Joe Docekal forth. Trent Murphy would lead the first three laps of the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car feature before falling out of the top five before the race would end. Damon Murty, made a pass for the lead on lap four then would hold the top spot for the next ten circuits before a yellow flag would slow the action with four laps to go. The yellow would come out for second, third and fifth running spots who all involved in an incident coming off of turn four. This would allow Luke Veren to restart on the back bumper of Murty. Murty would get the jump on the restart but Veren wasted no time in closing in on Murty. On the white flag lap, Veren would make a low pass to take the lead and win. Murty would finish second with Dustin Smith third and Brian Irvine forth. Rookie driver Kyle Krampe looked nothing like a rookie in the first half of the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel I.M.C.A. Modified feature by hitting his mark on the track and keeping the rest of the field behind him. Krampe would hold off Jerry Luloff during the first ten laps but Vern Jackson would make a low side pass on lap to twelve to take the lead and eventually go on to score his first win of the year. Point leader Jimmy Gustin would finish second followed by Luloff and Scott Hogan. Krampe would finish fifth, his best finish of the year. Jamie Schirm started up front and ran up front for the first ten laps of the Junction Bar & Grille I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock feature before point leader Chris Luloff went to the high side for the pass for the lead and win. Schirm was slowed in his march to the checkers by a lap seven yellow, which allowed Luloff to close in on the restart. When the checkered flag fell, Michael Murphy finished second followed by Josh Irvine and Scott Durlin, bring an end to a great night of racing. The season jumps into June next Friday night and the Day’s Inn King of the Hill race will be run. Grandstand will open at 5:30, hot laps at 6:45 and the first race in June will begin at 7:30.
