LOCAL PASTORS EXPERIENCE THE RACING ACTION!
by: Denny GrabenbauerMARSHALLTOWN, IA (June 13) - Friday brought
the end to two nights of racing action this week which featured the Deery
Brothers Summer Series on Tuesday night for I.M.C.A. Late Models and Friday
night it was another action packed night of racing which feature area
pastor’s in competition during the “Faster Pastor” race.
Drivers and crews would have to battle the flooding in the central Iowa area
to compete. Teams from Nebraska and Illinois were on hand Tuesday night as
Terry Neal would out distance Marshalltown driver Darrel DeFrance to win the
Miller Lite 50. This was Neal’s sixteenth career victory in the series and
it would be the seventh different winner the series would have this year.
Race fans and teams would find a near perfect night when the gates opened on
Friday night. Area pastors would take their turn in taming the high-banked
quarter mile raceway, much to the delight of the capacity crowd. Driving
borrowed race cars the newly found race drivers would have their hands full
trying to figure out how to make their cars go faster. At the end of the
special event, Pastor Paul McDermott would make the pass on the low side of
the track on last year’s winner Pastor Bob Kosbau to enjoy the victory. “We
just want to thank all the participating church’s that took part in this
event,” said promoter Toby Kruse. “It’s good to see new groups of fans
coming in to cheer these drivers on as they compete in this once a year
event.”
Mike Morrill would continue his winning ways by winning his third feature in
a row in the Dwarf Car feature event. The lead would be traded off through
five drivers before Morrill would take the lead with one lap to go, when
then leader Troy Hudson would spin in turn two giving Morrill the lead and
the win. Second place would go to Andy Hennigar followed by Joel Huggins and
Mike Kennedy.
Point leader Kevin Sather would go to victory twice this week by winning the
Tuesday night feature and then would follow that up with a victory in the
I.M.C.A. Sport Mod feature. Ryan Ashton and Tim Love would share the lead
through the first six laps until Sather made his high side pass for the lead
and eventually the win. Brad Iverson would finish second, his best of the
year, followed by Paul Nagel and Kyle Brown.
One week ago Brian Irvine would come home in the second position, but on
this Friday night, Irvine improved his finishing position one spot and take
the victory in the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car feature. One yellow on lap
three would be the only thing that would stop Irvine. He would take the lead
on the restart and lead the final fifteen laps in scoring the victory.
Finishing second was Rick Brown followed by Damon Murty and Sean Johnson.
After finishing runner up four times this season, Friday night point leader
Jimmy Gustin would have everything going his way as he would post his first
feature win of the season in the Meskwaki Casino Hotel I.M.C.A. Modified
class. Brett Ladehoff would lead until lap eight when Gustin would make the
pass for the lead. Vern Jackson would finish second followed by Ladehoff and
Tim Murty.
Curt Hilmer would lead the opening four laps in the Junction Bar & Grille
I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock feature in the last race of the night. Jamie Schirm
would take the lead on lap four of the green to checkered twelve-lap event.
A flat tire would force Schirm to the pits on lap seven, handing the lead to
last week’s winner Doug Smith. Then just when it appeared Smith was going to
make it two for two, rear end trouble would force him out of the race giving
the lead over to Beau Kaplan. Kaplan would stay high on the track the final
two circuits to pick up the win. Dustin Elliott would finish second in his
best finish of the year followed by Todd Reitzer and Michael Leffler.
Next Friday night will be the Arnold Motor Supply Mid-Season event. Race
fans will be joined by area Little Leaguers who will be taking part in the
evening. There will also be a Day’s Inn “King of the Hill” event for the
I.M.C.A. Sport Mods. The gates will open at 5:30 with hot-laps at 6:45 and
the first race of the night will get underway at 7:30.
