ARNOLD MOTOR SUPPLY MID-SEASON
By Denny GrabenbauerMARSHALLTOWN, IA (June 20) - As time passes us by,
it’s almost hard to believe that we are at the half waypoint of the racing
season already. With a span of four weeks of racing that were lost to
“mother nature” there now has been six weeks in a row that have been run,
and hopefully their will be no breaks in the season again. “Last year we
lost five nights, we have lost four already, so really we are on target of
other years,” commented promoter Toby Kruse. “You just never really know
what to expect, we just have to plan on racing every week and think positive
and everything will work out just fine.”
When summer officially began at 6:59 Friday evening, the near capacity crowd
along with the Marshalltown Little Leaguers were on there feet cheering that
the long winter and spring season was finally over. Friday night marked the
Arnold Motor Supply Mid-Season classic with one hundred and nine race teams
and one driver coming from Richland Minnesota to compete. Friday night would
also be the night another driver would be crowned King of the Hill winner as
Brett Meyer would ad his name to the list of drivers that will be competing
for the Day’s Inn King of the Speedway that will take place on August 29th.
Todd Reitzler would ad his name to the list of first time winners at the
speedway by picking up his victory in the Junction Bar & Grill I.M.C.A.
Hobby Stock feature. Curt Hilmer would lead the early going before having
car trouble and would finish deep in the field. Reitzler would use his keen
driving skills avoiding crashing cars to take the lead at the halfway point,
work around lap traffic with two to go and taking the win. Finishing second
was Dustin Elliott followed by point leader Josh Irvine and Josh Saunders
who would have his best finish of the year.
Luke Veren would become the first driver to score multiple wins in the
Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car feature. Veren who last won on week four would
have his hands full of three and four wide racing and early leader Joe
Luethje. Luethje, who was looking for his first career feature would be the
class of the field, as he would run the topside of the racetrack. Many
drivers would challenge down low, but Luethje always seemed to keep his
momentum that would keep him in the lead. At one point in the race, the top
four would go across the finish line nearly four wide. Luethje would lose
the lead on lap twelve, but would stay in contention right to the end. Veren
would go on to score his second win of the year. Rick Brown would finish
second followed by Luethje and Damon Murty.
A three car front straight a way crash would slow the Meswaki I.M.C.A.
Modified feature nearly 20-minutes at the start of the event. With three,
four and event five cars wide, Jay Schmidt, Jerry Luloff and Don Erger would
run out of room causing the three car incident. Brian Kunkel would lead the
opening lap but it would be second week winner Scott Hogan who would take
the lead on lap six and never look back. Running clear on the top side of
the track, no one would come close for the remaining fourteen laps as Hogan
worked his way through lap traffic right to the end. Finishing second would
be point leader Jimmy Gustin followed by Tim Murty and John Logue.
Point leader Kevin Sather would come out on top once again by winning his
forth feature of the season in the I.M.C.A. Sport Mod event. Sather would
take the lead from Kyle Brown at the half waypoint of the race and go on for
the victory. Luke Wanninger, Brown and Zach Rawlins would round out the top
four.
Troy Hudson would be back in victory lane again in the Dwarf Car feature.
After posting his victory during week three, Hudson has rolled his car, spun
out and had plenty of bad luck to last him the rest of the season. But good
luck came back to him on Friday night as he posted his second feature of the
year. Hudson would take the lead on lap three then hold off point leader
Mike Morrill to seal the victory. Finishing third was Tim Hennigar followed
by Andy Hennigar.
The second half of the season will continue next Friday night with the
grandstand opening at 5:30, hot laps at 6:45 and the first race of the night
will get underway at 7:30.
