Six States Are Represented For “Show Down” at Marshalltown! By Denny Grabenbauer MARSHALLTOWN, IA (July 18) - Friday night was the “Show Down at Mo Town” at the Marshalltown Speedway and what the capacity crowd experienced was somewhat even a surprise to promoter Toby Kruse. One hundred twenty race teams were on hand which included drivers from California, Colorado, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Nebraska and Iowa as they started pulling into Marshalltown late Thursday night. Fresh off the Harris Clash in Knoxville Thursday night, race teams would make there way to town filling up the hotels and restaurants in anticipation of this first annual event. “Wow what a day this was”, said Kruse. “The weather just had all of us on pins and needles all day long. Tracks around us were cancelling and we just kept positive and it all worked out. This is truly a night that people will talk about for some time.” This would be the first time in the history of the speedway drivers from California, North Carolina and Colorado would compete against each other with a total of $1250 going to the first place winner. The twenty-five-lap Meskwaki I.M.C.A. Modified feature would start out with a miss start on the first try. Waterloo’s Joey Schafer would grab the lead on lap one, as the drivers would settle into their racing rhythm. Paul Stone from Winton California would be the hard charger of the night. Stone was involved in the opening lap yellow flag and would have to go to the work area, then would restart in the last starting position. On the start Stone started working his way through the field. By the half waypoint of the event, Stone had worked his way to the tenth position. It would be a two-car battle, as Schaefer and Jimmy Gustin would race bumper-to-bumper working there way at times through lap traffic. Closing in on the two would be 2008 Frost Buster winner Brian Mullen from Seymour Wisconsin. With laps winding down and Schaefer looking like he would go to victory lane, Gustin, Mullen and Stone would close in on the leader. With four laps to go, Schaefer would slide high in turn four opening the door for Gustin to make a low side pass. Mullen would follow Gustin through but Schaefer would battle back to move back into second. With three laps to go, defending point champion and current point leader Gustin would hold the lead to the finish line to score his victory. “I really can’t believe this”, said Gustin in victory lane. “Joey had us covered when he slid high, I was in the right place to take the lead. I happy for the fans and crew I am just happy to be here in victory lane”. Schaefer would finish second followed by Mullen and Stone. Jeff Wollam would make it two wins in as many weeks in the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car feature. Wollam would start in the tenth starting spot, as he would work himself to the front. Trent Murphy would lead the first twelve laps before giving way to Dusty Vis. With five laps to go, Vis would start smoking and with four laps to go he would burst into flames pulling into the pit area ending his chances of victory. Murphy would take back the lead but with three to go, Wollam would charge to the front take the lead a lead he would not give up enroot to his second victory in a row. Murphy, Dustin Smith and Damon Murty would follow Wollam across the finish line. Adam Rickett would win his first heat race of the year in the Junction Bar & Grille I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock class then would lead the first five laps of the feature event. Nick Murty would make a pass on Rickett on lap five to take the top spot. Murty would go on and lead to the checkered flag to win his first feature of the year. Scott Durlin finish second followed by Dustin Elliott and Josh Saunders. For the first time this year a new face would emerge in the I.M.C.A. Sport Mod feature. Austin Lucas would score his first Marshalltown feature win by taking the lead from Tim Love on lap three and hold the top spot to the end. Luke Wanninger would finish second followed by Joel Bushore and Joe Docekal. After winning the Dwarf Car Frost Buster in April, Randy Bryan finally returned to victory lane by winning the feature event this week. With two laps to go, Bryan would take the lead from Tim Hennigar as Hennigar slowed down the front straight a way. Bryan would out distance Andy Hennigar, Eric Hendrickson and Todd Shute to score the victory. The season marches on next Friday night with Hy-Vee Night at the speedway. There will be a Dwarf Car King of the Hill event planned along with the Modified Gambler winner take all special event. Hot laps will begin at 6:45 and the first green flag of the night will begin at 7:30. “Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel” I.M.C.A.
