Foot Power Featured at the Marshalltown Speedway! By Denny Grabenbauer MARSHALLTOWN, IA (August 15) - Friday night will go down into the record books as one of the most wild and talked about nights of the season. Friday night was the annual J & V NAPA New Hope “Cardboard Classic” night as youngsters would make their race cars out of cardboard boxes and race them down the front straight away. As the field would be divided into five groups which also included a class for regular drivers to compete against one another, by using foot-power. Over one hundred cardboard racing cars were on display and would be raced. “Again this year this is really neat”, said promoter Toby Kruse. “It takes some time out of our night, but that’s ok because New Hope does a lot for the kids, they do a lot for the track and this is there way for them to give back, and we enjoy all they do with us at the speedway.” Friday’s racing action would also have some exciting moments as point leads would tighten and some would change while others would almost be decided, as the season begins to wind down. The point chase in the I.M.C.A. Sport Mod division would change hands and the points in the Dwarf Cars would close to within one point. Tim Hennigar would score his third feature win of the season in the Dwarf Car feature. Mike Kennedy would lead the opening three laps before engine trouble would force him to the pit area, then it was Jeff Stensland who would lead on lap four. Stensland would quickly loose the lead to the hard charging Hennigar on lap five. This feature would turn into a race within a race as point leader Mike Morrill would be involved in an incident and would have to restart from the back of the pack. At this point Andy Hennigar would now be the track point leader, but Morrill was not done with four laps to go. Morrill would battle back to finish sixth, and with Andy Hennigar finishing third, Morrill’s point lead now would be only one point going into next weeks, week fifteen. Drama would also follow the finish in the I.M.C.A. Sport Mod feature. Going into the night Kevin Sather would hold a one-point lead over Luke Wanninger. Mark McNeece would lead the opening two laps before Fred Leytham would take the lead on lap three. For the third time in as many weeks, Leytham would have the race decided in over time. When the yellow comes out on the white flag lap, the race is restarted and will finish green, white, checkered. With Leytham leading the yellow would come out bunching the field up behind the leader. On the restart with the race on the line, and the points up for grabs, Wanninger and Leytham would rub coming off of turn four. Wanninger would edge out Leytham at the line to pick up the feature win. Sather would finish a close third but now will trail Wanninger by one point with just two weeks of points to go. McNeece would cross the finish line in forth. Chris Luloff would take the lead from Curt Hilmer in the Junction Bar & Grille I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock feature to go on and win his fifth feature of the season. Eric Knutson would finish second followed by Josh Saunders and Todd Reitzler. Joe Luethje would lead lap one of the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car feature as the cars would go four wide down the front straight a way. Rick Brown would take his turn up front on lap two, but the Ford Thunderbird would pull into the pits on lap seven ending his night. With Brown in the pits, Trent Murphy would take over the lead, but only for a short time, as Jeff Wollam would go to the front. This is when the action on the track would heat up. Wollam, Damon Murty and Luke Veren were all battling for the lead. Coming off of turn four Murty and Veren would get by Wollam, but then Murty and Veren would lock bumpers spinning to the infield, bringing out the yellow flag and giving the lead back to Wollam. Wollam would hold off point leader Dustin Smith till the end to score his forth feature win of the year. Mike O’Lear who has been one of the hottest drivers in the Meswaki I.M.C.A. Modified division the last four weeks would again lead the opening lap and appeared to be on his way to yet another feature win. O’Lear would be in lap traffic by lap six, but a yellow on lap thirteen would bunch the field together for the final seven laps. With five laps to go, O’Lear and point leader Jimmy Gustin would be side by side. A slight bobble coming off of turn two would open the door for Gustin, and he would go on to score his for feature of the year. O’Lear, Nick Deal and Pat Graham would follow Gustin across the finish line. Next Friday night will be “Old Timer’s” Night at the Speedway. Nostalgic Vintage cars will be making there second trip of the year to compete. Next week will also be “teacher night”. Any teacher from any school will be admitted at no charge if they can show their school badge or identification. The gates will open at 5:30, hot laps will begin at 6:45 and the first race of the night will begin at 7:30 MARSHALLTOWN SPEEDWAY FRIDAY August 15, 2008 By Denny Grabenbauer “Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel” I.M.C.A.
