“Teacher Night” at Marshalltown
By Denny Grabenbauer

MARSHALLTOWN, IA (August 22) - With a back-to-school-buzz filling the air, Friday night was designated as “Teacher Night” allowing all area teachers to come to the speedway free of charge as the school year quickly approaching. Friday night was also Old Timer night, as Vintage racecars were on hand to show off the cars of yesterday racing today.

Fans were delighted as one hundred and twenty race teams signed in to compete on the high-banked quarter mile raceway in front of the near capacity crowd. Through the course of the night, the racing action would be close and sometimes to close as the yellow flag would come out numerous times. “It’s hard to figure out sometimes”, said promoter Toby Kruse. “The track was near perfect. A high line and a low line, but the track also was very fast and when you have that type of combination, it seems easier for drivers to get into trouble and that is what happened tonight.”

With point leads up for grabs, the racing would be quite intense as drivers were trying to get the best finishes they could with the season winding down. Two points separate two of the five classes and the other divisions their champions are already determined. One new first time winner would emerge to victory lane in the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Cars, with the rest being won by drivers who has previously picked up feature wins.

Dwarf Car point leader Mike Morrill would take the lead from Andy Hennigar with one lap to go to score his sixth feature win of the year. Hennigar who took the lead from Mike Kennedy would appear to be able to hold off Morrill, but Morrill changed his line, moved to the top of the track to make the pass for the lead and pad his point lead to 2-points going into the last night of racing. Morrill and Hennigar would have a race within a race through out the twelve-lap event with the two drivers trying to have the point lead going into championship night. Troy Hudson would finish third followed by Eric Hendrickson.

Doug Smith would go on and win his forth feature of the year in the Junction Bar & Grille I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock feature. Russell Keefer in his rookie season would lead the opening two laps before Smith would storm to the front. Smith would hold off Dustin Elliott and Chris Luloff through out the last laps to pick up the victory. Finishing forth was Jennifer Hulin.

Andy Bryant would lead the first half of the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car feature, but Trent Murphy would lead the second half of the eighteen-lap event. The multi-groove track would keep Bryant in front of his challengers as everyone would try to run low, but Bryant stayed high and stayed in the lead. Rick Brown would challenge but would finish in forth. Point leader Dustin Smith would work his way into the second position behind Murphy followed by Bryant at the checkered flag.

One of the hottest drivers in the Meswaki I.M.C.A. Modifieds would again show everyone the quick way around the speedway, as Mike O’Lear would win his third feature of the year. Kyle Krampe would lead the opening lap before David Brown would take his turn at the top spot before O’Lear went high and took the lead, a lead he would not give up. Point lead Jimmy Gustin would put the pressure on midway through the race but Gustin would be no match for O’Lear. Gustin would finish second followed by Vern Jackson and Jay Schmidt.

It would take three starts before one green flag lap would be scored in the I.M.C.A. Sport Mod feature and it would be veteran driver Bill Hildreth who would lead the opening lap. Neil Follett would then take his turn at the top before point leader Luke Wanninger charged to the front on lap three and never look back. Kevin Sather finished second followed by Fred Leytham and Austin Lucas.

Next Friday night will be the season ending championships with all of the pre-race ceremonies starting at 7:30. Also featured next Friday night will be the Day’s Inn King of the Speedway event. The gates will open at 5:30 and hot laps will begin at 6:45.
