HAVOC ON THE HIGH BANKS BRINGS SEASON TO A CLOSE!
MARSHALLTOWN, IA (Sept 28) - The 2008 racing season would come to an end
Sunday night with the second annual “Havoc on the High Banks”. A speedway
record of one hundred sixty nine race teams would sign in to tackle the
high-banked quarter mile raceway for the final time. One might think the
weather would be the lasting memory of this year’s season, but for promoter
Toby Kruse his memories will be of the following he is seeing from
competitors and fans through out the racing community. “Tonight is a perfect
example of the support we are getting from the racers and fans at our track.
I am just so proud and appreciative of everyone for all they do with and for
us”, explained Kruse. We set a record car count tonight, and all I can now
look forward to is the day we hit two-hundred entries, and it could be on
our Frost Buster afternoon in April 2009.”
Drivers throughout Iowa would make the trip, some for the first time, others
just to be involved with Kruse and his building tradition. Fans from Arizona
were on hand along with the others who would fill the grandstand for the
final time this year. “Our weekly drivers are starting to receive National
recognition and that’s showing everyone that we are sincere on taking care
of our competitors by giving them a solid and good place to race.”
Jimmy Gustin would stay perfect in “Havoc” competition by again winning the
Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel Modified class. Gustin would lead the entire
25-lap event in route to scoring this years victory. Challenged many times,
but always answering with his smooth driving skills, Gustin would take the
victory over Mark Elliott, Mike O’Lear and Darrin Duffy.
It would be another Gustin, young Ryan Gustin making his first appearance at
the speedway that would go home the winner in the Aarons Stock Car event.
Gustin would make a low side pass on Damon Murty just pass the halfway point
to secure the victory in his first night of racing at the famed quarter
mile. Behind the young Gustin would be the veteran Rick Brown followed by
Clay Deppe and Jeff Wollam.
Nate Chudor would make the trip from Lake Mills Iowa a complete one, by
taking the victory in the Sport Mod feature. Chudor was involved in a lap
one incident and half to restart at the end of the twenty-four-car field. He
would work his way to the front using the smooth racing surface to his
liking. Chudor would glue himself to the back bumper of leader Austin Kaplan
as the two would run side by side for a handful of laps before taking the
lead with two laps to go. Behind Chudor and Kaplan would be Brian Schrage
and Austin Lucas when the checkered flag fell.
Justin Maschke would maker his first appearances at the speedway work out
for him as he would pick up the “Havoc” win in the Junction Bar & Grill
Hobby Stock event. Only Kenny Hansen would try to be the spoiler as the two
would exchange the lead during the final three laps with the win going to
Maschke by less than a car length. Rob Allison finished third with Adam
Hagen finishing forth.
Track Champion Mike Morrill would again find himself in victory lane in the
Dwarf Car division, as he would lead the caution marred event to go on and
score the victory. DJ Schmalzried, Troy Hudson and Andy Hennigar would round
out the top four.
For the second time this season the Karl’s Chevrolet Dirt Trucks would strut
their stuff and when the race was over Brett Moyer would pick up the win. Ed
Nelson and Mike Hoffman would round out the top spots.
When the checkered flags were thrown at 9:52, the season now is officially
over and all anyone has is the memory of yet another successful season.
“Again I just want to say thanks to everyone who is involved with our
program in making this one of the most successful racing faculties in the
country,” concluded Kruse.
The year-end awards banquet will be on Saturday November 8th at the
Conventions and Visitor Building located on the Central Iowa Fairgrounds.
