Large Car Count For Season Opener
by: Dennis Grabenbauer
MARSHALLTOWN, IA (April 10) - Friday night marked the official opening of
the 2009 racing season at the Marshalltown Speedway and to everyone’s
surprise another large turnout of race teams made opening night one to
remember for a long time. Fresh off the largest car count of one week
earlier, again the pit area would bulge out to the seims as 172 race teams
from Missouri, Wisconsin and Iowa made Marshalltown their opening night. “I
just can’t tell these guys thanks enough for there support they are giving
to us and the race fans here in Marshalltown,” said promoter Toby Kruse.
Thirty races were run through out the night on a racetrack that has never
seen an early part of the season that showed mid-season form. “Our guys
working on the track are the best in the country. This track is perfect. We
are giving our drivers three and four lines to choose from, and that’s why
the teams are coming. They know that they can expect a perfect track each
and every race night”.
Six B-main events would be required through out the evening just to make up
the twenty-four starting line ups. “When you have to qualify through heats
and B-mains, race fans are truly watching the best of the best race in the
feature events and that is why our grandstand are full.”
Numerous caution flags would fly throughout all of the feature events, which
would allow the field to be bunched up many times during each feature,
putting the pressure on the lead cars to hold there position.
Mike Morrill would make it two wins in a row by winning last weeks Frost
buster and this week’s opening night. Morrill would take the lead from the
drop of the green flag with three wide racing going into turn one. By lap
eight racing traffic would be strung out all the way around the speedway
with lap cars giving a challenge to Morrill. Morrill would lead to the wire
but was challenged by the Henagar’s Tim and Andy who would finish second and
third. Joel Huggins would come across the line in forth.
Frost buster winner Kevin Sather would also repeat and go to victory lane
for the second week in a row in the Big 8 Tyre I.M.C.A. Sport Mod feature.
Leading from start to finish, Sather was not to be denied his feature win,
as he would out distance defending track and National Champion Luke
Wanninger. Scott Davis would finish third with Joel Bushore coming home
forth.
Trent Murphy would lead the entire eighteen lap Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car
feature but at times with three wide racing you never knew who was going to
take the top spot until the checkered flag was dropped. Finishing behind
Murphy was Steve Meyer who was in contention and right on the back bumper of
Murphy’s. Defending track champion Dustin Smith finished third with Shawn
Hoskins finishing forth.
2008 Gambler winner Joey Schaefer would again find himself in victory lane
by scoring the victory in the Meskwaki I.M.C.A. Modified feature. With five
laps to go, positions two through six would battle for position allowing
Schaefer to pull away. But Ryan Rueter would put the pressure on Schaefer
but would fall short and finish second. Jon Snyder and Jimmy Gustin would
round out the top four.
Chad Koch would end the nights racing action by winning the Junction Sports
Bar & Grill I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock feature. Terry Shaffar would put the
pressure on Koch until a slight bobble would have him going back to the
fifth position. Finishing second was Devin Smith followed by Justin Lichty
and Michal Murphy.
Week number two will roar to life next Friday night and featured during the
night will be the Americas Best Value Inn Hobby Stock King of the Hill
event. The evening will begin with hot laps at 6:45 and the first race of
the evening getting underway at 7:30.
