MARSHALLTOWN, IA (May 22) - After two consecutive weeks of rain outs, the much anticipated week number five was able to run on a near perfect Friday evening as 135 race teams ventured to the high-banked quarter mile speedway. Friday night was the second night of the week that race fans would be treated to close and exciting racing. On Wednesday night the USMTS Modified series made their first visit to the famed quarter mile and when the final checkered flag fell, Jon Tesch from Watertown South Dakota would out distance the Oklahoma driver Jason Hughes for the 40-lap victory. Zach VanderBeek from New Sharon would finish third with Marshalltown’s Ryan Gustin finishing forth. “This has been quite a week of racing here,” said promoter Toby Kruse. “Wednesday night we had a field of cars that race fans just read about and we had them here.” Also making an appearance were NASCAR drivers Kenny Wallace and Kenny Schrader both making their homes at Concord North Carolina. Both drivers compete in the series and neither had ever been here before wanted to see what all the talk around the country is about. “This is a great facility,” said Schrader. “I’ve talked with Toby a lot around the country and he always would ask me to come, it worked out for me to be here and I’m glad I did.” Schrader would finish ninth while Wallace finished thirteenth. Marshalltown’s Dave Atcher who was making his first appearance of the season won the Stock Car feature. Todd Reitzler picked up the win in the Hobby Stocks and Kevin Sather scored another win in the Sport Mod division. Friday night was a night when all kids would be admitted free courtesy of the Marshalltown Evening Optimist night. The club would also treat the youngsters to a sandwich and drink. The racing action would prove to be one of the best night of the season with three and four wide racing plus passing though out in every one of the feature events. In a unprecedented night, all feature winners would come from the fifth and six rows starting positions. Winner streaks would be on the line for two drivers. Mike Morrill and Kevin Sather had been unbeatable during the first nights of the year. At the end of the night only one would maintain the name “Mr. Perfect” going into week number six. Mike Morrill would start in the eleventh starting spot in the Mod-Lite Dwarf Car feature and on lap six the number 6 would take the lead a lead he would not give up. Morrill would out distance Tim Hennigar who finished second, followed by Dusty Masolini and Eric Hendrickson. Kevin Sather would have his winning streak snapped in the Big 8 Tyre Center I.M.C.A. Sport Mod class but would be right there at the end but would come up short and finish fifth. Scott Davis would take the lead just pass the half way mark of the race then would have to hold off 14-year old Jake Strayer and Paul Nagle for the win. Point leader Dustin Smith would start in the tenth starting position of the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car feature. Smith worked his way to the front by lap six, then would hold off Trent Murphy and Dusty Vis to score his third win of the year. Adam Larson rolled off ninth in the Meswaki Bingo Casino I.M.C.A. Modified feature and would use the low line of the speedway to go on to score his third win of the year over Vern Jackson and defending track champion Jimmy Gustin. In the final event of the night Devin Smith would win his first Junction Sports Bar & Grill I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock feature of the year, and he would do this by starting in the thirteenth starting position. Wednesday’s winner Reitzler would finish second followed by Pete Hutzel and Mike Timm. The season will continue next Friday night with the U.A.W. “Cliff Chambers” Memorial that was rained out earlier in the season. Gates will open a 5:30. Hot laps will begin at 6:45 and the first race of the night will get underway at 7:30.
