“Cliff Chambers” Memorial Ads New Drivers to Crown Jewel Event MARSHALLTOWN, IA (May 29) - The 21st annual “Cliff Chambers Memorial” has now been put into the history of the Marshalltown Speedway as the event was run this past Friday night in front of a packed grandstand and a pit area full of racers ready to put their names in the speedway history books. After rain cancelled the event three weeks earlier, it would be a matter of who would add their name to one of the “crown jewel” events. Again this week, winners would come well back into the starting line ups, as drivers would again show poise on a wide smooth race track that would produce close three and four wide racing around the high-banked quarter mile raceway. Mike Morrill would again has his winning streak challenged in the Mod-Lite Dwarf Car division, but again this week luck would be the key factor as Morrill would stay perfect through the first six weeks of racing. Morrill would have to answer to challenges by Tim and Andy Hennigar but good luck by Morrill and bad luck by the Hennigar’s would be the difference in keeping the streak alive. D.J. Robinson would lead in the early going, but it was Charlie Brown who proved to be the surprise of the night by leading up to lap eleven before Morrill would take the top spot. Then with two laps to go, Andy Hennigar would drop to the infield ending his battle for the win and turning it over to Morrill. Behind Morrill was Brown, Eric Hendrickson and Randy Bryan. After a one-week absence, Kevin Sather would again work his magic in the Big 8 Tyre Center I.M.C.A. Sport Mod feature by passing Luke Wanninger on the final lap to restart his winning ways. Wanninger, Paul Nagel and last week’s feature winner Scott Davis would follow Sather across the finish line. Point leader Dustin Smith would work his way to the front in the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car feature. Smith would run the high side of the track and take the lead on lap twelve of the eighteen-lap event. Trent Murphy would have a lap car open the door for Smith and would finish a close second. Dusty Vis and Damon Murty would round out the top four. Defending track champion Jimmy Gustin would take the lead on lap four of the Meswaki Bingo Casino Hotel I.M.C.A. Modified feature and never look back. This would be Gustin’s first win of the season and his third “Cliff Chambers” event. Last weeks winner Adam Larson would finish second followed by point leader Jon Snyder and Joey Schaffer. Gene Nicklas would visit victory lane for the first time since 2004 in winning the Junction’s Sports Bar & Grill I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock feature. Nicklas would make a last lap pass coming off of turn four in a pack of five cars to take the win. In the close finish behind Nicklas was Todd Reitzler, Dustin Elliott and Terry Shaffar. In the final event of the night, Jon Snyder would out distance Jay Schmidt in the Americas Best Value Inn King of the Hill event. Racing continues next Friday night with Minuteman night at the speedway. The winner of the Modified feature will race in a match race with a Sprint Car owned by Ed Gifford. The gate will open at 5:30, hot laps will begin at 6:45 and the first green flag of the night will get underway at 7:30.
