It Would Be A Full Night of Racing at Marshalltown
by: By Denny Grabenbauer

MARSHALLTOWN, IA (June 5) - It was a near perfect night this past Friday night as week number seven and “Minuteman” night at the speedway proved to be one of the most competitive nights of the season.  This is the annual event where a winged Sprint Car goes head to head with the winner of the Modified feature.  The match race would be the last race of the evening and the fans would find themselves on their feet as the two unlikely cars would go right to the end for a photo finish.

Sprint Car driver Dusty Zomar from Sioux Falls South Dakota would face the challenge of Adam Larson the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Modified feature winner of the evening.  The catch, in the ten lap race, the Sprint car would run 10-laps and the Modified would run 8-laps.  In past years the Sprint Car would pull out the victory but on this night Larson would win the event by a mere 8-inches at the line.  “I’ve never seen a match race like this and to be in this, this is just amazing,” said Zomar after the event.  “This was really cool and I have to thank Ed for letting me do this.”  Larson, the winner was just as excited about the out come.  “I could hear him coming and all I could think of was trying to stay out of his way when he goes around me.  I stayed high coming off of turn four and I wasn’t sure until I looked at the picture that showed I won, it really was neat.”

Larson earned his chance to be in the challenge race by scoring his forth feature win of the season.  Vern Jackson would lead the opening lap but would give way to Jimmy Gustin on lap two.  By lap two, Gustin would feel the pressure of Larson and the two would wage a two-car battle through out the last fourteen laps of the race.  Larson would stay consistent and hold off numerous challenges by Gustin to pick up the victory.  Behind Larson and Gustin would be Jackson and Todd Conrad.

Dustin Smith would win his third feature in a row in the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car division, as luck would play a large part in the victory.  On lap fifteen with Smith running forth, the top three cars would be involved in a mishap between turns three and four.  Smith would sneak through take the lead and go on for the win.  Joe Luethje would finish second followed by Mike Todd and Dave Atcher.

Kyle Brown would be another driver that would use luck to put his car in victory lane in the Big 8 Tyre Center I.M.C.A. Sport Mod feature.  Tom Rawlins would lead the first four laps of the race until Brown would make a pass for the top spot off of turn four.  After a yellow on lap night would bunch up the field, Scott Davis would make the pass for the lead on the restart.  It then looked like Davis would score his second win of the season but with one lap to go, Davis developed engine trouble allowing Brown to make the pass going down the back straight a way giving him the win, his first since 2007.  Davis would limp home in second followed by Brad Iverson and Luke Wanninger.

Devin Smith would take the lead from early race leader Jake Nelson in the Junction Sports Bar & Grill I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock feature to score his second win of the year.  With Smith in the lead, the rest of the field would run green to checkered three wide behind Smith to the checkered flag.  Terry Shaffar, Damien Bown and Todd Reitzler would round out the top four.

“Mr. Perfect” Mike Morrill would keep his impressive winning streak alive once again in the Mod-Lite Dwarf Car feature.  Morrill has been unstoppable week after week as he clearly is pulling away in the point lead.  Behind Morrill this week would be Dusty Masolini, Mike Kennedy and Johnny Mordock.  Mordock would score a victory in the “Gambler” event as the evening was winding down.

The season marches on next Friday night with the yearly “Faster Pastor” event.  The grandstand will open at 5:30.  Hot laps will begin at 6:30, the “Faster Pastor” race will start at 7:15 and the first race of the evening will get under way at 7:30.
