Luck The Key Word For Success on Friday at Marshalltown
By Denny Grabenbauer
MARSHALLTOWN, IA (June 26) For only the second time during the month of
June, race fans were treated to racing action this past Friday night from
the Marshalltown Speedway. Not since June 5th did anything happen at the
speedway because “mother nature” let everyone know that she was the boss,
the rain would fall and the races were cancelled, but this week the racing
would take place as normal.
Friday night was Arnold Motor Supply Mid-Season and with the representatives
of employees and customers eager to see racing action again, no one would
leave with any kind of disappointment. The racing would be close with side
by side racing through out the evening. Luck would prove to be the key word
of the night as drivers would position themselves and let lady luck would
then take over.
Rick Brown who has experienced many disappointing nights in the first half
of the year appeared to have his luck changed in the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock
Car feature as he took the lead on lap two and was starting to pull away
from the field until a broken brake rotor would end his night and continue
his winless streak on lap eight. Getting the lucky break was point leader
Dustin Smith who started in the sixteenth position and would take the lead
just before the halfway point of the race. Smith would cruise to victory for
his fifth of the season and building on his point lead. Tracy Gienger, Jeff
Wollam and Michael Jaennette would round out the top four.
Kevin Sather, point leader in the Big 8 Tyre Center I.M.C.A. Sport Mod class
would not even lead a full lap, but would take the lead on the final lap
coming off of turn two from Michael Grantham who had led the entire event to
score his sixth win of the season. Paul Nagel finished second with Grantham
third and Kyle Brown forth.
Tim Murty would start third and take the lead on the opening lap and
appeared to have things going his way in the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel
I.M.C.A. Modified feature. Murty who was running his best race of the season
would experience his bad luck on lap twelve when he made contact with a lap
car. John Logue who was trailing Murty would take advantage of the incident
and was able to make the pass for the lead. Logue with eight laps remaining
would have to hold off current point lead Jimmy Gustin the remaining laps to
score his first win of the season. Finishing third and forth would be Murty
and Scott Simatovich in a borrowed car.
Todd Reitzler who has been one of the hottest drivers in the Junction Sports
Bar & Grill I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock would take the lead from Adam Rickett on
lap four when a flat tire would force Rickett to the pit area. Reitzler
would appear to be on his way to the win until he experienced engine trouble
on lap nine giving the lead to Eric Knutson who would go on to score his
first win of the year. Nic Shearer finished second with point leader Terry
Shaffar, who won the B-Main; finish third followed by Devin Smith in forth.
Luck would also run out for Mike Morrill in the Mod-Lite Dwarf Cars. Morrill
who has been unbeatable was never a factor in the out come of this week’s
mid-season event. Johnny Mordock would take the early lead before giving way
to a very quick Tim Hennigar. Hennigar was looking for his first win of the
year appeared to have the win in hand until coming off the final corner of
the final lap when Troy Hudson made a high side pass to take the win from
Hennigar. Mordock would finish third and Morrill forth.
The racing season will now move into the very busy month of July. Thursday
night July 2nd will be the final night of the traveling American Stock Car
Shoot-Out series, which will end in Marshalltown. Racing will start at 7:00
on Thursday night. Friday night will be racing as usual with the regular
starting time of 7:30. Friday night there will be bike races for the kids.
Race fans can take advantage of carload night on Friday night. Carloads will
be admitted to the grandstand for $30. Then the car that has the most people
in them will receive a $100 bonus.
