MARSHALLTOWN SPEEDWAY FRIDAY July 2, 2003
By Denny Grabenbauer

MARSHALLTOWN, IA (July 3) - Two nights of races action were to be the talk of the racing community this past week, but rain would be the only thing race fans and teams would take part in on Friday night as night number two was cancelled due to a constant light rain that fell in the area.

Thursday night drivers and fans from five states stayed in the Marshalltown area with competition close as drivers tackled the high banked quarter mile raceway, many for the very first time.

When the final checkered flag fell on Thursday night, Brian Blessington from Breda walked away with his second Shoot-Out win in as many years.  Blessington who had to qualify out of one of the three B-Main events and would start in the twenty-third starting position would work his way to the front with ten laps to go to take the lead and hold off close competition right to the end in the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car division.  Jeff Joldersma from McClelland Iowa would finish a close second and would win the over all point total.

Climbing from his winning car in victory lane Blessington was very thankful and very humble.  “I have been racing a long time.  Even though I might of being the defending champion, I also know that you have to have things going your way and have some luck on your side.  Tonight I did and it worked out and here I am in victory lane again,” said Blessington.

Kevin Sather would also repeat as the winner of the Big 8 Tyre Center I.M.C.A. Sport Mod class.  This would be a back-to-back Shoot Out win for Sather.

Kenny Hansen who made his first trip to the speedway would lead start to finish in the Junction Sports Bar & Grill I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock feature to secure the win.

After coming off a near perfect on night on Thursday night it would turn into a forgettable night on Friday night.  With constant rain showers promoter Toby Kruse would experience the good and bad all within a 24-hour period.  “Tonight was just terrible, I hate it for the drivers and fans.  All they can say is that we tried; we just couldn’t get a break.  But next week we will be at it again, and hopefully we will forget about tonight,”

Racing will continue next Friday night with the “Show Down at Mo-town”.  Extra cash money will be up for grabs for the winner of the Modified feature event.  The gates will open at 5:30, hot laps will begin at 6:45 and the first race of the night will get underway at 7:30.
