“Show-Down” at Marshalltown
By Denny Grabenbauer

MARSHALLTOWN, IA (July 10) - Friday night would turn out to be an interesting night as finally week number nine was able to be run and put into the racing books at the Marshalltown Speedway. With a rainstorm that dropped more than an inch of rain in the area on Friday morning, things would work out just right for promoter Toby Kruse in preparing for the evenings events. “At 11:00 Friday morning, I wouldn’t of given you any chance that we would be racing, but we went by what the weather man was telling us, and this time he was right, there was nothing else behind the mid-morning storm.” Even though Kruse would play the odds, it would start to sprinkle after the first feature of the night. “I really thought we were in trouble”, said Kruse. “But it quit right away and it even made the track better than it was before the sprinkle, so tonight I felt like we was able to put on a show that our fans deserve”.

The “Show-Down” at Marshalltown attracted many new faces and one driver, Jeff Hunter from Henderson Colorado was on hand to race for the extra cash that was put up for this second annual event. Twenty-four cars would start the twenty-lap Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel I..M.C.A. Modified event . Three yellow flags would slow the event in the early going before the field would get into there racing rhythm. Jacob Murray would start on the pole position and lead the entire twenty-laps. As Murray started to build up a sizable lead, a yellow on lap fifteen would bunch the field together for the last five laps. On the restart Brett Ladehoff would give Murray all the pressure he could handle, but the Hartford native would stay focused and would end up leading from start to finish to record his first ever win at Marshalltown. “I really can’t believe I finally won here. This is one of most competitive tracks around and to win here is something I’ve been trying to do for years, but tonight I couldn’t be happier.” Behind Murray were Ladehoff, Adam Larson and Richie Gustin.

Another driver visited victory lane for his first win at the speedway and that was Michael Murphy in the Junction Sports Bar & Grill I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock feature. Clint Nelson and Jennifer Hulin would lead the first three laps before Murphy would take the top spot. Murphy would have things going his way, as he would lead the remaining eight laps to notch his name in the record book. Finishing second was Devin Smith followed by Daniel Hilsabeck and point leader Terry Shaffar.

Clay Deppe would jump into the lead on lap one of the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car feature and lead through the first five laps. A yellow would come out on lap six and on the restart point leader Dustin Smith would take over the lead. Smith would go on to win his sixth feature of the year and build on his point lead. Trent Murphy, Steve Meyer and Ryan Gustin would round out the top four.

Another first time winner would emerge in the Big 8 Tyre Center I.M.C.A. Sport Mod feature. Brad Iverson would become the third first time winner on the night, as he would lead fourteen out of fifteen laps to score his victory. Jake Strayer would take the lead on lap fourteen, then a yellow would come out, so they would line up on the last lap scored. On the green white checkered restart, Strayer and Iverson would race side by side right to the checkered flag and at the line Iverson would have the advantage and he would go on to score the victory. Behind Iverson and Strayer would be Joel Bushore and point leader Kevin Sather.

The Mod-Lite Dwarf Car feature would start off on the wild side as twenty-eight cars would take the green flag. John Gardner would have his world turned upside down as he would roll down the front straight a way bringing out the red flag. Gardner was shaken, but would exit his car on his own and would walk away. Troy Hudson would start up front, work around lap traffic and go on to score his second win of the season. Tim Hennigar, Andy Hennigar and Johnny Mordock would follow Hudson across the finish line.

Racing will resume next weekend as part of the Central Iowa Fair. Friday night will see kids racing their bikes on the track. All children are encouraged to bring their bikes to the track with them next Friday. The gates will open at 5:30, hot laps will be at 7:00 and races will start at 7:30. Then on Saturday the track will open to Quads, Motorcycle and Mini-Sprint races. Grandstand will open at 5:30 with practice to begin at 6:30 and races to follow.
