MARSHALLTOWN, IA (July 17) - It was Aarons Friday night at the Central Iowa fair this past Friday, but you would have almost thought it was a fall night in the area. With a strong northwest wind it didn’t feel like a July night in Iowa, even though we all new it was. “I have to tell you, with the luck we’ve had this year, I will take a cool night in July rather than a chance of rain,” said promoter Toby Kruse. “This weather is just Iowa and like always we take what we are given and we should be happy with what we get.” A one hundred and twenty race teams were on hand to once again take to the near perfect race track, for the first of a two night fair racing program. And again on this night first time winners would find there way to victory lane for the first time, while another driver hadn’t won since opening night in April. Joel Huggins who started racing in the Mod-Lite Dwarf Car series just three years ago had been close but never made the trip to victory lane before. On Friday night he would lead start to finish to score his first career win at Marshalltown and only his second of his career. Starting from outside the front row, Huggins would had to hold off Johnny Mordock until the checkered flag would come out to get the credit for the victory. “I won once at Jefferson and I knew if I just kept trying my win here would come, it did and I am just so happy I finally got another win,” said Huggins in victory lane. Behind Huggins and Mordock was point leader Mike Morrill followed by Tim Hennigar. Trent Murphy picked up his last win on opening night in April in the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car class and ten weeks later would find himself back in victory lane again. Running second in the point standings to Dustin Smith, Murphy would have to battle Smith right to the end to score the victory over Smith, a feat not many drivers have been able to do this year. Fair Board president Jeff Wollam would start ninth and work his way to third. Rob Schneider would have his best finish of the year coming home in forth. Todd Reitzler would pick up his third feature of the year in the Junction Sports Bar & Grill I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock feature. Nick Murty and Eric Stanton would share the early lead before Reitzler took the lead on lap seven, a lead he would not give up scoring his win. Following Reitzler over the finish line would be Stanton, Dylan Book and Eric Knutson. Adam Larson would score his fifth win of the year in the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel I.M.C.A. Modified feature. Larson would battle Scott Hogan up to lap fifteen, when Larson would make a low side pass off turn four to take the lead. Larson started in the tenth starting position and carefully worked his way to the front. Only one yellow flag would slow the twenty-lap event on lap twelve. Jon Snyder would start eleventh and finish second, giving him the point lead going into next Friday night. With Larson’s win and then point leader Jimmy Gustin’s ninth place finish, the top three in point are only separated by a total of six points. Behind Larson and Snyder were Jay Schmidt and Hogan. Scott Davis would be another driver who had a memorable night in the Big 8 Tyre Center I.M.C.A. Sport Mods. Davis last tasted victory on lap five, and now five nights later would again go to victory lane by scoring the victory in the feature event. Then he would come out in the special “Gambler” race and win that. Davis would score his victories over Paul Nagle in both events. Brad Iverson and point leader Kevin Sather would round out the top four in the feature event. Next Friday night will be Hogeland Auto Plaza “Kids Night” at the speedway with a special surprise which Lonnie Hogeland say’s that you better bring your camera with you next Friday night. The gates will open at 5:30, hot laps will begin at 7:00 and the first race of the night will begin at 7:30.
