Many Surprises This Week at the Marshalltown Speedway!
By Denny Grabenbauer

MARSHALLTOWN, IA (July 24) - Friday night, week eleven, would start out like many race night this season, perfect weather not a cloud in the sky a pit area full of local cars and out of state drivers. And like many nights, a perfect night would turn into a what happen type of night. Promoter Toby Kruse was quick to say, “Now I’ve seen it all. We started the night without a cloud in the sky, and 45-minutes into the night, it would cloud up and rain.” To most promoters this would bring an end to the night. “I figured we just took a two-hour and five minute rain delay working on getting the track back into shape. The drivers and fans were willing to wait it out, so it was our job to get things going again. It’s like going to a baseball game and have a delay. You resume racing right were you left off, so that’s what we did, it worked out OK and everyone understood and was happy with the out come.”

The out come of the night would see new faces visit victory lane for the first time. A fourteen year old would find his self in victory lane, one driver would win for the first time this season and a pair of brothers would steal the show finishing first and second. Changes would also take place in two of the five classes for the points lead.

Many surprises would take place but the one that had everyone talking about was the winner in the Big 8 Tyre Center I.M.C.A. Sport Mod feature. It would be a 14-year old driver that would out distance a National Champion and track champion to score his first career win at the famed quarter-mile speedway. Rookie driver Jake Strayer who seems to improve every week finally had his dream come true. “This is what I’ve been working toward and just can’t say thanks to enough people for standing behind me and giving me this type of opportunity, this is just great.” Kyle Brown would lead the first seven laps before Strayer would make his move to the front. Strayer would hit his mark through out the fifteen-lap event. With two laps to go point leader Kevin Sather and Luke Wanninger would put the pressure on Strayer, but nothing was going to deny him of this win. Finishing forth was Scott Davis who was involved in a early race incident which sent him to the tail of the twenty-four car field.

Not since August 15th of 2008 had Jeff Wollam visited victory lane in the Aaron’s I.M.C.A. Stock Car feature but almost a year later, that all changed. Consistent finishes have kept Wollam in the top five in the point standings but a win had eluded him up to now. Friday night Wollam would start in the tenth starting position and driver to the front to take the lead from Clay Deppe on lap eight. The only thing that would slow him down on this night was a yellow flag on lap eleven. Wollam would feel the pressure of Michael Jeannette and Dustin Smith right to the end, as he would score his first win of the season. Deppe would finish forth.

It would be the Gustin brother’s who would steal the show in the Meswaki Bingo Casino I.M.C.A. Modified feature. Denny Rosenberg would lead the opening lap of the twenty-lap event before Kyle Krampe would take his turn and lead the next five circuits. “Show-Down” winner Jacob Murray would then take his turn running up front for the next twelve laps before Richie Gustin would move to the top spot. Gustin would use a very unique line on the racetrack putting him out front. With four laps remaining, brother Jimmy would now put the pressure on the top spot, but on this night Richie would keep the lead and go on to pick up the victory. Jimmy would finish second and would take back the point lead going into next week, week twelve. Scott Hogan and Murray would round out the top four.

Joel Huggins one week earlier would win his first feature in three years in the Mod-Lite Dwarf Cars. One week later, Huggins would win his second feature of his career. Huggins would lead the first three laps before giving way to Randy Bryan. On a restart on lap six, Huggins would take the lead back, one he would not give up. He would go on to score his second win in as many weeks. Andy Hennigar would finish second followed by Bryan and point leader Mike Morrill.

Todd Reitzler would end the night by winning his third feature of the year in the Junction Sports Bar & Grill I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock feature. Dylan Book would lead the first three laps, before Reitzler who started tenth, would take the lead. Devin Smith would finish second and take over the point lead. Eric Knutson and Dustin Elliott would round out the top four.

Next Friday night will be Hy-Vee Night at the Speedway, where a full night of racing action will take to the track. The “Faster Pastor” race will get the night off and running and to end the night will be the second annual “Gambler” winner take all for the Modifieds. The racing action will all get started around 7:15 following hot laps.
