Faster Pastor, Gambler, featured at the Marshalltown Speedway!
By Denny Grabenbauer

MARSHALLTOWN, IA (July 31) - Race fans were treated on Friday night to two special events. The first was when area pastors would complete in the annual “faster pastor” race to start the night, and then the much-anticipated “Gambler” event would end the nights racing action.

Area pastors would go head to head with their congregations cheering them on with the winner of the event leading the crowd in the opening invocation. When the checkered flag fell, Redeemer Lutheran pastor Dan Johnson would out distance Kerry Jech to be named the “faster pastor” in 2009. “This was fun and really exciting we have to thank your local car owners to allow us to compete in their cars, I’m just glad that could bring the Dustin Elliott car to victory lane”, said Johnson in victory lane.

Then for the final event of the night, it would be Nate Caruth, a 16-year old driver from Ames that would win $1000 in the winner take all “Gambler” event. “Last year I finished second in this race and believe it or not, but I have been thinking about this all year long, I’m just thankful that I was able to compete in this again this year and I can’t be happier in the out come.” Caruth would have the field covered by the forth lap and would go on to win one of the “crown jewel” events at the speedway.

In regular racing action first time winners again would make an appearance in victory lane as once again the fast track would prove again to be near perfect for good close side-by-side racing. Tim Hennigar, Tim Murty, Terry Shaffar and Luke Wanninger would all ad their names to victory lane by scoring their first wins of the season.

Tim Hennigar would last visit victory lane on August 15th, 2008. With many times this year he would have the car to beat, but lady luck would snatch a victory from him but on this night it would all come together and it would be good enough to score his first win of the year. The lead would change hands three times before Hennigar would take the lead from last weeks winner Joel Huggins on lap seven. He would maintain the top position working his way to victory in the Mod Lite Dwarf Car division. Finishing second would be Mike Kennedy followed by point leader Mike Morrill and Huggins.

Luke Wanninger would be the second driver to visit victory lane and his first since August 20th, 2008, in the Big 8 Tyre Auto Center I.M.C.A. Sport Mod feature. Wanninger, who is not a weekly competitor in 2009 would start ninth and take the lead on lap nine. Duane VanDeest would lead the opening eight laps before Wanninger would make his low side pass for the lead. Wanninger would out distance Scott Davis, last weeks winner Jake Strayer and Brad Iverson for the win.

Tim Murty would be the next driver to score a victory in the Meswaki Bingo Casino I.M.C.A. Modified class. Murty’s last visit to victory lane was June 16th, 2006. Murty would start outside the front row and hold off many early challenges by Ronn Lauritzen, but Murty would not be rattled on this night. Three yellow flags would be the only thing that would slow Murty on his way to victory lane. Behind Murty was Ryan Gustin, Scott Hogan and point leader Jimmy Gustin.

Terry Shaffar would have over five year between his last victory because it was in 2004 when Shaffar would last visit victory lane in the Junction Sports Bar and Grill I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock class. Shaffar would star ninth and would take the lead from Josh Saunders on lap four then would have to battle with Todd Reitzler right to the checkered flag in scoring the victory. Behind Shaffar and Reitzler was point leader Devin Smith and Eric Knutson.

Dustin Smith would continue his winning ways, as he would pick up his seventh win of the year in the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car division. Eric Flander would lead the opening two laps before Michael Jeannette took his turn up front for the next two laps before Smith who started tenth and took the lead. Lap traffic would be the only concern for Smith on his way to victory. Damon Murty, last weeks winner Jeff Wollam and Trent Murphy would follow Smith across the finish line.

The season will march on next Friday night, and next week the Americas Best Value Inn King of the Hill event for the Stock Cars will be featured. The gates will open at 5:30 with hot laps at 7:00 with races to follow at 7:30.
