Week number thirteen at the Marshalltown Speedway

By Denny Grabenbauer

MARSHALLTOWN, IA (August, 7) - As the racing season marches on, one thing that has been consistent almost each and every week has been the weather and finding new drivers visiting victory lane for the first time. And again on week number thirteen at the Marshalltown Speedway, it would be no difference. A large amount of rain that fell in the area early Friday morning would make the track very unique, then before the night would come to an end, more rain would begin to fall before the final checkered flag. Also, three classes out of five would see first time winners that would come from the Modified, Sport Mod and Hobby Stock classes.

Promoter Toby Kruse would have his hands full just trying to recover from the early rain of the day. “The track was spongy, soft and hard to keep smooth but our crew kept trying to make it the best track in each race we ran, but it was a challenge in staying ahead of the program.” Almost after each race, time would have to be taken to roll out the ruts, keeping the track wide and race able. “Then when it started sprinkling with two features to go, I just couldn’t believe it, but we made it and we go the show in.”

Scott Simatovich, Bryan Rodman and Eric Larson would all ad their names to the growing list of first time winners on the year, two being in there rookie seasons.

Simatovich who has progressed first through the Hobby Stock and now has found a permanent home in the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel I.M.C.A. division has been close but was never able to put all together, that was until Friday night. The lead would pass through Tim Stevens, David Brown and Tim Murty before Simatovich would take the lead on lap nine, just as the sprinkles started to fall. The race would progress on and Simatovich would have to deal with Brett Ladehoff and Tim Murty until the final lap as he would go on and score the victory. “We have been waiting and waiting and we kept waiting knowing we would someday get one, I just stay patient and it finally tonight it paid off.” Behind Simatovich at the end would be Murty, Ladehoff and Scott Hogan.

Bryan Rodman would be one of the two rookie drivers who picked up his first career victory in the Big 8 Tyre Center I.M.C.A. Sport Mod feature. Rodman who has raced golf carts in the past, decided to leave his golf cart in the garage and race a Sport Mod. “We race a couple times a week and we really are only able to come here when it works out, we love it here and would like to race here more. I have to thank my wife in encouraging me to do this, I owe this win to her.” Rodman would lead from start to finish and the only thing that would slow him would be yellow flags and a red flag for Curt Hilmer who rolled and was uninjured on lap nine. Finishing behind Rodman was Kyle Brown, Neil Follett and Scott Davis.

Eric Larson, the second rookie of the night to go to victory, as he would take the lead with two laps to go in the Junction Sports Bar & Grill I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock feature. Larson a former Cruiser and Figure 8 drivers out distanced the field to pick up his first career victory. Behind Larson would be Jennifer Hulin, Michael Vibbard and Michael Murphy.

Dustin Smith would win his eighth feature of the year in the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car feature, as he outdistanced Damon Murty, Michael Jeannette and Rob Schneider.

Joel Huggins would win his third feature of the year in the Mod-Lite Dwarf Cars. Huggins, who picked up his first win just four weeks ago, has been on a hot streak these past five weeks. Finishing second was Josh May, who turned in his best performance of the year followed by point leader Mike Morrill and Tim Hennigar.

Next Friday night will be the annual Cardboard Classic night. Fans in the stands will bring cardboard racecars of the favorite drivers who will race them down the front straight a way. The gates will open at 5:30 with hot laps starting at 7:00 and the first race of the night will begin at 7:30.
