Cardboard Classic at Marshalltown
by: Denny Grabenbauer
MARSHALLTOWN, IA (August 14) - Friday night race fans were treated to a near
perfect night as the speedway prepares for three nights of racing in the
next eight nights. Friday night would be a great way to start as horsepower
turned in to the pounding of shoes hitting the raceway during the annual
“New Hope Cardboard Classic”, when race fans make cardboard look-a-like cars
of their favorite drivers. “This is always one of my favorite promotions,”
said promoter Toby Kruse. “It really brings the fans closer to the drivers
and it is just a lot of fun for everyone.” This year the divisions were
broken into six groups so the young ones had the same chance as the older
ones competing against one another.
When the cardboard cars were removed from the track the motors began to roar
and the feature events would get underway. The heat races were all run
without incident except for one as one of last weeks winners Bryan Rodman,
would go from winner to getting upside down in turn two during his heat race
of the Big 8 Tyre Sport Mod heat number two. He would come back and race his
way through the B-Main to qualify for the feature where he would come back
to finish twelfth.
Scott Simatovich who won his first feature event one week earlier would
again put his Mo-par powered Modified in victory lane in the Meswaki Bingo
Casino Hotel division by again leading from start to finish to score the
victory. This week Simatovich started fifth and took the lead on lap one. He
would have to hold off Jay Schmidt who finished second by working his way
around the lap traffic right to the checkered flag. Adam Larson and Scott
Hogan would round out the top four.
Dustin Smith kept up his winning ways by picking up his ninth weekly feature
of the season in the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car event. Michael Johnston,
Steve Meyer and Michael Jeannette would share the top spot in the early
going until lap ten when the yellow would come out bunching the field closer
together. On the restart Smith would use the high line making the pass for
the lead on lap thirteen then just hold off the field until the end.
Jeannette, Jeff Wollam and Tracy Gienger would follow Smith across the line.
Point leader Devin Smith would lead only the last 30-yards of the Junction
Sports Bar & Grille I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock feature, but it was enough to score
his third win of the year. Pete Hutzel would lead all but the last few yards
in finishing second, his best finish of the year. Terry Shaffar and Michael
Murphy would round out the top four.
Brad Iverson would win his second feature of the year in the Big 8 Tyre
Center I.M.C.A. Sport Mod feature by out distancing Jake Strayer to the
checkered flag. Scott Davis would finish third and take over the point lead.
Zach Rawlins finished forth with his best finish of the season.
Mike Morrill would once again find his way to victory lane as he continues
to build on his season point total in the Mod-Lite Dwarf Car division.
Morrill who was perfect through the first seven weeks of the season had been
winless and finally was able to add another victory to his total. Morrill
would take the lead on lap three and cruise to victory ahead of Andy
Hennigar, Jimmy May and Mike Kennedy.
This coming Wednesday racing will continue as the Miller Lite 50 brings the
Deery Brothers I.M.C.A. Late Models back to the high banked quarter mile
speedway. “This is one of our top shows of the year,” say’s Kruse. “The late
models will be at the State Fair the night before so we can expect many if
not more drivers wanting to race with us the next night.” Also joining the
evening will be the Karl’s Chevrolet Dirt Trucks, Mod-Lite Dwarf Cars and
the Big 8 Tyre Center Sport Mods. Wednesday night the gates will open at
5:00 with hot-laps at 6:15 and racing to begin at 7:00.
Then on Friday night it will be Nostalgic Night at the Speedway with cars of
yesterday racing. The gates will open at 5:30 with hot laps at 7:00 and
racing to begin at 7:30.
