Tune UP Time at Marshalltown
by: Denny Grabenbauer
MARSHALLTOWN, IA (August 21) - Friday night’s week fifteen turned into a
tune-up for the September’s third annual “Havoc on the High Banks” as
drivers in the Modified division was racing for extra cash and a five-foot
trophy during the “Custom Concrete” twenty-lap main event. “This was just
the first of many tune-up nights as drivers start to get geared up for
September’s event,” said promoter Toby Kruse. “We are already starting to
get entry’s from all parts of the country plus I’ve received three entries
today from drivers in Canada who are planning on making the trip here to
Marshalltown.”
With the weather of the day in question the track would be near perfect as
drivers from today and yesterday tackled the high bank quarter mile raceway.
“We had things ready for Wednesday, but rain cancelled that one on us, then
Thursday night rain chased us off the track again so today we just used what
rain we got in preparing the track, and I think it turned out pretty good,”
said Kruse.
Brett Ladehoff was one driver who was very thrilled with the way the track
turned out as he would lead the entire twenty-laps of the Meswaki Bingo
Casino Hotel I.M.C.A. Modified feature as he score his first win of the
season. “This was only the third time I’ve been in this new Dirt Works
Chassis and it was just perfect for me tonight,” commented Ladehoff in
victory lane. “We’ve had somewhat of a tough year so hopefully this momentum
will carry us right through until the Havoc.” Ladehoff would work his way
through lap traffic and a couple of yellows to pick up the victory ahead of
Jimmy Gustin, Adam Larson and Jay Schmidt.
Another first time winner would emerge to the top of the Aarons I.M.C.A.
Stock Car feature as Rob Schneider would take the lead on lap four and lead
the rest of the way to score his first career win. “This has been coming for
a long time, but I just never thought it would ever happen, and tonight I
didn’t try to over driver the car I just went where I had to and I’m
standing here in victory lane,” said Schneider. Jeff Wollam would challenge
during the eighteen-lap feature and would finish second followed by Dusty
Vis and Aaron Haggerty. Haggerty was involved in a lap three incident and
had to restart in the final starting position.
Kevin Sather would find his way back into victory lane in the Big 8 Tyre
Center I.M.C.A. Sport Mod feature by taking the lead from Kyle Brown with
three laps to go in picking up his win. The lead would change hands numerous
times before Sather would take it for good. Behind Sather and Brown was
point leader Scott Davis in third and last weeks winner Brad Iverson
finishing forth.
Michael Murphy last visited victory lane on lap nine but on week fifteen his
luck changed and for the second time this year would go to victory in the
Junction Sports Bar & Grill I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock feature. Only a red flag on
lap three, when John Schuring rolled his car in turn one would slow the
event and Murphy. Terry Shaffar would finish a close second followed by Todd
Reitzler and Clint Nelson who led the first eight laps.
Joel Huggins made a clean sweep of the Mod-Lite Dwarf Cars as he captured
victories in his heat race and feature event. Until 2009 Huggins was winless
in feature events and now he has earned the top spot four times already this
season. Finishing a close second was Tim Hennigar who started in the last
starting position. Randy Bryan and Josh May rounded out the top four.
Next Friday night will mark the next to last point night of the season with
the season championships coming up on Friday September 4th. Vintage Cars
will again be featured during the evenings racing action with some extra
special guests expected to be in attendance. The gate will open at 5:30 with
hot laps at 6:45 and the first event of the night getting underway at 7:30.
