Larry Wollam Season Championship at Marshalltown
By Denny Grabenbauer
MARSHALLTOWN, IA (Sept 4) - Racing continued into the final regular season
night as the third night of racing in the past eight days took place at the
Marshalltown Speedway this past Friday night. The weather would be picture
perfect for the “Larry Wollam” Season Championships. Tuesday night the Deery
Brothers Summer Series was highlighted as the I.M.C.A. Late Models took to
the speedway. At the end of the 50-lap main event it was Ray Guss Jr. from
Milan Illinois who passed Waterloo’s Jeff Aikey with two laps to go to notch
the victory. Scott Davis would win the Sport Mod feature while Tim Hennigar
took the honors in the Mod-Lite Dwarf Cars.
Friday night the pit area would swell with drivers coming as far away as
Farmington New Mexico and Dawson County Nebraska. “This what I.M.C.A. racing
is all about. If you are I.M.C.A. legal you can race at any track in any
part of the country,” commented promoter Toby Kruse. “Regan Tafeya from New
Mexico, drove for 23-hours to get here, and then as luck would have it, he
blew up in hot laps.”
With Tuesday’s night still a fresh memory, drivers would race on Friday for
their finishing positions in the 2009-point race. Out of car introductions
and Australian Pursuit races would thrill the fans plus a little add bonus
if the front row would take the promoter challenge and go to the rear. If
they would give up their spot and start in the rear they would receive extra
bonus money. “I added the Australian Pursuit events just to give the fans
something extra. I think everyone enjoyed them, and we maybe should do more
of them next year,” said Kruse.
Only one driver would put his championship on the line and that would be
Jimmy Gustin in the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel I.M.C.A. Modified class.
Gustin would start fifteenth and work his way to third and still maintain
the top point spot to earn his third track championship in as many years.
“It’s about the sponsors and crew that have supported me,” said Gustin in
victory lane. Adam Larson would follow leader Jon Snyder for the first
twenty circuits before taking the lead, a lead he would not give up.
Finishing forth would be Scott Simatovich.
Scott Davis would make it a perfect week in the Big 8 Tyre Center I.M.C.A.
Sport Mod feature by leading the entire twenty-lap feature event. Three
yellow flags through out would slow the event but not Davis as he held off
Kevin Sather for his forth feature of the year. Sather would go on to
capture the track championship by three points over Davis. Behind Davis and
Sather was Jake Strayer and Kyle Brown.
The Smith brothers Dustin and Devin would not only with championship
features but they also would emerge as track champions in their respective
divisions. Devin would win the feature and the championship in the Junction
Sports Bar & Grill I.M.C.A. Hobby Stocks Devin would lead from start to
finish in securing the wins. Dustin would have a battle with Jeff Wollam
right to the checkered flag in the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car main. The two
would exchange the lead numerous times through out the event as the two
would stay side by side or bumper to bumper the entire twenty-three-lap
event. Lap traffic would become an obstacle for the two, but at the end
Smith would have the advantage.
Mike Morrill would start up front and finish up front to win the race and
his second championship in as many years in the Mod-Lite Dwarf Cars. Morrill
would hold off the challenges of Tim Hennigar to the checkered in securing
the win. Finishing third was Mike Kennedy with Andy Hennigar finishing
forth.
Next Friday night the race track will remain idol as officials prepare for
the third annual Havoc on the High Banks Friday and Saturday September 18th
& 19th.
