MARSHALLTOWN, IA (April 9) - With Mother Nature deciding to have our way with us to open the 2010 season, we had to wait an extra week to get things kicked off for the Ryan Ashton Racing season opener at the Marshalltown Speedway. 139 cars rolled through the gates and the stands were packed! Just as we were getting the heat races started a fuse in the transformer blew which caused the lights to go off on the backstretch and the PA to go out. Promoter Toby Kruse tracked down portable lights and got them to the track and as crews were getting the lights set up, Alliant Energy and K&L Electric were able to get the transformer fixed after a 90 minute break! The Modlites kicked off the racing program with 2 heat races and 18 cars. Tim Hennigar and Mike Morrill started off their 2010 Marshalltown Speedway campaigns respectively by winning their heat races. The feature proved to be “on the edge of you seat” exciting! Kevin Grisham started from the pole and rolled in turn one collecting Cory Sonner. Grisham was okay and walked away from the wreck. Tim Hennigar proceeded to take command of the race and le the first 8 laps. Josh May took the lead for a few laps on the high side. May and Hennigar swapped the lead for a few laps and then Morrill took the lead on laps 13 and 14. Morrill lead down the backstretch with May right on the back bumper. In turns 3 and 4 May went high and Morrill down low and May got the good run off the top for the last corner pass and the win by a few feet! Morrill finished 2nd, Eric Hendrickson 3rd and Jimmy May rounded out the top 4. In the Sport Mods, 41 cars joined us and we had 4 action packed heats and a couple of B-Mains to fill our 24 car starting field. Bill Hildreth, Eric Flander, Neil Follett and Eric Elliott all picked up heat race wins. Geoff Olson started 2nd in the A-Main and never looked back from there. Eric Elliott ran 2nd and gave Olson plenty of heat throughout the 15 lap main event. There was lots of 3 wide racing for the 3rd spot all race as Eric Flander came away with 3rd and Brad Iverson rounded out the top 4. The stock cars fielded 22 cars on the evening and 3 very exciting heat races. Damon Murty, Steve Meyer and Trent Murphy all picked up heat race wins. The A-Main proved to be a great one as it always is with the Stock Cars. Former track champion Tracy Gienger paced the field for the first 4 laps. Michael Jeanette and Murty were right on Gienger’s tail for the first 4 laps and they went 3 wide for the lead in turns 3 and 4 with Murty taking the lead on the high side. Damon led the rest of the way to pick up the win. Dustin Smith had an excellent run as he started last and finished in 2nd. Steve Meyer ended up with a solid 3rd place finish and Michael Jeanette charged from the tail of the field to a 4th place finish, as he brought out a yellow flag on lap 9. The modifieds put on another great show for the fans as drivers were found running all lines on the race track. 27 cars joined us and Luke Wanninger, Vern Jackson and Richie Gustin all started off the night with wins in their heat races. In the feature Luke Wanninger set the pace for the first 13 laps as Richie Gustin charged his way to the front. On lap 13 when Wanninger and Gustin were working through lapped traffic they collided off of turn 4 and ended each other’s nights. Scott Simatovich inherited the lead and set the tone for the rest of the 20 lap event. Jay Schmidt got sideways in turn 2 on lap 17 bringing out a yellow and collecting Kyle Krampe. Simatovich picked up the win with Jon Snyder taking 2nd, Vern Jackson 3rd and 3 time and defending track champion Jimmy Gustin 4th. The Hobby Stocks finished off our evening as 31 hobbies joined us for the night. Michael Murphy, Todd Reitzler, Dustin Elliott and Eric Knutson all picked in wins in the 4 heat races. Josh Irvine picked up the win as he led the first 3 laps and then swapped the lead with Nick Murty off and on for the next 3 laps. Murty was leading while under caution and had to pull pit side on the lap 6 caution for Russell Keefer. Reitzler then battled hard with Irvine but Josh held him off. Reitzler picked up a 2nd place finish, Murphy came home in 3rd and Dustin Smith finished 4th! Results: MODLITES: Heat 1-Tim Hennigar Heat 2- Mike Morrill Feature: 1. Josh May 2. Mike Morrill 3.
