Shryock Conquers Iowa-Missouri Battle at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway
by Brian Neal

Memphis, MO (May 6, 2006) - Kelly Shryock conquered his second O'Reilly USMTS feature win in as many nights Saturday at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway, to sweep the Iowa-Missouri border war. Zack VanderBeek (USRA Stock Cars), Tony Dunker (Toni Dunker Farm Marketing USRA B-Modifieds), Mike Shelton (USRA Hobby Stocks), Beau Taylor (Outlaw Hobby Stocks) and Andrew Hustead (Hornets) each took home feature wins in their respective classes.

Mike Shelton and Jason VanZomeren drew the front row for the 15 lap USRA Hobby Stock feature, with Shelton jumping out front on lap 1. Shelton would go on to lead all 15 laps and held off a last lap charge from Steve Allen to claim his first win of 2006 at Memphis. Ben Jones was third, Bill Gibson was fourth, with Nathan Wood coming home in fifth. Jones took home the heat race win.

Up next was the 15 lap Outlaw Hobby Stock feature, with Michael St. Clair and Bobby McCartney leading the field to the green. St. Clair would grab the top spot on the start and then held it until lap 5, when Rodger Dresden slipped under him for the lead. Dresden held the lead for only two laps, as Beau Taylor jumped to his outside to take over the top spot on lap 7. But Dresden didn't give up easily, as he and Taylor ran the next five laps side by side. Taylor would hold off Dresden over the next three laps to take home an emotional win. Beau would honor his fallen brother Bleau Taylor in victory lane, as it has been close to a month since he was taken by a massive heart attack during practice day at Memphis. Adam Birck was third, Jeff Soper came from tenth to finish in fourth, with Jim Lynch rounding out the top five. Heat race wins went to Lynch and Soper.

The 8 lap Hornet feature was the next to take to the speedway, with Cody Martin and Andrew Hustead on the front row. Hustead moved out front on the drop of the green flag and then held off Tom Irwin to claim his first win of the season at the speedway. Brent Hartley was third, Jayson Barnes was fourth, with J.D. Murphy coming home in fifth. Hartley took the checkers first in the heat race.

Matt Greiner and Jeremy Hamlin took the field to the drop of the green flag in the 15 lap USRA Stock Car feature, with Greiner moving out front on lap 1. Greiner would hold the top spot until lap 10, when Zack VanderBeek, who started eighth, slipped under him for the lead. VanderBeek would pull away over the final five laps to pick up his second win in a row at Memphis. Greiner, Chris Wibbell and Jason Cook had a great three wide battle for second, with Greiner coming out on top of that battle. Wibbell held on for third, Cook was fourth, with Hamlin rounding out the top five. Heat race wins went to VanderBeek and Greiner.

Up next was the 15 lap Toni Dunker Farm Marketing USRA B-Modified feature. Joe Hooper and Jack Evans Jr drew the front row, with Hooper taking advantage of his start to grab the lead on lap 1. Hooper would hold the top spot until lap 5, when Chris Leathers jumped to his outside to take over the lead. Leathers only led for one lap, as Tony Dunker, who started eighth, slipped under him for the top spot. But Leathers wouldn't give up easy, as he and Dunker ran the next four laps side by side. Dunker held off Leathers on the final five laps to pick up his second win in a row at Memphis. Hooper held on for third, Jeff Waterman was fourth, with Jerry Shoemaker coming from tenth to round out the top five. Waterman and Leathers each took home a heat race win.

The final feature of the evening was the 35 lap O'Reilly USMTS Bentz GM Country Modifieds. Forty-eight Modifieds signed in, with hopes of making the 25 car feature paying $2,000 to win. After five heat races and two semis, the field was set to take the green flag. Jon Tesch and Mark Noble pulled out the number one and two pills to start the feature on the front row. Noble moved out front on the drop of the green flag, with Tesch, Dustin Boney and Tommy Myer battling for second. Noble had built up a straight away lead, when the first caution of the night came out on lap 4.

On the restart, Mike Steensma and another car made contact coming down the front straight. Sending Steensma flipping over the turn two fence. Steensma walked away unhurt, but the car was done for the night.

Noble would once again jump into the lead, but now had Kelly Shryock battling him for the top spot. Shryock would jump to the outside of Noble on lap 17 to take over the lead. A caution on lap 21, brought the field back to the back bumper of Kelly. But Shryock would once again pull to a lead in which he held for the final 14 laps, to pick up his second O'Reilly USMTS feature win in as many nights. Tesch battled back to finish in second, Myer was third, Noble held on for fourth, with Brandon Morton coming home in fifth.

Coming up next week at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway will be the return of the Late Models. The winner of the Late Model feature will take home a top prize of $1,000. Also in action will be the Bentz GM Country USRA Modifieds, USRA Stock Cars, Toni Dunker Farm Marketing USRA B-Modifieds and USRA Hobby Stocks battling it out for USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series national and track points. Plus the Outlaw Hobby Stocks and Hornets will also be in action. Gates will open at 5:00pm, hot laps at 6:30 and racing to follow.
