Fraise, Wood and Dresden Pull Off Exciting Wins at the Pepsi
Scotland County Speedway
by Brian Neal
MEMPHIS, Mo. (May 20, 2006) - Ruth Enterprise and Farm Bureau Insurance Night
provided the fans with some of the best racing action so far this season at the
Pepsi Scotland County Speedway. As three out of the six feature events came down
to the wire before a winner was determined. Taking home the hardware was Tony
Fraise (Bentz GM Country USRA Modifieds), Matt Greiner (USRA Stock Cars), Jack
Evans Jr. (Toni Dunker Advance Trading USRA B-Modifieds), Nathan Wood (USRA
Hobby Stocks), Rodger Dresden (Outlaw Hobby Stocks) and Andrew Hustead
(Hornets).
The Toni Dunker Advance Trading USRA B-Modified 15 lap feature was the first to
take to the track, with Amos Zimmerman and Jerry Poor leading the field to the
green flag. But it was third place starter, Jack Evans Jr. who grabbed the lead
on lap 1. Evans Jr. would go on to lead all 15 laps and held off a final charge
from Tony Dunker, who started tenth, to claim his first win of 2006 at Memphis.
Chris Leathers came home in third, Ron York was fourth, with Poor coming back to
finish fifth. Hooper and Dunker each picked up a heat race win.
Troy Alexander and Jeremy Hamlin drew the front row for the 18 lap USRA Stock
Car feature, but it was fourth place starter Matt Greiner who jumped out front
on lap 1. Grenier would go on to lead all 18 laps and pick up his first win of
2006 at the speedway. Hamlin held on for second, Jason Cook came from eighth to
finish third, Colt Mather started tenth and finished in fourth, with Michael
Browning rounding out the top 5. Heat race winners were Troy Alexander and
Hamlin.
Up next was the 12 lap USRA Hobby Stock feature, with Steve Allen and Mike
Shelton starting on the front row. Shelton took advantage of his starting spot
to move out front on lap 1. Shelton continued to lead, as Nathan Wood moved up
to challenge for the top spot. Wood would try to get under Shelton with two laps
to go, but Shelton cam back on the high side to stay in the lead. Wood, who was
on the bottom of the speedway, and Shelton, who was up top, ran the final lap
side-by-side. Coming off of four for the checkered flag, Wood would out distance
Shelton by less then a bumper to take a clean sweep for his week of racing, as
he won at Oskaloosa on Wednesday and Friday at Bloomfield. Bill Gibson was
third, Allen held on for fourth, with Rick Sands coming home in fifth. Gibson
would take home the heat race win.
The Outlaw Hobby Stock 15 lap feature turned out to be another close battle to
the checkered flag, with Rodger Dresden holding off Beau Taylor at the line for
the win. Brian Clark and Dresden drew the front row for the feature, with
Dresden grabbing the top spot on the drop of the green flag. Dresden held the
lead until lap 8, when Taylor, who started seventh, slipped under him for the
lead. Dresden wouldn't give up easy, as he came back the next lap to take the
lead back from Taylor. Dresden and Taylor would run the final five laps
side-by-side without making any contact. On the final lap coming out of four,
Dresden would take a slight advantage to hold off Taylor for his first win of
2006 at Memphis. Brian Howerton came from ninth to finish in third, Clark held
on for fourth, with Ryan Crandall rounding out the top five. Clark and Taylor
would each take home a heat race win.
J.D. Murphy and Cody Martin led the field to the drop of the green flag in the 8
lap Hornet feature, with Martin moving out front on lap 1. Martin would only
hold the top spot for one lap, as Andrew Hustead slipped by on the outside to
grab the lead on lap 2. Hustead then pulled away for the final six laps to pick
up his second win of the season at the speedway. Martin held on for second,
Murphy was third, Bill Young was fourth, with Brian Lemen coming home in fifth.
The heat race was also won by Hustead.
The final feature of the evening was the 20 lap Bentz GM Country USRA Modifieds,
and what a finish it was. Ryan Meyer and Mark Burgtorf drew the front row for
the feature, with Burgtorf grabbing the lead on lap 1. Burgtorf would continue
to hold the top spot, as Micheal Long, who started twelfth, and Tony Fraise, who
started tenth, were working their way towards the front. Long would take
advantage of a caution on lap 11, as he jumped to the outside of Burgtorf on the
restart to grab the lead on lap 12. But Fraise would slip under Long on lap 13
to take over the top spot. Long wouldn't give up, as he worked the top side of
the speedway to get back by Fraise on lap 18. Long, who ran the top of the
speedway, and Fraise, who was on the bottom, would run the final two laps
side-by-side. Fraise would take the advantage coming off of turn four on the
final lap to edge Long out at the line for his fourth win of the season at the
speedway. Martin Bennett came from ninth to finish in third, Burgtorf held on
for fourth, with Mike Bennett rounding out the top five. Meyer and Burgtorf each
picked up a heat race win.
Coming up next week at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway, will be Scotland
County Lanes and Memphis Democrat Night. The battle for the USRA Casey's General
Stores Weekly Racing Series national and track points continue in the Bentz GM
Country USRA Modifieds, USRA Stock Cars, Toni Dunker Advance Trading USRA
B-Modifieds and USRA Hobby Stocks, with the Outlaw Hobby Stocks and Hornets also
battling for track points. The pit gates will open at 4:30 p.m., grandstands at
5, hot laps at 6:30 and racing to follow.
