Meyer, Browning and Hayes Claim First Checkers of the Season at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway
by Brian Neal

MEMPHIS, MO (June 17, 2006) - The Pepsi Scotland County Speedway once again provided the fans with some great side-by-side racing action, as three drivers earned their first feature wins of the season at the speedway. Ryan Meyer (Bentz GM Country USRA Modifieds), Michael Browning (USRA Stock Cars) and Jimmy Hayes (USRA Hobby Stocks) each picked up their first feature wins of the season at Memphis, while Jack Evans Jr. (Toni Dunker Advance Trading B-Modifieds), Beau Taylor (Outlaw Hobby Stocks) and Brent Hartley (Hornets) were repeat winners.

The first feature of the evening was the 15 lap Toni Dunker Advance Trading B-Modifieds, with Jim Gillenwater and Josh Larson drawing the front row. On the drop of the green flag, it was third place starter Jack Evans Jr. jumping out into the lead. Evans Jr. would hold off several challenges from Gillenwater to lead all 15 laps and claim his second win of 2006 at the speedway. Ron York came from ninth to finish in third, Toni Dunker started tenth and finished fourth, with Jerry Poor rounding out the top five. Heat race winners were Dunker and Gillenwater.

Josh Soper and Jimmy Hooper led the field to the drop of the green flag in the 15 lap Outlaw Hobby Stock feature, but it was fifth place starter Brad Weber moving up to grab the top spot on lap 1. Weber would only hold the lead for one lap, as Beau Taylor slipped under him to grab the top spot on lap 2. Taylor then held onto the top spot until lap 5, when Rodger Dresden got under him to take over the lead. Dresden and Taylor would run the next four laps side-by-side, before Taylor got the advantage out front. Taylor then held on for his third win of the season at the speedway. Josh Soper crossed the line in second, followed by his father Jeff Soper in third, Dresden lost a drive shaft in turn three and still finished fourth, with Adam Birck coming home in fifth. Josh Soper and Jeff Soper picked up the heat race wins.

Brent Hartley grabbed the lead on lap 1 of the 5 lap Hornet feature and never looked back, as he claimed his third win in a row at Memphis. Andrew Hustead came home in second, Matt Moore was third, J.D. Murphy was fourth, with Brian Lemen rounding out the field. Heat race win went to Hustead.

The 15 lap USRA Hobby Stock feature was up next, with Derek Kirkland and Cory Brown leading the field to the drop of the green flag. But it was fifth place starter Nathan Wood taking the lead on lap 1, with Jimmy Hayes and Mike Shelton battling close behind for second. Wood would hold the top spot until lap 4, when Hayes slipped under him for the lead. Hayes then held off several challenges from Shelton over the final eleven laps to claim his first win of the season at the speedway. Wood held on for third, Bill Gibson was fourth, with Mark Moore coming home in fifth. Wood and Gibson each picked up a heat race win.

Dennis Elliott and Aaron Poe drew the front row for the 20 lap Bentz GM Country USRA Modified feature, with Elliott edging out Ryan Meyer at the line to lead lap 1. Meyer was able to work under Elliott on lap two, to take over the top spot. Meyer then fought off Tony Fraise over the final laps to pick up his first win of 2006 at the speedway. Mike Bennett came from eleventh to finish in third, Elliott held on for fourth, with David Wietholder rounding out the top five. Heat race wins went to Elliott, Fraise and Mark Burgtorf.

The final feature of the evening was the 18 lap USRA Stock Cars, with Bert McDaniel and Michael Browning leading the field to the drop of the green. Browning took advantage of his front row starting spot to move out front on lap 1. Browning would hold off several challenges from McDaniel over the 18 lap event to claim his first Stock Car feature win at Memphis for 2006. Jason Cook came home in third, Ryan Cook was fourth, with Jeremy Hamlin coming home in fifth. Shane Weller, Browning and McDaniel each took the checkers in the heat races.
