Greiner and Wood Take Top Honors With Shootout Wins at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway
by Brian Neal

MEMPHIS, MO (July 1, 2006) - The fourth leg of the USRA Casey's General Stores Shootout was held at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway on Saturday, with J's Foods sponsoring the big event. Matt Greiner took home the big prize in the USRA Stock Car feature, while Nathan Wood claimed victory in the USRA Hobby Stock main event. Also taking home feature wins on the evening were Martin Bennett (Bentz GM Country USRA Modifieds), Jim Gillenwater (Toni Dunker Advance Trading USRA B-Modifieds), Beau Taylor (Outlaw Hobby Stocks) and Brent Hartley (Hornets).

Starting the evening off first was the 15 lap Toni Dunker Advance Trading USRA B-Modified feature, with Jim Gillenwater and Jeff Waterman on the front row for the event. Gillenwater would take advantage of his front row start to grab the lead on lap 1, with Waterman and Tony Dunker battling for second. Gillenwater held the lead, with Dunker and Wyatt Lantz, who started seventh, closing in to challenge him. Gillenwater, Dunker and Lantz came up on lap traffic with two laps to go, making it a three way battle for the top spot. Gillenwater would maneuver thru the lapped traffic and held on for his first win of 2006 at the speedway. Dunker held off Lantz for second, with Waterman coming home in fourth, and Jack Evans Jr. coming from tenth to round out the top five. Heat race winners were Dunker and Evans Jr.

Up next was the 8 lap Hornet feature. J.D. Murphy and Andrew Hustead took the field to the drop of the green flag, with Hustead jumping out into the lead on lap 1. Hustead would hold the top spot until lap 5, when he drifted high in turn four, allowing Brent Hartley, who started sixth, to slip under for the lead. Hartley then held off Hustead over the final three laps to claim his fourth win in a row at Memphis. Murphy held on for third, Jim Hamilton was fourth, with Bill Young coming home in fifth. Hartley also claimed the win in the heat race.

Adam Birck and Troy Brierton drew the front row for the 15 lap Outlaw Hobby Stock feature, but it was sixth place started Rodger Dresden coming up to grab the lead on lap 1. Dresden would hold the top spot until disaster struck him going into turn three, as he lost the drive-shaft. Birck would inherit the lead on the restart and then held it until lap 8, when Michael St. Clair, who started eleventh, jumped to his outside for the top spot. St. Clair was looking to be heading for his first career Outlaw Hobby Stock feature win, but Beau Taylor, who started tenth, had different ideas. Taylor would slip under St. Clair going into two on the final lap, as the two went down the backstretch side-by-side. Taylor would take the advantage coming off of four to grab his second win in a row. St. Clair held on for a career best second, Birck was third, Brian Howerton came home fourth, with Brian Clark rounding out the top five. Heat race winners were Howerton, Taylor and Earl Six.

The 18 lap Bentz GM Country USRA Modified feature took to the speedway next, with David Wietholder and Mark Burgtorf making up the front row for the event. Burgtorf took advantage of his front row starting spot to move out front on lap 1. Burgtorf would build up a straight away lead over the field, when the caution waved on lap 16, setting up a green-white-checkered finish. On the restart, Martin Bennett jumped to Burgtorf's outside, as the two raced side-by-side for the final two laps. Burgtorf went into turn three on the final lap to hard and spun, giving Bennett all he needed to go on for his first win of 2006 at the speedway. Mike Bennett, who came from the rear after having a flat before the green was dropped, followed dad home in second, Wietholder held on for third, Jared Durbin recovered from a spin to finish in fourth, with Chris Eggers coming home in fifth. Martin Bennett and Burgtorf claimed wins in the heat races.

Cory Brown and Bill Gibson drew the front row for the 15 lap USRA Hobby Stock Shootout feature, with Brown moving out front on the drop of the green. Brown was looking to being heading for his first career feature win, when disaster struck him on lap 9 with a broken axle. Gibson would inherit the lead on the restart and then held the top spot until lap 11, when Wood slipped under him. Wood, who was running the bottom of the speedway, and Gibson, who was up top, ran the final four laps side-by-side, with Wood slipping ahead at the line to grab the $400 top prize. Shelton and Randy Hadacek had a side-by-side battle for third, with Shelton edging him out at the line for third, with Mark Moore coming home in fifth. Heat race winners were Gibson and Wood.

The final feature of the night was the 25 lap USRA Stock Car Shootout event, with $1,000 waiting for the winner. Troy Alexander and Matt Greiner drew the front row for the main event, but it was fourth place starter Tom Schmitt splitting the two to grab the lead on the drop of the green. Schmitt continued to lead the field and was well on his way to the victory and the $1,000 top prize, but disaster struck him on lap 17 when he got into a lapped car and cut a tire. Greiner inherited the lead on the restart, with T.J. Criss close behind in second. Greiner would hold off a final lap challenge from Criss to claim his second win in a row at the speedway and taking home the $1,000 top prize. Colt Mather came home in third, Schmitt charged back up from his flat to finish in fourth, with Jason Cook coming home in fifth. Schmitt, Mather and Greiner each pick up a heat race win.
