Six Repeat Winners Take Home Checkers at the Pepsi Scotland
County Speedway
by Brian Neal
MEMPHIS, MO (July 8, 2006) - RaceMart Night at the Pepsi Scotland County
Speedway saw six drivers take home repeat wins, while one driver claimed his
first of the season at Memphis. Tommy Elston (Keith's Food Late Models), Tony
Fraise (Bentz GM Country USRA Modifieds), Matt Greiner (USRA Stock Cars), Mike
Shelton (USRA Hobby Stocks), Rodger Dresden (Outlaw Hobby Stocks) and Andrew
Hustead (Hornets) all picked up repeat checkers at the speedway for the 2006
season. While Wyatt Lantz (Toni Dunker Advance Trading USRA B-Modifieds) picked
up his first win of the season at Memphis.
The first feature to take to the speedway was the 15 lap Toni Dunker Advance
Trading USRA B-Modifieds, with Jared Fuller and Jeff Waterman leading the field
to the drop of the green flag. Wyatt Lantz jumped from his third place starting
spot to grab the lead on lap 1, with Waterman close behind in second. Lantz
would pull away from the field and led all 15 laps to claim his first win of
2006 at the speedway. Waterman and Tony Dunker, who started eighth, battled
side-by-side for second, with Waterman edging out Dunker at the finish for
second. Jerry Poor came from ninth to finish in fourth, with Larry Newman coming
home in fifth. Heat race winners were Lantz and Jim Gillenwater.
Up next was the 15 lap Outlaw Hobby Stock feature, with Adam Birck and Jeff
Soper drawing the front row for the event. Soper would take advantage of his
front row start to grab the lead on the drop of the green flag. Soper would hold
the top spot until lap 4, when Rodger Dresden, who started fifth, slipped under
him for the lead. Dresden then held off a late charge from Beau Taylor, who
started tenth, to grab his second win of the season at Memphis. Birck came home
third, Soper held on for fourth, with Michael St. Clair coming from the rear
after being involved in an early spin to finish in fifth. Brian Howerton and Jim
Oliver Jr. each picked up a heat race win.
Matt Greiner and Troy Alexander took the field to the green in the 18 lap USRA
Stock Car feature, with Alexander jumping out front on lap 1. But Alexander's
lead only lasted for one lap, as Greiner slipped by on lap 2 for the top spot.
Greiner then pulled away from the field over the final 16 laps to pick up his
second win in a row and fourth overall at the track. Alexander came home third,
Chris Wibbell came from ninth to finish in third, Jason Cook came from the rear
after being involved in a spin to finish fourth, with Ryan Cook rounding out the
top five. Heat race wins went to Greiner and Alexander.
The USRA Hobby Stock feature turned out to be worth the wait, as three drivers
crossed the line side-by-side for the checkers. Cory Brown and Rick Sands took
the field of sixteen to the drop of the green, with Brown taking the lead on lap
1. Brown would continue to pace the field, as Mike Shelton, who started ninth
and Nathan Wood, who started seventh, were working there way towards the front.
A late race caution erased the lead that Brown had built up, and brought Shelton
and Wood to his back bumper. On the restart, Brown once again grabbed the lead
but now had to fend off Shelton and Wood. Coming off of four to the checkers
Shelton jumped to the outside of Brown, with Wood going inside. The three
drivers raced three wide to the checkers, with Shelton edging out Brown by a
nose for the win. Wood would finish a close third, Bob Lynch came from
fourteenth to finish in fourth, with Bill Gibson coming home in fifth. Wood and
Brown each claimed a win in the heat races.
Bill Young and J.D. Murphy led the field to the green in the 5 lap Hornet
feature, with Murphy taking the lead on lap 1. Murphy would hold on until the
final corner of the final lap, as Andrew Hustead jumped to his outside coming
out of four. The two raced side-by-side to the finish, with Hustead edging out
Murphy at the line for the win. Young and Jim Hamilton rounded out the field.
Hustead also picked up the heat race win.
The 20 lap Bentz GM Country USRA Modified feature saw Dennis Elliott and Tony
Fraise drawing on the front row for the event. Fraise took advantage of his
front row start to grab the lead on the drop of the green flag. Fraise would go
on to lead all twenty laps to pick up his fifth win of 2006 at the speedway.
Mark Burgtorf came from eighth to finish in second, Michael Long was third, Mike
Bennett came home fourth, with Martin Bennett coming from tenth to round out the
top five. Heat race winners were Mike Bennett and Burgtorf.
Jeff Guengerich and Paul Glendenning drew the front row for the 25 lap Keith's
Foods Late Model feature, the final feature of the evening. Guengerich would
grab the lead on the drop of the green flag, with Glendenning close behind in
second. Guengerich would hold the top spot until a restart on lap 10, when Tommy
Elsotn shot by on the top side to take over the lead. Elston would go on to lead
the final 15 laps to claim his third win in four starts at the track. Gary Webb
came from ninth to finish in second, Glendenning held on for third, Justin Reed
was fourth, with Gordy Grubb coming home in fifth. Jody Wood and Webb each
picked up a heat race win.
Coming up next week at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway will be RPM - Off Road
Cooper Tires / Verly Gordy / Pam's Cakes Night. The battle for the Casey's
General Stores Weekly Racing Series track and national points continues in the
Bentz GM Country Modifieds, Stock Cars, Toni Dunker Advance Trading B-Modifieds
