Chateau Raceway
by: Matthew Grage

LANSING, MN (May 16) - Its was a perfect spring day in Southern Minnesota on Friday and it turned into a great night for racing as Chateau Raceway in Lansing "Powered by Miners Outdoor and Recreation" presented week two of the 2008 racing season. It was Hormel Foods Night at the track and the night started out with a special treat for the kids as the drivers pulled out onto the track before the nights racing program and gave the kids rides around the one-third mile oval. Just two nights into the season the track exceeded last season high car count as ninety-eight cars filled the pits for the nights racing action with all classes showing increases in the number of cars from opening night a week earlier.

Leading the way with a twenty-three car field were the "WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds sponsored by Power 96 - The Classic Rock Station". Kenny Wytaske of Lansing picked up where he left off the week before as the opening night feature winner put together a pair exciting wins on the night as he scored the win in his heat as well as his second straight feature win. Wytaske made a nice move on the drop of the green flag as the front row of Bobby Swanson of Kasson and Dan Wheeler of Columbia Heights brought the field a bit high out of turn four to the green. As the field passed the start cone and the green came out Kenny dropped to the bottom of the track from his inside second row starting spot and shot to the front as the field went into turn one. Swanson fell in line second while Wheelr got shuffled back to sixth. Albert Wytaske of Lansing moved up to second. Coming off a restart off a quick lap two caution Swanson tried to get to the inside of Kenny as the field came through turn four to complete lap two, but he got in to hot and clipped Wytaske and turned him around bringing out a second caution and sending him to the back of the field. That moved Albert Wytaske up to second where he proceeded to put the heat on his brother until he finally made the move for the lead on lap eighteen. Albert was bringing the field to the white flag when the leaders hit heavy lapped traffic and big snarl put Kenny back in the lead but another caution put him back behind Albert for a two lap dash to the finish. That bumping and grinding that occurred would come back to haunt Albert as off the restart Kenny was able to get by him to regain the lead as the field came to the white.

Heading down the back straightaway the right front A-Frame and tie rods came loose and Albert was forced to pull to the side and let the field file by. However the tail end of the field as they came into turns one and two had another group of cars tangle and forced a caution-checker finish as everyone had taken the white flag. The final finishing order was set according to the white flag lap putting Albert back into second behind Kenny. Brandon Davis of Medford who also appeared to receive some damage from those final two laps was awarded third with Wheeler fourth and AJ Wiste of Adams in fifth. The classes heat winners along with Kenny were Swanson and Wheeler.

There was plenty of excitement provided by the "WISSOTA Street Stocks sponsored by Affordable Portables of Kasson". Matt Eustice of Hartland and Ryan Goergen of Stacyville Iowas were looking for a sweep on the night when they lined up on the front row for the classes feature event after each won there heats earlier in the night. Eustice got the early lead with Ryan falling in line second ahead of Bobby Kilby of Austin. Scott Olson of Rochester, who started back in row five made some nice early moves to move into the top five in just five short laps. On lap seven he caught and passed Kilby for third and put the pressure on the top two. On lap eleven Eustice got loose in turn two and Goergen made the move to the lead while Kilby jumped to second with Eustice falling back to third and Olson dropping to fourth. Goergen proceeded to distance him self from the other three as they battled for position. Coming to the white the cars tangled in turn three with Kilby getting the worse of it. After climbing from his car Bobby tossed his helmet at another one of the cars on the track and was quicky DQ'd losing all points and pay for the night. The two lap sprint to the finish ended with Goergen getting the win ahead of Eustice while Wheeler made a nice late recovery to come back for third ahead of Mitch Thomson of New Richland and Olson.

The return of the "WISSOTA Super Stocks sponsored by Triple J Disposal" added one car to its car count in it second week back at the track however the results were the same as the week before as Cole Queensland of Grand Meadow captured his second straight feature win. Cole lead flag to flag after coming off the outside of the front row and taking charge of the main event. Chris Klinger of Austin raced from row two up to a second place finish ahead of heat winner Josh Bartel of Kasson.

The first rollover of the season came in the "S and S Auto Salvage Hornet" Feature event. Cody Boverhuis of Geneva got twisted up in a bad restart coming out of turn four and ended up on his lid. Cody pulled him self from the car quickly and began surveying the damage to see what had to be done to be ready for next week. Meanwhile Gary Stahl of Kasson became yet another driver to start off the year with two quick feature wins. Starting on the pole Gary went right to the front and fought off the challenges of Elijan Zevenbergen of Ocheyeden Iowa and Randy Rauen of Austin for the win. Elijan actually caught and passed Gary about mid race only to have it wiped out by a caution. Elijah almost won the battle of becoming the first car to roll over on the season as on a restart earlier in the race he had the car up on two wheels as he went through turn four. Finishing behind Zevenbergen and Rauen were Kevin Vogt of Rose Creek and Jesse Harang of Northwood Iowa. Stahl and Rauen took the classes heat wins.

Brandon Skalicky of Claremont became another driver to start the year off two for two in feature wins as he captured the "Albert Lea Pizza Ranch sponosred Pure Stock" Feature event. Skalicky started on the pole along with Myles Moreno of Hayfield who each won there heats on the night. Brandon jumped straight to point with Ross Spitzer of Dodge Center jumping out of row two to second. Spitzer kept the pressure on all race long but could do nothing but chase the entire race and settle for second. Daniel Klingfus of Rose Creek did a nice job of working from row four up to third. Wayne Nelson of Freeborn and Sammie Fromm of Owatonna rounded out the top five.

With lightning flashing in the sky off the back straightaway the Big Thunder was on the Track as the "USRA Modifieds sponosred by French's Repair and Fabrication of Dodge Center" rolled onto the track for there main event. Fifteen of the seventeen cars on hand made the call for the start of the race with Alan Mondus of Lakeville drawing the pole for the race.
Mondus went right to the front with Tim Donlinger of Rocheter, who started right behind him in row two staying tight on his back bumper. About six laps in Donlinger had his best run of the race on Mondus as they went side by side for a lap before Alan shook him off and went back out to the point. Donlinger kept the pressure on but this was Mondus's night and he lead flag to flag for his first feature win of the year. Mike Sorensen of Rochester who took the feature win a week ago came home third followed by Mark Noble of Blooming Prairie and Nate Wasmund of Rochester. Heat winners were Donlinger and Wasmund.

Next Friday Night it’s the 11th Annual Mike Guttormson Memorial which will feature one of two highlighted stops by the USMTS Open Modifieds. The USMTS Tour will be in the middle of a six race swing through the area so an excellent field of Modifieds is expected to fill the pits along with the other support classes which will be on hand for the nights activities. Hot laps will be about 7:15 with the racing action set to get underway at 7:30. The special kids friendly promotion for next friday night will be "Kids are Free if they are wearing a Chateau Raceway T Shirt".
