Waits Tops Stellar Field of Modifieds By Bill Nelson SPRING VALLEY, MN (June 14) - Finally a picture perfect day for racing in Southern Minnesota. Clear blue skies, a slight breeze and temps hovering around 80 degrees. The facility dried out from all of the rain and very good track conditions greeted the fans and drivers on John Hardy’s Bar-B-Que and US Army night at the speedway. The Minnesota Jump Club dropped a couple parachutists out to carry the US Army and the US Flag down during opening ceremonies. A great field of cars was on hand along with a sizeable crowd gathered on this day. The racing action started early in the afternoon with racing action on the new 1/5 mile Button Buck Speedway for the running of the Pepsi Slingshots. Three divisions of cars were on hand with the Pee-Wee feature up first featuring the 6-8 year old drivers. Lexi Schott bolted out to an early lead with Brayde Faulhaber in second and Dustin Sorensen in third. Faulhaber kept the pressure on Schott early on entering high and cutting it sharp off the corner but Schott had the momentum to keep him at bat. With five laps down Faulhaber charged to the bottom of the track and got into the side of Schott pushing both cars up over the banking and bringing out the caution. Sorensen assumed the second position on the restart with Matthew Schlisman now in third. Faulhaber took back third on the second lap of green racing as the laps ran out. Schott took home the win followed by Sorensen and Faulhaber The Junior division saw Lucas Schott take the early lead with Nia Gardner and Parker Hale racing side by side for the second spot. Gardner got crossed up on lap two allowing Hale to get by but was able to keep the car moving. Six laps down and Gardner was challenging for the second spot again and on the next lap took the spot Schott was fast up front and continued to dominate the event and slowly pulled out to a strong win followed by Gardner and Hale. The regular division saw Jordan Yaggy leading early with Lucas Schott doing the double duty and sitting in second. Another double duty driver Parker Hale sat in third. Yaggy was too strong up front and slowly pulled away from the field while Hale and Schott continued racing for second. Yaggy scored the win with Hale second and Schott third. Gary Kellner and Roger Poplow rounded out the top five. A slight break was taken before the action cranked up on the big track at Deer Creek Speedway. After some very exciting heat race action the Tim’s Repair and Towing WISSOTA Street Stocks pulled onto the track for their feature event. Karl Hewitt Jr., jumped out to the early lead with the rest of the field two and three wide on the second restart. Ryan Goergen and AJ Zvorak were side by side for second on Hewitt’s bumper. Three laps in and Hewitt got loose in two allowing Zvorak to take over the point. Dan Holland sat in fourth and Fred Prudoehl fifth early on. Behind the top five a great battle was shaping up with Michael Conrad, Jesse Stahl as the closed in on the field. Prudoehl cleared around Holland just as the other two caught them, crating a three wide race for fourth. Holland and Stahl touched on the front straight with Holland spinning and hitting the wall hard in turn one. Other than a couple more cautions the rest of the feature ran mostly single file with Zvorak taking home the win, Goergen in second and Hewitt Jr., in third position. A little track work before the Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modified event saw a lightning fast racing surface with Bob Bunne and Bobby Swanson racing for second early on behind Dan Wheeler who used the front row starting spot to jump into the early lead. The battle for second became the race for fourth as they touch coming out of four with Jared Boumeester and Andrew Wiste blasting by. Fourteen to go and Wheeler was still out front cruising along while Wiste worked past Boumeester for second. The top three steadily pulled away from the field. Brandon Davis moved past Swanson for the fouth position two laps later with Albert Wytaske moving by for fifth. As the front trio stayed put for the remaining five laps Wytaske and Davis had a great battle for fourth with Kenny Wytaske sitting behind them looking for a way past. A very happy Wheeler took home the win with Wiste and Boumeester rounding out the top three. The full fendered US Army WISSOTA Super Stocks have been called the toughest division in WISSOTA racing because of its tight quartered sometimes full contact form of racing, and tonight was one of those classic battles for the win. Brian Fetting took the early lead with Chris Groth in hot pursuit. Adam Stockhausen was in third with Cole Queensland working under Harlan Morehart for fourth. On a lap three restart Groth and Fetting went into four side by side with Fetting pushing up slightly allowing Groth to take over the lead. Queensland was running the low side of the speedway and was able to use that line to work under Stockhausen and Fetting to take over second. Groth was working well up high and Queensland was on the bottom of the speedway, you knew there was going to be a good race. Fourteen to go and they were side by side at the line with Jeff Brauer moving into fifth. A restart with eleven to go saw the race up front tighten up again as they ran nose to tail the next couple laps with Queensland looking for a place to pass. Eight to go Queensland dove into two and slid up into Groth making slight contact as he took the lead. Coming through three and four, Groth powered in low and shot up the banking making contact but also coming out with the lead. On the next lap the two came through four with full side to side contact and they rubbed down the front straight and into one. Queensland came out of two with the lead again as the crowd was now screaming and jumping at the incredible race going on. Out of four you guessed it Groth took control again. The same scenario transpired on the next lap until Groth finally took control and pulled out to small lead over the final three laps taking home the win. Queensland, Stockhausen, Brauer and Josh Rodewald rounded out the top five. The highpowered Valley Featherlite WISSOTA Late Models were up next. Justin Sass led lap number one while Keith Foss hustled his machine around on the low side of the speedway and up from the fourth row starting spot to take the lead on lap three. Dennis Hillson ran behind Sass is third after Foss took the lead. Mike Prochnow, Bob Timm and Ben Mattick were three wide for fourth with Prochnow taking that position. Prochnow quickly moved into third on lap six while Mattick followed through to fourth. A restart with fifteen to go saw Foss lead, Prochnow now sat in third while Sass and Mattick had their hands full with Mark Teske in a great battle for third. Mattick took the spot early but two laps later Teske started charging and moved into third. With ten to go Foss, Prochnow and Teske were nose to tail around the high side of the speedway. Foss moved lower on the track later in the race as did Teske but the running order remained the same with Foss taking home the win. The EZ Fabricating USRA modified feature closed up the program with Ryan Gustin taking the early lead. Brad Waits and Tim Donlinger split the car of Shawn Peterson to drop him back to fourth on lap two. Donlinger got crossed up in four the next lap and how he saved it I am not sure but he dropped back to fourth behind Jason Krohn who was now charging. With five laps completed Waits jumped under Gustin to take the lead with Krohn and Donlinger looking to make ground on Gustin for second. Gustin was up top running the high line as the rest of the leaders stayed down low. Sixteen to go and Krohn was now in second with Donlinger on Gustins rear quarter. Donlinger took the third spot on lap 12 and started to gain on Krohn with Kelly Shryock moving into the fifth spot. The front of the field held this formation to the checkers with Waits taking home his first win of the season at the speedway. Krohn second, Donlinger third and Gustin and Shryock rounding out the top five.
