Chateau Raceway

LANSING, MN (Sept. 6) - The 2008 Hornet Buzz Festival was scheduled for two nights of racing action this past weekend at Chateau Raceway in Lansing, powered by Miners Outdoor Power and Recreation. However rainy weather shortened the weekends schedule to just one night of AMSOIL Dirt Track Racing Series Action on Saturday Night. A great field of 119 cars filled the pits for the action in seven classes with lots of new faces as several drivers were in town for the latest fall special. The racing was hotly contested all night but it was the Affordable Portables WISSOTA Street Stock Class that may have taken the honors for the best show of the night. Five of the top six finishers in the feature were all making there first visit to the track this season and they put on some thrilling side by side action. Devin Neske of Princeton started on the pole and quickly jumped to the front with Ron Hansestad from Glenwood City Wisconsin moving to second on lap two. They were joined a lap later by Tommy Richards of Mondovi and Jim Randall out of Rice Lake Wisconsin. The four of them grouped up with Hanestad pulling up alongside Neske to challenge for the lead while Richards and Randall put the pressure on him and each other. Hansestad worked to the outside on laps six and seven and took the lead by a fender at the stripe on lap seven only to have Neske take the lead back on lap nine. On lap ten Ron was schuffled back to fourth as Randall went to second and Richards pulled up for third. A caution on lap thirteen slowed the action for just a moment as when the green came back out for a two lap sprint to the finish the race was on again. Randall tucked in behind Neske for the restart and than as soon as the green was in the air he was looking for his line again. He found one to the high side in turn three and swung around Neske to take the lead as the field took the white flag. Devin challenged back on the final lap but came up just short as Randall picked up his first feature win of the season at Chateau in his first visit. Richards ended up in third while Allen Gessell Junior of Big Lake, who started dead last in the race came all the way forward to finish in fourth just ahead of Danny Hanson of Elma Wisconsin and Hansestad who ended up backsliding to sixth. 2008 Track Champion A.J. Zvorak of Blooming Prairie took home one of the heat wins with the other going to Tommy Richards.

Despite the abundance of yellow flags waving all night the S and S Auto Salvage Senior Hornet class managed to run the nights only caution free feature. Terry Blowers of Waseca started on the pole and lead the first lap before Ryan Happel of Holmen Wisconsin slid by him for the lead. Mike Blowers of Waseca, who had six feature wins during the regular point season was looking for number seven as he worked out of row four. Each lap he worked his way forward but ran out of laps as he made it up to second just ahead of Jared Boumeester of Waseca. Terry Blowers ended up fourth just ahead of Gary Stahl of Kasson. Happel also took home a win in his heat giving him a sweep for the night. The other heat win went to Jason McShane of Waseca.

In the Junior Hornet class it was Michael Wytaske of Lansing taking home his fifth feature win of the season. Michael went around Garritt Wytaske of Lansing on lap two to take over the lead and never looked back. Garritt held off the classes heat winner Ryan Henderson of Holmen Wisconsin for second with Matt Brooks of Austin just behind them.

Tyler Peterson of Hollandale made a nice run to take home the feature win in the Pizza Ranch Pure Stock class. Peterson stared row four and with the help of some early caution was up to third on lap four behind Wayne Nelson of Freeborn and Wayne Bellrichard of Albert Lea. Nelson was able to open a bit of a lead off the restart on the lap four caution while Peterson had to work to get around Bellrichard for second. A lap nine caution regrouped the field. Off that restart Peterson kept the pressure on Wayne and on lap twelve he dove to the bottom of the track in turn two and made his wining move for the lead. Stacy Krohnberg of Walters worked his way up from row five to finish third just ahead of Bellrichard. Sammie Fromm of Owatonna rounded out the top five. Heat wins in the class went to Nelson and Adam Godeke of Hollandale.

The front row was the place to be Saturday Night and Dan Wheeler of Columbia Heights used it to his advantage in the Power 96 WISSOTA Midwest Modified Feature. Dan rocketed off the pole and lead flag to flag for his third feature win of the season at Lansing. Dan did have some company up front as he felt the pressure from Joel Alberts of Kasson for much of the race. Alberts kept pretty tight to Wheeler until he slipped back to third when Brandon Davis of Medford came by him for second. The battle between the two of them allowed Wheeler to stretch out his lead some and by the time Davis closed up on him there were just two laps to go and Dan was able to hold him off for the win. Jerry Young came home in fourth ahead of a hard charging Bobby Swanson of Kasson. Swanson started all the way back in row nine and came home with a solid top five finish. The class also featured an exciting Consy event. Bob Fisher of Lyle took advantage of some early cautions to come out of a schedule row three starting spot to take the lead skirting three cars on the restart that would actually see the completion of lap one. Eric Condit of Austin meanwhile, starting last in the field, picked his way forward moving up to second about midrace. From there he wasted no time finishing off his charge to the front as he went by Fisher for the lead and cruised onto the win. Harland Morehart of Eyota took third ahead of Jared Happel of Galesville Wisconsin and John Rishavy of Owatonna. The heat wins on the night belonged to Ronnie Rihn of Bloomer Wisconsin, Albert Wytaske of Lansing, and Kenny Wytaske of Lanisng. All three of them had problems in the feature however as they finished thirteenth, twentieth, and eighteenth respectively.

The Triple J Disposal WISSOTA Super Stock feature saw a big third to first move that provided the winning moment for Dan Gullickson of Stacy. Ryan Siegle of Grand Meadow came off the pole to led early with Cole Queensland of Grand Meadow working his way up to second. Gullickson, who stated back in row three, ran fifth on lap one and from there starting picking up a spot each lap. He went to fourth on lap two, third on lap three and was passing Queensland for second on lap four when the caution came out. Sitting third for the restart Gullickson went straight to the top of turns one and two on the restart and went straight to the front and set sail for his second feature win of the season at Chateau. Siegle held on for second ahead of Dustin Nelson of Ogilvie who went around Queensland for third. Cole took fourth holding back Chris Klinger of Austin for that spot. Gullickson also took home a heat win giving him a sweep for the night. Queensland grabbed the classes other heat win.

The Frenchs Repair and USRA Modified Feature saw another driver take advantage of a front row starting spot to grab a flag to flag win. Jacob Dahle of Morristown got to the front on the drop of the green and than hugged the bottom of a dry slick track to hold off all challengers for his second feature win of the season. Todd Scharkey of Kasson worked hard lap after lap trying to get below Dahle but would have driven over the tires that rim the infield corners to get any lower. Todd than tried some shots to the outside which opened the door to the inside for Mike Sorensen of Rochester and Steve Wetzstein of West Concord to slip underneath him. Despite losing two positions at the end Scharkey was working for the win and not just settling for running second. Doug Hillson of Blooming Prairie, who started outside front row, came home in fifth. In another good Consy event on the night Jay Ihrke of Dover made a late pass on Josh Angst of Winona to grab a win. Darwyn Karau of Kasson actually lead much of the race before mechanical problems took him out of the event. Heat winners were Scharkey, Les Duellman of Winona and Dahle who ended up being the third driver on the night to get a sweep.

The 2008 racing season will wrap up in three weeks at Chateau Raceway with the Third Annual Midwest Modified Fall Nationals Friday Night September 26th and Saturday Night September 27th. Despite the name all classes will be competing that night but it will be the Power 96 WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds that will be taking center stage that weekend. One driver in the class could go home with $5000 at the end of the two full nights of racing action. Both nights will be complete shows with heats and features and Friday Nights Midwest Modified winner will be gunning for a $1000 to win first prize, while Saturday Nights feature will be a $2000 to win event. And if one driver can take home the top prize both nights there will be a $2000 bonus check that will be awarded to that driver. That Sunday afternoon, September 28th, has been reserved as a possible rain date in the event weather cuts into either nights program to try to ensure that possibility. Extra money will also be on the line in the other classes as well assuring the pits will be very full for all classes for the 2008 season finale.
