Miners Outdoor Power and Recreation, hosted there third
annual "Midwest Modified Fall Nationals"
LANSING, MN (Sept 27) - Chateau Raceway in Lansing, powered
by Miners Outdoor Power and Recreation, hosted there third annual "Midwest
Modified Fall Nationals" this past weekend. Two full shows featuring all six
of the tracks regular classes over two nights, Friday night and Saturday
night, provided plenty of action as the 2008 Amsoil Dirt Track Racing Season
came to a close.
Drivers kept the show moving along Friday night as the heats were run off in
just over an hour and four of the seven features were run caution free with
a fifth feature being slowed by just one yellow flag. Times were also fast
on the night, and while no track records were set in any class on the night,
two classes did see there fastest times of the season run.
There were plenty of fantastic finishes on the night as well with the
Affordable Portables WISSOTA Street Stock feature providing one of them.
Jesse Stahl of Austin paced the field for the first lap of the main event
before Mike Jans of Clarkfield, who had picked up a heat win earlier in the
night, snuck by for the lead on lap two. Allen Gessell Junior of Big Lake,
who also scored a heat win on the night, followed him up to second and the
two went bumper to bumper and side by side for the rest of the caution free
fifteen lap event. Mike was doing a good job of holding his line and not
giving Allen to much of an openning. Gessell got his fender along side a
couple times but had to keep falling back in line until the two were coming
to the white flag. Allen got a fender below Jans in turn three and held it
there all the way through turn four and they came by the flag stand to take
the white flag side by side. They stayed that way until they came out of
turn two where Gessell was able to clear Mike for the lead and come around
for his fourth feature win of the season at Lansing in six visits. It was
also the fourth time he has swept his heat and feature races in the same
night. 2008 Track Champion AJ Zvorak of Blooming Prairie came home third
ahead of Danny Hanson of Elma Wisconsin and Stahl.
Not to be outdone in the area of fantastic finishes were the Triple J
Disposal WISSOTA Super Stocks. While there race was far from caution free as
they brought out the yellow flag six times in the races first seven laps
they did put on a good show in the stretch run of the race. Dustin Nelson of
Ogilvie started on the pole and wasted no time in taking control of the race
early. Curt Myers of Cameron Wisconsin moved up to second ahead of Dan
Gullikson of Stacy on lap two. The two swapped positions several times
during the early cautions with Gullikson taking control of the spot on lap
seven as the drivers run a strong mid section of the race. While racing each
other they also took turns pulling up along side Nelson and challenging him
for the lead. One final caution came out on lap thirteen of the twenty
lapper when Tony Shaner of Owatonna pulled up in turn three near the wall
and stopped. During the caution Myers suddenly went to the pits with some
sort of mechanical problems leaving just Nelson and Gullickson to continue
the battle. Nelson did a good job of holding off Dan's challenges down the
stretch until the pair were heading to the white flag. Gullickson swung to
the outside and took the lead at the white. Nelson stayed on his low line
and used it to come back under Dan and come around for his first feature win
of the season at Lansing. Shawn Nolan of Annandale drove a nice race coming
out of the middle of the field to take home third ahead of 2008 Track
Champion Cole Queensland of Grand Meadow and Jeff Brauer of Rochester. Myers
and Queensland took the classes heat wins on the night.
The final lap also provided a wild finish in the Pizza Ranch Pure Stock
feature which went caution free. Mark Wolff of Janesville and Craig Hansen
of Dodge Center started on the front row. Wolff took the early lead off the
pole while Hansen fell in line second right on the bumper of Mark. Tyler
Peterson of Hollandale worked from row four up to third on lap five with
Stacy Krohnberg of Walters coming to fourth behind him. The top four ran
some tight close laps through the middle of the race with Krohnberg picking
his way up to second with just a couple laps to go. As the field took the
white flag and headed into turn one Korhberg tried to make a strong move to
the bottom of Wolff. Stacy got hard into Wolff who suddenly slowed out of
turn two with a flat tire. Krohnberg looked to be on his way to the win when
he had a tire go down as well as he came through turns three and four.
Hansen and Peterson lined up and shot around him as they came to the
checkers with Craig picking up his first feature win of the season.
Korhnberg and Wolff limped home on flat tires holding on to third and
fourth. Hansens win capped a sweep for him on then night after he also
picked up a heat win on the night. Dan Klingfus of Rose Creek saw victory
lane for the first time on the season as he also took home one of the
classes heat wins.
The two S and S Auto Salvage Hornet Features also went caution free on the
night. In the Junior Hornet Division Ryan Henderson of Holmen Wisconsin used
a front row starting spot to his advantage as he lead flag to flag for his
first feature win of the year at Lansing in four visits. Michael Wytaske of
Lansing came home in second out dueling cousin Garitt Wytaske of Lansing for
that spot. Matt Brooks and Jacob Stark, both of Austin, rounded out the top
five. Michael took the classes heat win. Mike Blowers of Waseca added to his
win total in the Senior Hornet Divison as swept the class for the third time
this year on his way to his seventh feature win of the season. His two team
mates from Waseca Jason McShane and Terry Blowers made it a sweep of the top
three positions for the trio. Jared Boumeester of Waseca looked like he had
something for Mike as he took the lead away from him for a few laps early in
the race before he suddenly pulled to the pits ending his night early.
French's Repair and Fabrication USRA Modifieds put on a nice feature race
with just one caution slowing the pace. Mark Noble of Blooming Prairie flew
off the front row and stretched out a big lead right off the drop of the
green. However apparently his fuel cap flew off too and fluids were spewing
out the back of his car. The black flag was put out for Mark but before he
pulled from the track the races only yellow flag came out. That allowed
track officials to pull him over and tell him the problem and he headed to
the pits to get it taken care of. When he came back out he restarted at the
back of the field and was flying around cars after the restart. Several laps
later however just past halfway he coasted down the front straightaway and
into the pits with transmission problems. Todd Scharkey of Kason inherited
the lead when Noble went to the pits, but he also had 2008 Track Champion
Mike Sorensen of Rochester on his back bumper. Todd was trying to use the
low wide of the track to make time but Mike found the top line to his liking
and worked his way around Todd on lap eleven of the twenty four lap race.
From there it was clear sailing as Mike was able to stretch out his lead and
go on to claim his third feature win of the year at Chateau Racewy.
The final feature event of the opening night was the Power 96 WISSOTA
Midwest Modified main event. After all it is the "Midwest Modified Fall
Nationals" so they were not about to let all the other classes have all the
fun with those great battles. Greg Pfeifer Junior of Austin and AJ Wiste of
Adams started on the front row and Pfeifer was able to use the inside line
to his advantage as he lead the field around on lap one. The two stayed side
by side through lap two with Wiste getting to the front on lap three.
Brandon Davis of Medford who started right behind Greg in row two took
control of third and watched all the action right in front of him and wasted
no time getting into the mix. He moved past Pfeifer for second and on lap
ten of the twenty five lap main event he found his way to the inside of
Wiste and the two put on a good battle for the lead. On lap sixteen Pfeifer
had a big run to the bottom of the track out of turn four and went to the
point. Greg withstood a couple late restarts to capture his second feature
win of the season at Lansing. Wiste came home in second ahead of Kenny
Wytaske of Lansing, Jim Arnold of Dodge Center and Pfeifer. Davis also took
his heat win giving him a sweep for the night. The other heat winners were
Wiste and Arnold.
The perfect fall weather that greeted fans and drivers on Friday continued
right into Saturday for night two of the "Fall Nationals" . With Brandon
Davis's Feature win on Friday night it set him up for a possible big pay day
for Saturday Night. Davis captured $1000 dollars for his win on the first
night of the Nationals and night twos winner was going to be shooting for a
$2000 payday, except for Davis. Contingency sponsors had an extra $2000
check set aside if the same driver could capture both nights of the Midwest
Modified Fall Nationals and the only one with that chance would be Brandon.
A tough redraw after the heats had him starting outside of row five, along
way from the front, but it was going to be a long thirty lap race. On the
drop of the green pole sitter Albert Wytaske of Lansing, the 2008 Track
Champion in the class, had his car push up high and off of turn two bringing
out the first caution of the race and moving him to the tail end of the
field for the restart. Dan Wheeler of Columbia Heights inherited the pole
and after yet another caution on the second attempt to start the race, he
took off on the third start and pulled out in front of AJ Wiste with Pfeifer
JR settling into third. There was lots of tight racing up front as the
leaders went side by side lap after lap but Wheeler kept a hold of the lead.
Davis meanwhile was picking his way toward the front. He moved up to eighth
on lap three and was up to sixth on lap nine. He was still running sixth
when the third caution of the race came out for a spinning car near the tail
end of the field. Davis used the first couple laps off the restart to pick
up three more spots as the top cars were all bunched up. Bobby Swanson of
Kasson made a big move shooting from third to second on the restart and
continued up the outside taking the lead away from Wheeler on lap seventeen.
Wheeler got the lead back a lap later when Swanson slowed with mechanical
problems. The big winner off the restart though came from the driver who had
started back on the outside of row seven, in the fourteenth starting
position. Bryan Herandez of Blooming Prairie was having trouble getting
through traffic when that lap fourteen caution came out. He was stuck back
in ninth when they restarted them and in two laps he jumped into the top
five. As the leaders were swapping positions he moved up to third on lap
twenty bringing Davis with him up to fourth. Two more laps went in the books
and Hernadez went by Wiste for second and set his sights on Wheeler. While
everyone else was staying between the middle of the track and the bottom
Bryan went top shelf and set sail. Two more laps and as the field completed
lap twenty-four Bryan was side by side with Wheeler at the line and had the
lead by a nose. Over the final laps Bryan kept flying around the top and
went on to score a $2000 payday and his third feature win of the year. Greg
Pfefier JR who had back slide a bit during the middle of the race came home
in second on a big last lap move when he jumped around Wheeler and Davis to
claim the runnerup check. Heat winners for the class were Wiste, Kenny
Wytaske, and Dustin Steinbrink of Austin. A Consy event was won by Jeff
McDonald from Rhinelander Wisconsin.
While Davis did not pick up the bonus money for back to back feature wins
there was a driver on the weekend who did claim a pair of feature wins.
Although there was no extra money on the line Ryan Henderson of Holmen
Wisconsin backed up his feature win on Friday Night with another on Saturday
night in the S and S Auto Salvage Junior Hornets. He also set the track
record for the class in doing so as he became the first hornet driver to
turn a lap under twenty seconds. (19.55 - 61.38 mph avg). Ryan also took the
heat win giving him a sweep on the night. Runnerup in the race was Garitt
Wytaske followed by Zach Sauer of Austin. A bit of a scary moment just past
halfway in the race when Michael Wytaske got his car high off turn two and
rolled it with the car ending up on its side. Michael crawled out of the car
quickly and waved to the crowd before seeing his car towed back to the pits.
It was just the fourth rollover at the track this season with all of them
coming in the Hornet class. In the Senior Division Jesse Harang of Northwood
Iowa swept his way to a pair of wins on the final night of racing. Briana
Grinstead of Austin lead the first lap of the feature before Harang went
around the outside of her on lap two to go to the front. Brad Wilson of
Austin came home in second with Grinstead holding on for third. Harangs
feature win was his first feature win of the season.
After coming up just short in his bid for a win the night before in the
Pizza Ranch Pure Stocks, Stacy Krohnberg used a front row starring spot to
his advantage as he took home his first feature win of the season. Adam
Godeke of Hollandale actually lead the first several laps with Stacy falling
back to third behind Matt Stark of Austin. Stark took the lead briefly on
lap seven only to have Krohnberg come up to second and challenge him for the
lead right away. The two went at it for several laps before Krohberg got the
lead on lap nine. Tyler Peterson came up to take second away from Stark off
a late restart and put the pressure on Krohnberg but for the second night in
a row Tyler had to settle for second place. Stark was third ahead of Dylan
Nelson of Freeborn and Sammie Fromm of Owatonna. Krohnberg also took home a
heat win on the night giving him a sweep for the final night of the year.
The other heat win belonged to Brandon Shaner of Owatonna who got to taste
victory for the first time this season.
A short field of Affordable Portable WISSOTA Street Stocks put on an
exciting feature. Mike Jans who had finished second on Friday night started
on the pole and went straight to the front out running AJ Zvorak for the
early lead. The two along with Devin Neske of Princeton, Jesse Stahl, Danny
Hanson and Allen Gessell Junior stayed in a tight six car pack swapping
positions and lanes lap after lap. The close quarter racing resulted in just
one caution in the fifteen lap feature and Gessell was tagged for the yellow
and taken out of contention for the win. Jans ended up leading every lap on
his way to his first Lansing feature win while Neske outdueld Zvorak for
second. Hansen took fourth ahead of Stahl. The classes lone heat win went to
Zvorak.
After a caution filled feature race on Friday night the Triple J Disposal
WISSOTA Super Stocks ran a much cleaner race on Saturday night with just
three cautions slowing the action. Two of those came in the races first two
laps and from there it went pretty smooth. Curt Myers jumped out of row two
to the front on the drop of the green with Ryan Siegle of Grand Meadow
moving into second ahead of Wyatt Wolf Junior of LaCrosse Wisconsin. Wolf
moved to second on lap six only to have Siegle come back for the spot on lap
nine. Ryan than went outside of Myers on lap fourteen to claim the lead only
to have Myers take it back a lap later. With just over two laps to go and
Myers in the lead Siegle and Wolf made it three wide going into turn three.
Myers ended up getting loose and when the caution flew they tagged him for
the yellow and put him to the tail. Siegle inherited the lead and held off
Wolf for the win with Dan Gullikson worked his way to third. Heat wins went
to Dan Nissalke of Winona and Cole Queensland.
The Frenchs Repair and USRA Modifieds ran a near perfect feature for the
second night in a row. Just like Friday night they had just one caution slow
there action. Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie started on the pole and lead
flag to flag for his third feature win of the season. Steve Wetzstein of
West Conocrd worked from row four up to second and was right up to Myer over
the races final laps trying to find a way by but had to settle for the
runner up spot. Friday Nights feature winner Mike Sorensen came home third
ahead of Todd Scharkey and Mark Noble. Scharkey and Jacob Dahle of
Morristown took the classes heat wins.
With the 2008 racing season now in the books the track is in the process of
planning its end of season awards banquet. Information will be available on
the tracks website in the near future. Than planning will begin for the
annual spring car show and the 2009 racing season.
