HARTLAND NATIONALS CLOSE 2008 DEER CREEK SPEEDWAY SEASON
by Bill Nelson
SPRING VALLEY, MN (Oct 4) - One Hundred Cars showed up to race for the added
money during the running of this weekends Hartland Nationals event at Deer
Creek Speedway. During the racing action on Friday the 15-lap Heat races
were ran for all five classes along with dash's for the cars qualifying for
the dash. During the dash for the cars that qualified, the top six at the
finish were automatically moved into the Saturday night feature with the
rest of the dash cars sitting on the front rows of the "B" features. On
Saturday the dash winners drew for an inversion number to determine the
starting order of the top six cars. Two "B" features were ran to set the
inside and outside rows for the main events on Saturday night.
The first Saturday night feature ran was the Regular division of the Pepsi
Slingshots. It was a treat to have three drivers make the tow from the Jew
Jersey/New York area to compete with us on this final weekend of racing.
Bill and Emily VanInwegen from Sparrowbush New York and Rob Marino from
Frenchtown New Jersey were on hand to test out the newly built Button Buck
Speedway. Local slingshot driver Lucas Schott showed them all the fast way
around the speedway taking home the win. Parker Hale came home second while
the travelers Emily VanInwegen finished third, Bill finishes fourth and Rob
Marino finished seventh.
The racing action on the main track was up next with the "B" features
complete the starting fields were set. Up first was the 20lap $1,000 to win
WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature event. Jimmie Arnold and Ric Fynbo jumped
from the front row and stayed side by side for the first two laps as did
most of the field behind them. Fynbo was credited with lap two while Albert
Wytaske moved past Arnold for second. With four laps completed Wytaske moved
into the lead as Fynbo pushed up the speedway. Arnold gained momentum and
moved into second on the next lap with Brandon Davis and Kenny Wytaske were
side by side for fourth. Davis took over fourth and moved up to race with
Arnold with fifteen to . Davis took third as he followed Fynbo around the
Arnold machine which was ailing with heavy smoke as the first caution flew.
On the restart Dan Wheeler now sat in fifth with heavy pressure from Jerry
Young. Up front on the second lap Davis was pressuring Wytaske for the lead.
Wytaske held on to the lead while Davis ran on his inside rear quarter panel
for most of the remaining race. Kenny, Young and Wheeler kept an exciting
race going on behind the leaders. With three to go the leaders were dead
even at the line, but Wytaske kept digging on the high side and took home
the win, followed by Davis, Kenny, Wheeler and Young. A very entertaining
race and a great way to kick off the nights feature activities.
Next up was the 20 lap $500.00 to win WISSOTA Street Stock feature. Allen
Gessell Jr and Danny Hanson put on the show early on up front. Hanson held
the lead and Gessell was working him hard while Jimmy Patzner and Jesse
Stahl were side by side for third. Stahl took second on lap two while AJ
Zvorak working into the top five. A restart saw Stahl now sitting behind
Hanson in second while Patzner now raced with Troy Voth. Voth took third
with fifteen to go. On lap seven Stahl, Hanson and Voth went three wide for
the lead. Stahl running up against the wall took the lead. Stahl slowly
pulled away from the field while Hanson and Voth continued the battle for
second. With seven to go Zvorak moved up to challenge Voth for third and
took the spot. Zvorak continued to move forward and with two to go raced
Hanson for the runner up spot. At the line it was Stahl taking home the win
followed by Zvorak and Hanson.
Cale Berry jumped out to the early lead in the 25 lap $1500 to win WISSOTA
Super Stock feature event with Cole Queensland and Shawn Huse racing for
second. Huse took the spot and started to pressure Berry for the lead.
Brandon Jensen quickly moved into the third spot as a caution flew with four
complete. Berry led on the restart while the field stayed two by two for two
laps. Ross Dixon took over third as Huse lost the handle on his machine on
lap eight. Jensen and Dixon now raced side by side for three laps until
another caution flew. On the restart Dixon raced Berry for the lead and took
it on the next lap. Further back a lot of two and three wide racing
continued as Dustin Nelson, Ryan Siegle and Dan Gullikson all tried their
hands inside the top five. At the finish it was National Point leader Ross
Dixon with the win, Berry second and Jensen third.
Steve Wetzstein showed his strength early in the thirty lap $2,000 to win
USRA Modified feature event. Les Duellman worked under him on lap two but
Wetzstein charged right back into the lead. Bob Timm quickly worked into
third. A restart on lap five saw Tim Donlinger work into third with Timm in
second as Duellman dropped back to fourth. Donlinger and Timm fought back
and forth over the next eight laps for the second spot until another caution
slowed the field down. On the restart Timm and Wetzstein raced side by side
for two laps, exchanging lines and positions until Timm took control of the
race and cruised home to the win. Donlinger chased Wetzstein home for third
with Nate Wasmund and Mark Noble rounding out the top five.
Mike Prochnow jumped out to a huge lead and led every lap of the $4,000 to
win 40 lap WISSOTA Late Model feature. Brent Larson took the second spot
with Jake Redetzke pushing on his rear bumper almost every lap. With fifteen
laps completed Prochnow ran into lapped traffic but cruised through them
without issue. With the half way point coming up Adam Hensel found the high
groove working well and moved past Rick Hanestad for the fourth position.
Hensel took third on the next lap and then moved past Larsen for second
until he touched the front wall a little hard cutting down a tire. On the
restart Keith Foss moved past Hanestad for the fourth spot. Justin Fegers
now found the high side to his liking and moved around Hanestad and then
Foss to take over fourth. With three to go Fegers met the same fate as
Hensel and slowed with a flat tire. Prochnow took home the win, followed by
Larson and Redetzke.
