Chateau Raceway (Lansing, MN)
by: Matthew Grage

LANSING, MN (April 10) - Chateau Raceway in Lansing, powered by Miners Outdoor and Recreation, kicked off the 2009 racing season Friday Night with a solid field of over ninety cars on hand. Domination was the theme of the night as six of the seven feature winners on the night also claimed heat wins thus kicking off there season with clean sweeps. Starting the parade of drivers coming home with a pair of wins on the night was Pizza Ranch Pure Stock driver Brandon Shaner of Owatonna. Brandon lead flag to flag in claiming his heat win at the start of the night after coming off the outside of the front row. He drew the outside front row for the feature as well and with the help of a quick caution was able to lead that race flag to flag as well for the win. On the initial start Samantha Stark of Austin got a nice jump from the pole and was on her way to leading the first lap, however a group of cars near the tail end of the field got twisted up bringing out a caution and setting up a complete restart. Off the second attempt at starting the race Shaner got the better jump and got to the point with Stark falling in line second. Samantha chased him all the way to the checkers as she ended up settling for second. Dylan Nelson of Freeborn made a nice run from a starting spot in row six to come home in third ahead of Brady Korhnberg of Walters and James Connors of Waseca. Connors picked up the classes other heat win on the night.

In the RS Auto Rebuilders WISSOTA Street Stock class the top dog was Tim Johnson was made the long haul down from Brainerd. Johnson also took advantage of a pair of front row starts in both his events to lead all but one lap of racing action. He lead flag to flag in claiming the win in the classes only heat. In the feature he trailed Jesse Stahl of Austin for the first lap before making his move to the front. A.J. Zvorak of Blooming Prairie worked his way to second while Cory Crapser of Eau Claire Wisconsin came from the tail end of the field to take third. Tony Konold who traveled all the way from Clear Lake South Dakota took fourth ahead of Stahl.

Dan Wheeler of Columbia Heights showed the way in Power 96 WISSOTA Midwest Modified action. Dan made a nice run from back in row three in his heat to work his way to a win, them followed that up with a flag to flag win in the feature. Despite leading every lap in the main event he had his hands full for all twenty laps. Ronnie Rihn of Bloomer Wisconsin put the pressure on early before Bryan Hernandez of Blooming Prairie came forward from row three to menace Dan over the races final laps. Hernadez, who is actually driving the car Wheeler ran last year, moved past Rihn on lap fourteen for second bringing Brandon Davis of Medford with him. Hernadez made several runs up alongside Wheeler over the races final laps before having to settle for a runner up finish. Davis ended up third ahead of Rihn and Joe Horgdahl of Kasson. Hernadez claimed the classes other heat win.

The Farm Boy BBQ WISSOTA Super Stocks were the only class to not have a clean sweeper on the night. Dan Gullickson of Stacy lead flag to flag in the classes heat race after starting on the pole but in the main event it wa Don Eischens of Richmond Wisconsin who would pull into victory lane. Eischens had the advantage of the front row in the feature while Gullickson started in row two. Off the drop of the green Eischens shot to the point while Gullikson moved up to second. The field ran caution free for the entire eighteen laps of the race with Dan hanging just a few car lengths back off Eischens back bumper. He was never able to really make a serious run at Don as he claimed the season opening feature win in the class.

Brad Waits of Zumbrota, who has won the National USRA Modified Championship the past two years, got a good start on trying to make it three in a row as he posted a pair of wins in the French's Repair and Fabrication USRA Modified Division. Waits was front row in his heat and was able to lead flag to flag to claim that win. In the feature he started in row two and ran second behind Josh Reisch of Luverne on lap one. A caution while the field was working lap two set up a restart with Waits lined up behind Reisch. With the double wide restart behind the leader Brad took the outside line for the restart. Off the drop of the green he pulled up on Reisch going into turn one and quickly shot to the bottom of the track and swept to the lead. While he was working on trying to open up a lead Mike Sorensen of Rochester was working on moving toward the front. Starting back in row five Mike moved up to fourth in just three laps, was up to third on lap five, and made the move to second on lap seven. As the race came to midway Sorensen was able to get with in a car length of two in the corners but Waits was able to stretch it back out a bit down the straightaways. After about four laps of Mike getting those good runs on him Brad turned it up a notch and stretched his lead back out just as the field caught the tail end of the field and started lapping cars. After that early yellow the field ran caution free the rest of the way with Waits and Sorensen finishing one-two. Doug Hillson of Blooming Prairie came home third followed by Steve Wetstein of West Conocrd and Resich. Sorensen picked up the classes other heat win.

In the S and S Auto Salvage Hornet classes it was Michael Wytaske of Lansing sweeping the Junior Division while Mike Blowers of Waseca took the Senior Division.
