LANSING, MN (April 17) - After a cold season opener last week Mother Nature provided a perfect spring day with temperatures near seventy degrees for week two of racing action at Chateau Raceway in Lansing powered by Miners Outdoor Power and Recreation. The warm weather brought out a great field of cars and a good crowd for the nights action which was highlighted by a nice field of twenty-three French's Repair and Fabrication USRA Modifieds. Mike Sorensen of Rochester pulled a front row starting spot for the main event and lead flag to flag to capture his first feature win of the young season. He also grabbed a heat win giving him a sweep on the night. After two weeks of action Mike has finished first or second in each of his races, last week he won his heat and placed second in the feature. His consistency over the first two weeks has him sitting atop the point standings. Steve Wetzstein of West Concord who started on the pole ran second the entire race with Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie running third the entire distance. Behind those three there was quite a bit of action however as Brad Waits of Zumbrota who took the feature win last week came all the way from the outside of row six to finish fourth ahead of Doug Hillson of Blooming Prairie. Doug worked out of row five for his top five finish. The classes other heat wins went to Josh Mattick of Austin and Brian Shaw of Brownsdale. The only drivers hotter than Sorensen after two weeks are a pair of S and S Auto Salvage Hornet Drivers. In the Junior Division Michael Wytaske of Lansing scored a sweep for the second week in a row making him perfect so far on the year, while Senior Division driver Mike Blowers of Waseca has also scored sweeps in the first two weeks of the season. Brandon Shaner of Owatonna has the exact same stat totals as Sorensen as he leads the points in the Pizza Ranch Pure Stock Class. He backed up his season opening sweep from last week with a second place finish in his heat and his second feature win of the early season. Brandon started row five in the feature and was stuck back in traffic but a rash of cautions took out several cars in front of him and opened up the track some for him and he was able to move to the lead just after halfway in the main event. Brady Krohnberg of Walters started just behind Shaner in row six and pretty much followed him through the field as he moved up to second at the finish. Dustin Sletten of Owatonna who had scored a heat win at the start of the night had started on the front row of the feature and lead early before fading to third. Stacy Krohnberg of Walters and Ryan Henderson of Holmen Wisconsin rounded out the top five. Also taking home heat wins in the class were James Connors of Waseca and Sammie Fromm of Owatonna. In picking up her second career checkered flag at Lansing Sammie became the first of the ladies to take home a win this year. So far this year eight ladies have competed in racing at Chateau as the number of girls racing at Lansing has increased over the past three years. Friday night seven of the eight that have raced this year were on hand to compete. One of the wildest finishes of the night came in the RS Auto Rebuilders WISSOTA Street Stock Class. Jesse Stahl of Austin and Tim Johnson of Brainerd put on a great show in a caution free main event. Stahl started outside front row and quickly jumped to the front while Johnson who lined up outside of row three took just two laps to move up to second. Tim, the feature winner on opening night, closed up on Stahl and the two ran side by side much of laps three and four with Jesse maintaining the lead. Johnson ran in line with Stahl for much of the middle of the race looking for an opening which came on lap eleven. Jesse bobbled a bit in turn four pushing up the track opening the bottom for Tim who slid under him to take over the lead. It was short lived however as Stahl came back in turn two and retook the top spot. With just a few laps remaining Johnson kept the pressure on and as they came to the checkers they split inside and outside of a slower car coming to the line three wide. With a car in between them as they crossed the finish line it appeared Stahl had held on to win but it was obviously close and left room for a little doubt in your mind. Fortunately Lansing uses the same Transponder System that is used by NASCAR and the computer screen confirmed Stahls win by the narrowest of margins, two-thousands of a second (.002). The rest of the top five were Tony Konold of Clear Lake South Dakota, Mike Jans of Clarkfield, and Tyler Peterson of Hollandale. Stahl also scored a heat win on the night giving him a sweep. AJ Zvorak of Blooming Prairie took the classes other heat win. Ryan Siegle of Grand Meadow scored a sweep in the Farm Boy BBQ WISSOTA Super Stock class as he came away with the classes heat and feature wins. The feature race saw a bit of a rarity when the race leader was black flagged under green with nobody around him. Jeff Brauer of Rochester shot out of row two to the front on the drop of the green and proceeded to open up a huge advantage over the rest of the field. However about six laps in fuel started to spray out of the back of his car causing an obvious danger for the rest of the field as the black flag was shown for him. Jeff circled the track a few more laps obviously in disbelief that the black was for him before he finally pulled off. Brauer came close several times last year to getting his first Chateau Feature win in the class since moving up and he was on his way to getting it Friday Night before a bit of bad luck snatched it away. Cole Queensland of Grand Meadow took second followed by Josh Bartel of Kasson, Dave Moffit of Austin and Brett Dulas of Waseca who rounded out the top five. While waiting for his local track to open for the season Shane Sabraski of Rice Wisconsin has traveled to Lansing the first two weeks of the year to get in some early action in the Power 96 WISSOTA Midwest Modified Class. After not even being able to crack the top ten last week he came back with the magic touch. He drew a front row starting spot for the main event and withstood a barrage of yellow flags to lead flag to flag for his first feature win of the young season. Albert Wytaske of Lansing came out of row two to put pressure on him early but had his hands full down the stretch with Brandon Davis of Medford to hold onto second. The two swapped spots a couple times during the race before Wytaske came home with the runner up spot. Bryan Hernadez of Blooming Prairie crossed fourth ahead of Bobby Sorensen of Rochester. Greg Pfeifer Junior of Austin ended up being credited with fifth however when Sorensen went to his trailer after the race instead of the Tech Shack to be scaled as a top five finisher. Sorensen was DQ'd for the slip up. Racing action continues next Friday Night at 7:30 at Chateau Raceway in Lansing, just five miles north of Austin in Southern Minnesota.
