Fresh Faces In Victory Lane At Chateau Raceway Friday Night
by: Matthew Grage
LANSING, MN (April 24) - Week three of AMSOIL Dirt Track Racing Series
Action at Chateau Raceway in Lansing, powered by Miners Outdoor and
Recreation of Blooming Prairie, saw plenty of fresh faces in victory lane
with four of the five feature winners on the night picking up there first
wins of the season. Four other drivers also saw the checkers fly for them
for the first time this season in the nights opening heat events. For the
third week in a row the car count was over ninety setting up a night with
lots of action to be spread out over the seven different classes. Mother
Nature was on everybodys mind as welll as rain was heading in and the
question wasn't if it was going to rain, but rather when it would hit.
Drivers did a good job of moving things right along in the heats with a
minimum number of cautions. The track did not take much of an intermission
as they only took enough time to get the line ups out before sending out the
first features of the night shortly after eight-thirty. Things went pretty
smooth until the Power 96 WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds rolled onto the track
and proceeded to stumble through a half a dozen yellow flags which resulted
in there feature being cut by five laps to speed things along. The front row
was eliminated in the first two cautions before one lap could be completed.
That moved AJ Wiste of Adams up from row two to the pole for the third
attempt to start the race and he immediately went to the front and
maintained a lead for the entire race surviving multiple restarts to take
home his first feature win of the season. Jerry Young of Blooming Prairie
who started in row two after the early cautions came out of a wild three car
battle to take second ahead of Albert Wytaske of Lansing. Brandon Davis of
Medford was the third driver in that mix for most of the race until he was
tabbed with one of the cautions about midway through the race and was sent
tail end. Davis eventually came back to finish seventh. Also finishing in
the top five were Jason Born of Medford and Greg Pfeifeir JR of Austin. Heat
wins in the class went to Wytaske, Bryan Hernandez of Blooming Prairie and
Davis. Hernadnez had a good run going in the feature and was in the top five
before he broke down causing one of the cautions that slowed the pace of the
race.
Jesse Stahl of Austin had the crowd a little concerned in the main event of
the RS Auto Rebuilders WISSOTA Street Stock class. In turn two right off the
start Matt Paczkowski of Hollandale who had sat on the pole got turned
around. As the first half of the field was clearing him Stahl, who was
coming from the back half of the pack, did not see him and ran square into
him. Matt drove his car away but Jesse sat in his car for quite awhile while
the ambulance crew talked to him. Several minutes passed before he finally
crawled out of his car to the cheers of the crowd. He waved and slowly made
his way into the ambulance to get checked out, apparently OK but sure to be
very sore for several days. When the field restarted Tony Konold, who has
made the long trip from Clear Lake South Dakota for each of the first three
weeks of the season, put his machine out front. AJ Zvorak of Blooming
Prairie moved up from a row behind him to pull up to second. Tony stretched
out a pretty nice lead during the first few laps before AJ started reeling
him back in. Zvorak had it down to a couple car lenths as they hit lapped
traffic with less than a hand full of laps to go. That traffic had them
bumper to bumper until the final lap when Tony cleared the last of the cars
in front of him and was able to come home with this first feature win of the
2009 season. Dan Holland of Brownsdale took third followed by Jesse Baer of
Minnesota Lake and Ryan Goergen of Stacyville Iowa. Stahl and Zvorak took
home the classes wins in the two heats.
The Pizza Ranch Pure Stocks also saw a driver claim his first feature win of
the year. Brady Krohnberg of Walters worked his way from row four to the
front at the midpoint of the race and proceeded to pull away from the field
for the win. Adam Godeke of Hollandale startred on the outside of the front
row and he and poll sitter Jake Siemers of Hayfield ran one-two for much of
the early stages of the race before Brady came up on them. Krohnberg was up
to third on lap six and from there jumped to the front with a nice move to
the bottom of turn two which shot him past Godeke and into the lead. Adams
held on for second ahead of Brandon Shaner of Owatonna who had won the first
two features of the season in the class. Siemers came home in fourth
followed by Dylan Nelson of Freeborn. Sammie Fromm of Owatonna, Shaner and
Godeke claimed heat wins for the class. It was Godeke's first win of the
year in his heat.
Josh Reisch of Luverne made the trip to Lansing for the second week in a row
and came away with a pair of wins for his effort. Reisch lead flag to flag
in both of his races as he used front row starting spots to his advantage
both times. He jumped out to a nice lead in the main event leaving the rest
of the field to battle behind him. Steve Wetzstein of West Concord out
dueled Mike Sorensen of Rochester for second while Tommy Myer of Blooming
Prairie held off Doug Hillson of Blooming Prairie for fourth. The race ended
up being cut short as the rains that had been expected showed up as the race
just made it past the halfway mark. A caution slowed the field just past
halfway and as they were lining up for the restart light rain started to
fall and with the drivers being asked to give a thumbs up or thumbs down on
trying to restart the consensus was thumbs down and the caution and checkers
flew together to end the race and the night. Along with Reisch, also taking
heat wins were Myer and Alan Mondus of Lakeville. Myer and Mondus were also
first time winners on the season with there heat wins.
The only class that did not see a new winner in victory lane at the end of
there feature was the Farm Boy BBQ WISSOTA Super Stocks. Ryan Siegle of
Grand Meadow visited victory lane for the second week in a row in the class
after he and Cole Queensland of Grand Meadow had a spirited battle in there
feature. Siegle passed early leader Brett Dulas of Waseca on lap two with
Queensland following him and moving up into second. Cole kept the heat on as
Ryan kept protecting the bottom line. Queensland eventually went to the high
line and ran side by side with Ryan for much of the middle section of the
race. He eventaully pulled to the lead on lap twelve but Ryan stayed tight
inside him trying to work his way back to the front. With less than two laps
to go they came out of turn two side by side with Queensland on the outside
knowing they would be coming to the white flag. Coles car ended up jumping
high toward the wall as they went down the back straightaway and as he got
into the wall Ryan pulled away to the win and Cole turned his damaged
machine into the infield as the race wound down. Brett Dulas who claimed a
heat win earlier in the night, his first checkers of the season, came home
in third ahead of Josh Bartel of Kasson and Dave Moffit of Austin.
The rains left two races to be run at the end of the night. The S and S Auto
Salvage Junior and Senior Hornet features will be made up at the start of
next Friday Nights show. Michael Wytaske of Lansing in the Junior Divison
and Mike Blowers of Waseca in the Senior Division will be trying to continue
there domination in there respective divisions. Both claimed there heat wins
on the night and are a perfect five for five on the season so far with three
heat wins and two feature wins. They will each see the track three times
next week with make up features and the nights regular heat and feature to
try and continue there run. Racing action next friday night will get
underway at 7:30 at Chateau Raceway in Lansing, just five miles north of
Austin.
