Hofer Dominates in First Career Super Stock Feature

by Bill Nelson

SPRING VALLEY, MN (May 9) - Wet track conditions forced the cancellations of this week's Pepsi slingshot races due to the earlier 2:00 start time.  Without the ability to get the slingshot races in the track crew were able to spend their time trying to get the big speedway prepared for racing action.  It wasn't an easy battle and after a ton of work a very good but slightly heavy speedway was ready for racing action.

The Jim's Auto Care WISSOTA Street Stocks took to the track first after some track prep work from the hard working track crew.  Dan Holland led through turn one and two with Danny Hanson close behind in second. Hanson quickly worked into the lead with Karl Hewitt Jr., moving into the second spot on lap two.  Cory Crapser moved into third after working around Holland on lap three while Hewitt Jr. was riding around the bottom and moved into the lead with the left front tire dancing over the ground.  On the next lap Crapser moved up to race with Hanson for second and took the spot two laps later as he chased down the leader.  Chuck Nerland worked into the top five early and raced with Holland for the remainder of the race.  The top three continued to pull slowly away from the field with Crapser chasing down Hewitt Jr., for the lead.  With nine to go Crapser pulled into the lead and took home the win, Hewitt Jr. took home second followed by Hanson, Holland and Nerland.

Dustin Scott led the Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature with Travis Krause close behind in second.  Chris Gilbertson and Jared Boumeester were racing hard for third while the rest of the field was two and three wide early on.  Scott continued to pull slowly away from the field while Krause and Boumeester raced for second.  Brandon Davis worked into the fourth spot with fourteen to go while AJ Wiste and Bryan Hernandez raced side by side for fifth.  With ten to go Scott had pulled out to a straightaway lead while the second through fifth positions were close and hotly contested.  Three laps later Scott started working lapped traffic and the rookie driver looked like a seasoned vet as he weaved through the slower cars.  Unfortunately his lead was negated as a caution flew with five to go.  On the restart Scott lost control of the car and brought out another caution ending his chance for his first feature win.  On the restart Krause led with Boumeester in second.  With another lap complete Boumeester charged low under Krause and came out with the lead.  With Boumeester out front Wiste and Davis now were racing Krause for second.  As the white flag flew Wiste and Davis crossed side by side for second.  Boumeester came home with the win, Wiste second, Davis third and Krause and A. Wytaske rounded out the top five.

Although there were only eleven US Army WISSOTA Super Stocks on hand four of them were all that were needed for an outstanding race.  After an initial caution the field took off with Michael Hofer getting the jump on the field.  Bob Fort sat in second while Cole Queensland moved into third.  Hofer was quick early and started to slowly distance himself from Fort in second.  With five laps completed Queensland moved low to try and work under Fort for second.  Fort and Queensland ran side by side for four laps until Shawn Huse and Jeff Brauer moved up to race for the same positions.  This set up a close formation of side by side racing nose to tail from lap seven until three laps to go.  Fort, Queensland, Huse and Brauer ran very close with Fort holding onto second, Queensland and Huse swapped third many times while Brauer kept everyone honest.  A caution with three to go negated the straightaway lead that the rookie driver Hofer had built up.  Hofer led on the restart while Huse took over second, Brauer Queensland and Fort rounded out the top five as the crossed the line in that order.  Hofer took home his first ever WISSOTA Super Stock feature win.

After a complete restart Joe Ludemann led the Altenburg Construction WISSOTA Late Model feature with Doug Herrick in second and Keith Foss driving up through into the third spot.  On lap two Herrick pushed up in four causing Foss to slow and allowing Lance Matthees to move from fourth to second.  Foss regained third as Herrick dropped back.  A restart with twenty two to go saw Ludemann leading, Matthees in second while Foss had his hands full of Kerry Hanson.  Matthees quickly moved outside of Ludemann and took over the lead.  Foss moved into second two laps later and the lead duo slowly moved away from the field.   With seventeen to go Hanson moved into third while Kevin Kuehn moved into the top five.    With twelve to go Nick Herrick was on a charge on the top side of the speedway.  Nine to go and third place running Hanson slowed up bringing out the caution.  Jesse Redetzke used the restart to his advantage and moved around everyone to take over second as they came out of turn two.  Foss  kept his low line working and with five to go moved into second again and slowly tried to pressure Matthees for the win.  At this line it was Matthees, Foss, Redetzke, Herrick and Ludemann in the top five.

Announced at the pit meeting tonight was that a new bonus was being added to the EZ Fabricating USRA Modified class.  The Chimney Sweep award for the modified driver who wins his heat and the feature event that night.  The driver will receive a $100 bonus making it possible for a driver to take home $1,000 for a feature win at the speedway if qualified through the normal $800 to win event, the $100 sweep bonus and the $100 Travel Plaza sticker program.  Nate Wasmund and Todd Scharkey paced the field with Wasmund taking the lead early on.  Steve Wetzstein and Mike Sorensen were side by side for third.  Wasmund continued up front running the middle of the track while Sorensen tried to work past Scharkey by running higher and Wetzstein tried the same thing running lower than the leaders.  With five completed Scharkey got a little loose with Sorensen moving low to miss him, clipping Jay Ihrke who was in fifth bringing out a caution.  On the restart Wasmund continued to lead Sorensen moved into second.  With eighteen to go Sorensen and Wasmund crossed the line side by side with Sorensen slowly taking the lead.  Four laps later Wetzstein and Wasmund now raced for second.  Wetzstein took second while Ryan Gustin was flying up high.  Gustin worked into the top five and  soon claimed the third spot but shorlty thereafter brought out the caution for a flat tire.  On the restart Sorensen again led the field but Wetzstein was working the low side well.  The two crossed the line close with three to go but Sorensen was hooked up on the high side and held on for the win, Wetzstein second, Bob Timm came home third with Dan Bohr working up from eleventh to take home fourth followed by Alan Mondus in fifth.

Racing action resumes next week with the Pepsi Slingshots at 2:00 and the speedway racing at 5pm.
