SPRING VALLEY, MN (May 23) - With overcast skies the Memorial Day weekend was kicked off at the Deer Creek Speedway in a big way. During the day racing action started at 2:00 with the Pepsi Slingshots on the Button Buck Speedway while in the Hospitality area Miner's Outdoor and Rec were doing demos on their yard care products and golf carts and 4-wheelers along with great food. As the day progressed the skies cleared and the racing action heated up on Deer Creek Speedway
First racing of the day saw the Junior division of the Pepsi Slingshots pull onto the button buck speedway with Dustin Sorensen pulling in to the early lead After one lap was completed a restart was needed and on the restart something new happened for the speedway. After some contact from another driver Sorensen found his car turned sideways on the front straight then as the tires dug into the speedway over it went. Sorensen rolled a complete turn landing on his wheels. After some quick tire work the car fired up and rejoined the field. On that ensuing restart Derek Clement used the high line to work around the Sorensen machine to take over the lead. Clement slowly pulled out front and cruised home to his first ever Pepsi Slingshot feature win with Sorensen coming home third and Matthew Schlisman third.
The Peewee division was uneventful with Jackson Hale pulling into the lead early and running away with it to the checkers. JT Wasmund finished a strong second and Jim Chisholm in the top three
Parker Hale led lap one of the Regular Slingshot division Jeremy Paulson looked for a way past early until the yellow waved. On the restart the top two stayed in formation while Brady Keefe lost power and pulled of the speedway. Sydney Alberts worked on Paulson for the rest of the race but was unable to muster up a pass following Paulson and Hale across the line.
The Dirt Doctor Trucking Midwest Modifieds were next to hit the track with Bob Bunne taking the early lead. Dustin Scott took the second spot with Jerry Young in third early on. The first restart was with thirteen to go, Bunne continued to lead with Brandon Davis working on Young for third. Young continued to hold the third spot and started to work to the low side of Scott for second. Another restart with nine to go saw Bunne continue to lead while Scott, Young and Davis went three wide for second. On the next lap Bunne was now three wide with Young and Davis for the lead as they dropped Scott back to fourth. Davis took over the lead out of four with Young following into second. Davis took home the win again with Young and Scott rounding out the top three.
Kevin Hager led early in the US Army WISSOTA Super Stock with Ryan Siegle sitting in second early. With two completed Siegle slid up in front of Hager to take over the lead. Michael Hofer sat in third for two laps until he pushed up the speedway allowing Cole Queensland and Jeff Brauer to move past. Queensland quickly started to pressure Hager for second while Brauer sat on his inside looking for some room to pass also. Queensland moved into second with Brauer keeping pace into third. With thirteen to go Queensland looked low on Siegle and then drove it in deep to slide up and take away the lead from Siegle. Queensland had a fast car and after clearing Siegle took off to run home with the win, Siegle came home second followed by Brauer.
The 35 lap $2,000 to win United States Modified Touring Series race was the last race of the night. Typically a car runs away in this series but not tonight. There were some great races throughout the field with some cars charging up through the field from deep in the pack but the action up front from the "3" cars had the crowd jumping and cheering during the race. The 3d car of Tim Donlinger took the lead on lap one only to be passed by the other 3 Kelly Shryock on lap two. Shryock held the lead on the top cushion of the speedway while Donlinger worked the lower side of the speedway. Side by side at the line many times in the early laps but Shryock continued to hold the slight advantage The car on the charge early was Jason Cummins who worked into the third spot with five down. Donlinger kept working the low line and with seven down pinched Cummins into the back stretch wall but both were able to continue but now Donlinger knew he had one working his outside. With nine laps completed Jason Hughes worked into the top five while Cummins and Donlinger had a great battle going on switching spots . A caution with fifteen down changed a lot. On the restart Shryock took off into the lead while Cummins blasted by Donlinger on the top side. On the next lap Cummins dove into the bottom and drifted up in front of Shryock to take the lead leaving Donlinger and Shryock to race for second. Cummins in the next five laps pulled out to a straightaway lead then a little smoke and a rough sounding engine sickened the crowds hearts. With thirteen laps left Cummins pulled up lame on the top of the speedway ending his strong run. On the restart Shryock and Donlinger were again racing for the lead however this time Donlinger took the lead with Shryock looking to get by. Ryan Gustin was now the man on a mission and blew through the top eight cars to settle into third. Gustin started working on Shryock for second and they swapped the spot many times until Shryock regained control with three to go. Donlinger pulled out to a couple car length lead and took home the win with Shryock second, Gustin third, Hughes fourth and Dan Bohr working into the top five.
