History Made At Chateau Raceway with First Female Feature Winner in Track History
by: Matthew Grage

LANSING, MN (June 26) - With as many rainouts as there been this season at Chateau Raceway in Lansing, powered by Miners Outdoor Power and Recreation of Blooming Prairie, its hard to complain about the weather when you do go to race.  But for the second weekend in a row temperatures were up around the ninety degree mark and with a high heat index and stifling humidity it made for a muggy night of AMSOIL Dirt Track Racing Series action at the three-eights mile track just north of Austin.   Despite the warm conditions a good crowd was on hand for the nights racing and a good field of cars put on a hot show with those who stuck around until the end getting to see some Track History created.

Just Four days short of the Fifty-Third anniversary of the track opening on June 30th 1956,  Briana Grinstead of Austin became just the second Female Feature winner in a fully competitive race class in the tracks history.   Briana joined Amanda Adams of Stacyville Iowa as the only winners by a Lady in a feature race.  Amanda turned the trick in the fall of 2007 while also racing in the Hornet class.    With the increase in the number of ladies competing on a weekly basis there could be more coming.  Briana, driving in the S and S Auto Salvage Senior Hornet Division, has finished in the top five in points at the track the past two years in the division and was in the top five again this year before having to take a night off so she could participate in her High School Graduation Ceremony earlier this month.   The class had to run an extra race on the night as there feature race from a week ago was suspended after Jim Briggs of Waseca had crashed his car into the wall coming out of turn two and dislocated a ankle.   Jim needed to be transported in the ambulance to the hospital that night so instead of keeping everybody around the extra time to get another ambulance to the track the decision was made to postpone the race until this week.   That race was run early in the night with Mike Blowers of Waseca taking home his seventh feature win of the season.  Grinstead had problems in that race and after pitting in the middle of it ended up with just a fifth place finish.  At that point it did not look like she would be in line to create a piece of Track History on this night.   However in her heat event for the regular portion of the show she jumped from the outside of the front row and took the early lead.  Blowers, who has dominated the class this year, closed in on her and the two raced some tight laps before Briana claimed her first win of the season by taking the heat win.  She did it with some impressive lap times as well as she established a new fast lap for the season for the class as she turned a lap of 19.78 seconds for an average speed of 60.668 miles an hour.  That time was short of the Track Record for the class by about a quarter of a second, set by Ryan Henderson of Holmen Wisconsin last season.  Come Feature time Grinstead started inside row two with Blowers right behind her in row three.  On the drop of the green the two skirted around the front row and lined up first and second.   Blowers put the heat on as he kept trying to work to the inside of Briana.  On lap six Grinstead almost let it get away from her.  Coming through turn four she crossed herself up, got sideways and ended up cutting across the infield grass allowing Blowers to take over the lead.  She was able to hold on to second but Mike was opening a bit of a lead on her.   But that’s where another Lady, Lady Luck, stepped in to lend a hand.  As the back of the field was coming through that same turn behind her one of the cars spun and sat in the middle of the track bringing out a caution.  Going back to the last completed lap for the restart it put Briana back on the point.  On the drop of the green Blowers shot right to her outside coming out of turn four and the two crossed the line side by side.  As they went into turn one Grinstead was able to hold her line and shake Blowers off.  She than held him at bay for the final laps to take home the win and a share of history.  Gary Stahl of Kasson who finished third in the race followed her to victory lane pulling up along side her and offering her congratulations.   After climbing out of her car in Husqvarna Victory Lane the crowd that had not left early gave her a big ovation.  After posing with her trophy for the picture she received a big hug from her dad who had sprinted all the way from the pits to the infield  lifted her off the ground in celebration of the breakthrough win.   The congratulations continued in the pits as she stood outside her car in the tech line with her trophy sitting on top of the car.   Friends, drivers, fans and more were stopping by to shake her hand or give her a hug and tell her "Good Job" as her mom stood proudly by taking it all in.

In the Junior Hornet Divison Jake Bigelow of Hayfield claimed his second feature win of the season.  Matt Brooks of Austin lead the first lap of the race before Jacob Stark of Austin went to the outside of him in turn four to take over the top spot on lap two.  Stark was looking strong before a caution forced a restart.  Off that restart Jacob was slow getting up to speed and the field went inside and outside on him dropping him back to fourth.  Bigelow got the lead on that restart and lead the rest of the way for the win   Garitt Wytaske of Lansing came home in second ahead of Stark.   The classes two heat winners were Brandon Vogt of Rose Creek and Brooks who picked up his first win of the season.

In one of the most dominating performances of the night Jason Cummins of New Richland put an old fashioned whipping on the field of French's Repair and Fabrication USRA Modifieds.  Cummins started outside front row and had a full straightaway lead on the field in just four laps.   A caution on lap five and another on lap six took that lead away and set up an interesting restart.  Current Point Leader in the class at the track Mike Sorensen of Rochester, who has three feature wins at the track this year, had worked his way up to second just before the second caution.   The question was weather or not Mike had anything for Jason.  The answer was "No".   On the restart Jason rocketed away from the field getting that full straightaway lead back in just four laps again.  He continued to stretch the lead out as the race ran caution free the rest of the way and despite having to work traffic and lap some cars ended up winning by about half a lap.   Sorensen held on for second ahead of Josh Mattick of Austin who took home third after a spirited battle with Jacob Dahle of Morristown.   Heat winners in the class were Todd Scharkey of Kasson and Ben Mattick of Hayfield.

Josh Bartel of Kasson and Cole Queensland of Grand Meadow put on a good show in the Farm Boy BBQ WISSOTA Super Stock Main Event.  Bartel was not in his usual car on the night and it must have been to his liking as he scored his first feature win of the season at Lansing.   Josh started on the pole with Greg Mattick of Hayfield starting outside front row.  Mattick got the better jump on the drop of the green and lead the first two laps before Josh got a good run off the high side of turn four as they completed lap three to take over the lead.  Queensland meanwhile went three wide with Mattick and Ryan Siegle of Grand Meadow two laps later and came out of it in second place.  He immediately moved up on Josh and starting sticking his nose inside and outside looking for an opening.  Queenslands best chance came on lap twelve when he got inside of Josh actually getting his nose in front coming out of turn two, however as they went to turn three Bartel drove in deep and rode the cushion back around to the flag stand to retake the lead.  Over the final laps of the race Cole made several runs on Josh but it wasn't going to be as Bartel was locked in and kept hitting his marks to hold off the current point leader to score the win.  Siegle wound up in third.   Queensland did take the classes lone heat win.

Five cautions slowed the pace of the Power 96 WISSOTA Midwest Modified Feature event, three of them before a lap was even completed , but that didn't bother Bryan Hernandez of Blooming Prairie who lead flag to flag for his second feature win of the season.  Hernandez ended up with a sweep on the night as he also claimed a heat win.   Brandon Davis of Medford drove from row three up to a second place finish outdueling Albert Wytaske of Lansing for the spot.  Wytaske had the classes other heat win.

In the R and S Auto Rebuilders WISSOTA Street Stock class Ryan Goergen of Stacyville Iowa became the fourth driver on the night to claim there first feature win of the season.  Ryan started on the front row with Dan Holland of Brownsdale.  Goergen lead coming out of turn two on the first lap but it was Holland who had the lead at the end of the first lap.  Mechanical problems however ended Hollands night on lap six and Goergen inherited the lead back.  AJ Zvorak of Blooming Prairie who was tagged with an early caution spent much of the race coming back up through the field.  He eventually worked his way up to second and had a shot at Goergen over the final laps but Ryan was up to the challenge and secured the win.  Jesse Baer of Minnesota Lake was won of five drivers who ran second at one time or another during the race and took a shot at getting by Goergen but couldn't get it done either.  He eventually ended up third ahead of Jesse Stahl of Austin.  Stahl also was up to second for awhile and made a run or two at Ryan only to have the door closed on him.   Those three drivers who ran second through fourth at the end, along with Ryan and Holland before he fell out put on a good show for the crowd with some good hard racing and lots of swapping of positions.  The heat win for the class went to Holland.

The Pizza Ranch Pure Stock field of drivers did an outstanding job in there main event as well.  Twenty cars took the green flag for the fifteen lap feature and ran caution free with just one car finishing off the lead lap.  Samantha Stark of Austin made her bid to become the first Lady to take home a feature win as she lead the first six laps of the race before James Connors of Waseca moved by her.  Kylie Kath of Owatonna moved up to second moving Samantha back to third,  Kath stuck with Connors and on lap nine took over the lead spot.  Connors held onto second with Stacy Krohnberg of Walters taking third.  Stark ended up finishing sixth.   Heat winners on the night for the class were Jason Newkirk of Austin, Wayne Bellrichard of Albert Lea, and Brady Krohnberg of Walters.

Next weekend Chateau Raceway will kick off the Fourth of July Weekend with the first night of three weekend shows being billed as the "Freedom Series".  The series will run Friday Night, Saturday Night and Sunday Night at three different Southern Minnesota Tracks.   The Opener for the Series will be Friday Nights show in Lansing which be followed by Saturdays Nights show at Deer Creek Speedway in Racine, with the Dodge County Speedway in Kasson wrapping up the three night event.  Each track will be running there regular classes each night.  There will be a special series point fund for the three nights of racing with extra money on the line for the weekends top drivers.  There's also potential bonus money for any driver who can sweep three features on the weekend in there respective class.  If any one or more of next weekends show is rained out they will be made up the following weekend with those wins counting toward the "Freedom Series" three race point fund.   Along with there night of racing on Friday Night at Lansing the track will provide some special Fourth of July Weekend action.   Stuntman "Dr. Danger" will thrill the crowd at Intermission for the second year in a row with some daring events.  Last Year Dr Danger and Rocky Hardcore who is billed as "Master Fire the Human Torch" performed two stunts, "The Suicide Car Jump" and the "Human Torch Car Explosion", fans will have to show up to see what is in store for them this year.  Friday Nights action will be the first of two weekends of explosive excitement at the track as Chateau Raceway which will also present there annual "Flashing Thunder Fireworks" Spectacular the following week, Friday Night July 10th. Action gets underway every Friday Night at 7:30.
