"Freedom Series" Opens Friday Night at Chateau Raceway but
Rains Delay Conclusion until next Friday Night
by: Matthew Grage
LANSING, MN (July 3) - There was plenty of excitement for the tenth night of
AMSOIL Dirt Track Racing Series Action at Chateau Raceway in Lansing powered
by Miners Outdoor Power and Recreation of Blooming Prairie. To start with it
was night one of the three night "Freedom Series" being held over the Fourth
of July Weekend at Southeastern Minnesota's three race tracks. Chateau
Raceway, the Friday Night Track, teamed up with Deer Creek Speedway in
Racine, the areas Saturday Night Track, and the Dodge County Speedway, the
areas Sunday Night Track to put together a combined Holiday Weekend Series.
All three tracks ran there regular classes of cars with the four classes
that run all three tracks, WISSOTA Street Stocks - Midwest Modifieds - and
Super Stocks, along with the USRA Modifieds, running for combined weekend
points fund for each class, as well as the opportunity to cash in for extra
prize money if they could sweep three feature wins over the weekend. With
Lansing hosting night one that meant an excellent field of cars in those
four divisions as any driver who wanted a chance at the weekend sweep or a
shot at the points fund money for the top ten drivers in each division had
to start there weekend there. Chateau Raceways other classes, the two Hornet
classes and the Pure Stock class also had a good showing of cars for the
weekends race action. Added to that was yet another spectacular attraction
as the Track was scheduled to host "Dr. Danger the Stuntman" for the second
year in a row. However Dr. Danger who was suppose to thrill the crowd with
two spectacular stunts, "The RV Destruction", and "The Redneck Ring of Fire"
was injured in a stunt earlier in the week and had to cancel. He did line up
a replacement Stunt Man though, "Tricky Travelstead" of Louisville Kentucky.
Tricky has 33 years of daredevil stunts behind him and pulled off two
thrilling stunts in Dr Dangers place. First off he did "The Steel Wall
Crash" which consisted of three cars lined up on there rear bumpers about
twenty feet apart. He sped into the first one and continued right on through
the next two sending them flying over the car he was driving. The second
stunt was "The RV Destruction" where he hit a ramp and flew through one side
of the RV and out the other.
On the track there was even more daredevil antics as drivers were flying
three and even four wide at times looking for a big win. One of the moments
came before the races even started. In hot laps the track had its first
rollover of the season. Pure Stock Driver Dave White of Austin got high in
turn two and slide off the track and rolled one time ending up on his
wheels. It took crews a considerable amount of time to get him out of the
car so he could be transported to the hospital with unspecified injuries. By
the time the track was ready to race the show was already over fifteen
minutes late in getting started. Dave was apparently OK however as he was
discharged from the hospital and was seen back out at the Track later in the
night with just an ice bag on his neck. In fact he was hoping to get back in
his car to race but it was in no shape to run. The extra time that was lost
at the beginning of the night came into play at the end of the night
however. Light rain sprinkles which had greeted fans and drivers alike as
they were showing up for the races let up in time to get the show started.
Unfortunately six laps into the USRA Modified feature it started up again
and the race was red flagged and will not get completed until next Friday
night. Depending on the weekend weather for the other two shows, the USRA
Modified's may be the only class that will not have there Points Fund and
"Freedom Series Champion" crowned until next Friday night. Other rainouts or
delays over the weekend would also be made up at there respective tracks
next weekend as well so it is uncertain if the other three classses in the
Freedom Series will have Champions before next weekend either. Chateau
Raceways two "S and S Auto Salvage Hornet" Features there were not ran will
also have to be run next week.
In Racing action that was completed the "Power 96 WISSOTA Midwest Modified's"
put on a great show for the second week in a row. Jerry Young of Blooming
Prairie started on the outside of the front row and jumped straight to the
front on the drop of the green flag. Bryan Hernandez of Blooming Prairie
moved up to second on lap two with Brandon Davis of Medford and AJ Wiste of
Adams coming up behind the top two on lap four with everyone diving inside
and outside on each other lap after lap. Dan Wheeler of Columbia Heights had
problems in his heat and started in the last row of the eighteen car feature
but went right to work moving up to seventh by the time the first and only
caution of the race came out on lap five. Wheeler jumped three more spots on
the restart to pull up to fourth in just one more lap behind Young,
Hernandez and Davis. From there the four spent very little time single file.
It was Hernandez and Davis side by side for second one lap, the next lap it
was Hernandez and Young side by side for the lead, Wheeler bumper to bumper
with Hernadez for third and finally at the end it was Young and Davis side
by side for the win. The two spent the final hand full of laps locked up in
a tight side by side battle lap after lap with Young holding on for his
second feature win of the year. Hernadez held off Wheeler for third with
Albert Wytaske of Lansing coming home in fifth. The nights three heat wins
went to Greg Pfeifer Junior of Austin, Wytaske, and Wiste.
The "RS Auto Rebuilders WISSOTA Street Stock main event started with Rick
Lisowski of West Concord on the pole. Rick jumped right to the front with
Dan Holland of Brownsdale sliding out of row two up to second on the opening
lap. On lap two Holland went low out of turn two and swept into the lead.
Lisowski ended up getting schuffled back as AJ Zvorak of Blooming Prairie
and Jesse Stahl of Austin came forward to make it a three car battle for the
lead. Zvorak got the better of Stahl and ran side by side with Holland in
another thrilling finish with Dan coming home with his second feature win of
the year. Stahl ended up slipping back to fourth on the last lap as Jason
Barber of New Richland made a late charge to come home in third. Zvorak
picked up one of the classes two heat wins with Ryan Goergen of Stacyville
Iowa claiming the other one.
Cole Queensland of Grand Meadow continue to lead the way in the "Farm Boy
BBQ WISSOTA Super Stock" class. Queensland picked up his fourth feature win
of the year and his second sweep of the season after also taking home of the
two heat wins for the division. Queensland started back in row four. Brett
Dulas of Waseca lead the first two laps of the race before Greg Mattick of
Hayfield took over the lead spot on lap three. Mattick lead for just two
morel aps as Queensland went to the point on lap six and ended up walking on
the field as he won by almost half a track. The race was slowed by just one
caution which came after lap one, from there it was caution free with
Queensland using the long green flag run to stretch out a huge lead. Nick
Herrick of West Concord out dueled Jeff Brauer of Rochester for second with
Josh Bartel of Kasson and Mattick rounding out the top five. The other heat
winner on the night for the class was Brauer.
In "Pizza Ranch Pure Stock" action Wayne Nelson of Freeborn took over the
driving duties from his son Dylan for one night and put the car into "Husqvarna
Victory Lane" at the end of the night. Wayne started row five in the sixteen
car feature and picked his way to the front on lap eight where he stayed the
rest of the way. Sammie Fromm of Owatonna who had a heat win earlier in the
night put her machine in front at the start of the race and lead until a
flat tire ended her just as Nelson was passing her for the lead. Brandon
Shaner of Owatonna took second followed by Jason Newkirk of Austin. Also
grabbing heat wins on the night in the class were Matt Miller of Austin and
Kylie Kath of Owatonna.
The "French's Repair and Fabrication USRA" Modified's were paced to the
green flag by a front row of Greg Jensen of Albert Lea and Jason Cummins of
New Richland. Cummins came off the outside of the front row to grab the lead
going into turn one with Jensen falling in line second. Ben Mattick of
Hayfield jumped from row three up to third on the first lap getting around
Mike Sorensen of Rochester who started just ahead of him in row two. Corey
Dripps of Waterloo Iowa, also starting inside row behind Mattick and
Sorensen followed the two forward to get an early spot in the top five. With
Cummins sprinting away from the field and Jensen getting a nice edge over
third it left the other three to battle for third on back. There was some
good racing going on for the spot until the first caution came out as the
field was trying to work lap seven. By the time they were lined back up
light rain was starting and they made one attempt to try and restart the
race. However the track surface was to slick and cars started spinning right
away bringing the caution back out. Drivers made the decision not to try to
restart and again and the field went to the pits to see if the rain would
let up. After about a fifteen minute wait the decision was made to restart
the race next week with six laps completed in the schedule twenty-four lap
feature. The classes three heat winners on the night were Josh Reisch of
Luverne, Jay Poidinger of Sommerset Wisconsin, and Jacob Dahle of
Morristown.
The "S and S Auto Salvage Junior and Senior Hornet" Features will also be
run at the beginning of next weeks show. Each class had one heat event run
on the night with Brandon Vogt of Rose Creek taking the Junior Heat and Mike
Blowers of Waseca taking the Senior Heat.
Along with the extra feature races there will be more explosive action next
week at Chateau Raceway as well. The track will have its annual Fireworks
Extravaganza with "Flashing Thunder Fireworks". How the nights program with
the extra features run next week will determine at what time the Fireworks
show will be presented. The Track may add an intermission so they aren't
shot off to late. Fans will want to be early to get there favorite seats for
the nights racing and fireworks as an excellent crowd is always on hand for
the spectacular show. The Raceway has several other Kids friendly events in
the coming weeks with a Candy Drop, Christmas in July and Kids Rides in the
Stock Cars all coming up the weeks ahead. Race time is 7:30 every Friday
Night at Chateau Raceway, just five miles north of Austin.
