"Freedom Series concluded Friday Night at Chateau Raceway with plenty of Fireworks"
by: Myron Grage

LANSING, MN (July 10) - Lots of action and fireworks were packed into one night of AMSOIL Dirt Track Racing Series Action Friday Night at Chateau Raceway in Lansing, Powered by Miners Outdoor Power and Recreation of Blooming Prairie.  Along with the regular full show of racing action there was the business of running the three features from the previous week that were postponed because of the rain that cut that night short.  There was also the annual Chateau Flashing Thunder Fireworks Show which once again this year was almost fifteen minutes long and ended with the large explosion and the over forty foot high towers of fire erupting from the infield.  The heat from the finale could be felt from the flames of the finale in the grandstand which matched the heat from all the racing action on the night.

The first of the Make up Features to be run was the "Frenchs Repair and Fabrication USRA Modified" main event which was halted the week before six laps into the race.  There was a lot on the line as it was the finale for the "Freedom Series" which was a cooperative series between Chateau, and the two other area tracks Deer Creek in Racine, and the Dodge County Speedway in Kasson for last weekends Fourth of July Holiday.  Not only was it a Thousand-Dollar to win race there was the bonus money for the top drivers who competed in all three shows for the Fourth of July Weekend with the top prize money for that being another cool Thousand Dollars.  Jason Cummins of New Richland was sitting in prime position to take home the big money.   Jason won one feature last weekend and took fourth in the other to lead the points, and was restarting as the leader of the finale looking at a possible Two Thousand dollar run.  He wasted no time in pulling out to a lead leaving Greg Jensen of Albert Lea and Ben Mattick of Hayfield to battle for second.  Mattick got the better of the battle and settled into second but Cummins was way out in front by the time he took control of the position.  A late caution with three to go tightened the field up one more time but Jason was up to the challenge and pulled away from Ben to score his second feature win of the season at Lansing and secure a big pay day as he took home the "Freedom Series" title to take home both of the big checks.  Jensen came home in third ahead of Corey Dirpps of Waterloo Iowa and Jacob Dahle of Morristown.   Doug Hillson of Blooming Prairie finished sixth, good enough to wrap up second place in the "Freedom Series" which was good for a nice bonus check of eight-hundred dollars, with Corey Dripps taking third in the series.  The other drivers who took home the bonus money for the "Freedom Series" were Joel Alberts of Mantorville, Mike Sorensen of Rochester, Josh Reisch of Luverne, Jay Poidinger of Sommerset Wisconsin, Joe Wernecke of Dodge Center and Bobby Swanson of Kasson.  Drivers needed to compete in all three shows for the series to cash and just nine filled that requirement.

After Cummins win he along with the other "Freedom Series" Champions who had already been crowned last weekend were brought out on to the track to be recognized.  Dan Holland of Brownsdale took the WISSOTA Street Stock top prize money for the series after scoring two feature win and a second place finish last weekend.  Bryan Hernadez of Blooming Prairie was top man in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified portion of the Series after finishes last weekend of first, second and third.   In the WISSOTA Super Stock class it was Cole Queensland of Grand Meadow who dominated with three feature wins last week to also pick up the extra bonus money that was offered for a any driver who could sweep the weekends features.  That bonus money was paid out by Chimney Sweeps of Rochester. Only classes that run all three tracks were in the "Freedom Series" Promotion.  The closest points battle was in the Midwest Modifieds where just four point separated the top three of Hernandez, Brandon Davis of Medford and Albert Wytaske of Lansing.

In there regular scheduled feature the excitement kept on coming for the USRA Modifieds.  Tyler Clark of Rochester started on the pole and took the early lead with Joel Alberts dropping in line second ahead of Ben Mattick and Josh Mattick.  Alberts worked his was around Clark for the lead on lap three before the only caution of the race came out for a couple cars that tangled near the back of the field.  Off the restart Alberts maintained his lead while Josh Mattick jumped to second ahead of Ben with Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie and Jason Cummins making there way into the top five.  Those two had started deep in the field with Myer starting in row four and Cummins way back in row six.  Things went sour for Alberts on lap six as he slipped all the way back to fourth as Ben Mattick took over the lead ahead of Josh and Cummins who came ahead for third.  Jason went to second on lap ten and set his sights on Ben.  Cummins had been running a high line for much of the race to pick up positions but he went to high on lap thirteen and backslid several spots giving over second place to Myer.  While Myer tried to close in on Ben, Josh Mattick was mounting a charge back through the field and closed in on Tommy and slipped by him for second with just five laps to go.  It was now his turn to try to reel in his brother but it wasn't going to happen as Mattick family bragging rights for the night went to Ben who picked up his first feature win of the season at Lansing.  It also gave him a sweep on the night as he also picked up a win in his heat earlier in the evening.  Cummins came back for third ahead of a late charging Corey Dripps with fifth going to Alberts.  Myer meanwhile spun on the final lap and ended up falling all the way back to a fourteenth place finish.  The classes other heat wins went to Dripps and Cummins.

In the make up "S and S Auto Salvage Hornet Features Mike Blowers of Waseca and Jake Bigelow of Hayfield set the stages for big nights for them.  Bigelow came up with a late pass of Brandon Vogt of Rose Creek to take the Junior Hornet make up feature while Blowers lead flag to flag to claim the Senior Hornet make up Feature ahead of Briana Grinstead of Austin.  The two kept on going all night long as they came back and took home heat wins and than followed those up with two more feature wins.  Blowers jumped from row four to the lead in one lap on his way to claiming his second Senior feature win on the night while Bigelow had to wait until late again to get to the front in the nights scheduled Junior feature.  Jacob Stark of Austin lead much of the Junior Feature until Bigelow gave him a little bump in turn three as they were working around to the white flag.  Stark ended up getting moved up the hill and with the two coming through turn four to the white flag with Bigelow rubbing off the inside of him Stark fell back to second.  Bigelow than pulled away to the win.  Gary Stahl of Kasson also picked up a heat win on the night as the Senior Division ran two heats.

The"Pizza Ranch Pure Stock" feature came down to the final lap with Kylie Kath of Owatonna sliding by Brandon Shaner of Owatonna down the back straightaway to pick up his fourth feature win of the year.  He also took home a heat win for his third sweep of the season.  Jason Newkirk of Austin finished third ahead of Dylan Nelson of Freeborn and Adam Godeke of Hollandale.  Jake Siemers who lead the first lap of the feature also took home a heat win.  His feature was cut short when he was involved in one of the early cautions in the race and had his race cut short.

Bringing out "The Broom" and "Sweeping Up" was a common theme on the night as all but one class had drivers take home both heat and feature wins on the night.  The only class where drivers divided up the wins was in the "Farm Boy BBQ WISSOTA Super Stock" Class.  Cole Queensland took home the heat win but it was Ryan Sigle of Grand Meadow who ran off and hid to take the caution free feature event.   Greg Mattick of Hayfield and Siegle started on the front row for the feature.  Mattick jumped to the early lead with Josh Bartel of Kasson coming out of row two to slide by Siegle to move into second on lap one.  However on lap two Siegle swept around both of them to take the lead and set sail in clean air.  Mattick ended up getting shuffled back to fifth with Jeff Brauer of Rochester and Queensland sliding up to third and fourth.  Brauer drew along side Bartel for third in a tight three way battle for the position with three laps remaining.  Jeff finished the past and left Josh and Cole to battle it out for third.  And it was a battle, side by side all the way to the checkers with the two making contact and Queensland getting into the wall as they crossed the line.  Cole got the spot and Bartel ended up getting the black flag as officials felt he was to aggressive in trying to maintain the spot.  Mattick ended up fourth ahead of Brett Dulas of Waseca.

AJ Zvorak of Blooming Prairie ended up top dog on the night in the "RS Auto Rebuilders WISSOTA Street Stock" class.  AJ along with Dan Holland took home heat wins and were both looking for the sweep at feature time.  Holland appeared to be on his way to the win but just past halfway with a big lead over Zvorak mechanical problems sent him spinning out of turn two. Dan pulled the car ahead into the infield and the race continued with out him and with AJ out on point.   With Holland pulling out of the way there was no caution and the race ran green the rest of the way to the checkers with Zvorak picking up his third feature at Chateau this year and sweeping the night for the second time this season.  Jesse Stahl of Austin had a nice run to come home second ahead of Tyler Peterson of Hollandale.  Jesse Baer of Minnesota Lake who started tail end came home in fourth ahead of Brent Holland of Glenville.

The "Power 96 WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds" put on another great show.   Eric Condit of Austin held the early lead in the feature after starting on the pole.  Troy Dahle of Morristown ran second with AJ Wiste of Adams running third ahead of Brandon Davis and Dan Wheeler of Columbia Heights.  The race featured two, three and even four wide battles around the track where it didn't look like there was enough room to get that many cars spread out.  Dahle and Wiste had a trough couple laps and back slid a few spots with Wheeler moving ahead for second on lap three.  Wiste came right back two laps later and he and Wheeler went side by side for several laps while at the same time gaining ground on the leader Condit who had opened up a nice advantage.  As the two closed in on Eric it was Wiste who kind of used the leader as a pick and shook off Dan and went to the lead just under halfway through the race.  A midrace caution regrouped the field and off the restart a couple other drivers made there presence known again.  Brandon Davis jumped all the way up to second with Albert Wytaske and Bryan Hernadez moving up as well with Wheeler sliding back to fifth.   The top five challenged each other back and forth over the final laps but even a late caution which set up a three lap shootout didn't change the final running order much with Wiste getting the win over , Davis, Hernandez, and Wytaske.  Jason Born of Medford made a late charge taking fifth away from Wheeler at the end.

More exciting racing action is on top for next Friday night with race time set for 7:30.  Extra special treat for the kids next week will be a "Candy Drop" at intermission where the youngsters will get a chance to get there fists full of as much sweetness as they can grab
