SPRING VALLEY, MN (July 18) - A very cool July day saw the IRA Sprint Cars
pull into town for their annual race along with the WISSOTA Midwest
Modifieds and the USRA Modifieds. Travis Whitney sets new track record in
qualifying at 11.927. 15-cars were under the old track record in time
trials.
Jerry Young paced the field to the start of the Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA
Midwest Modified feature and led the pack out of turn two with a three wide
scramble for third behind him. David Stevens sat firmly in second early with
AJ Wiste, Brandon Davis and Travis Krause racing for third as the first
caution fo the event flew. On the restart Young again led with Stevens and
Wiste racing hard for second. On the next lap Brandon Davis jumped up to the
high side and found the fast lane was above the cushion and flew by the
battle taking over the third spot. as another caution flew with fourteen to
go. Young again led with Davis and Stevens racing for second with Davis
taking the spot and on the next lap he pulled alongside of Young for the
lead. Davis took the lead and with ten to go Young slowed on the speedway
with mechanical issues bringing out another caution. Davis led on the
restart with Krause taking over the second spot. Bryan Hernandez worked past
Stevens for the fourth spot behind Wiste. At the finish it was Davis with
the win, Krause and Wiste in the top three. Heat race wins went to Young,
Davis and Boumeester
The 30-lap $2500 to win IRA Sprint Car feature was up next. The track crew
went to work reworking the track lightly before the feature and it paid off
with a lightning quick track with multiple grooves and a small cushion for
executing the slide jobs as the race wore on. Scott Biertzer eld from teh
drop of the green with John Haeni in second receiving pressure from Billy
Balog. A caution with three down set up another restart with Biertzer
leading the way. Steve Meyer and Haeni were swapping lines and slide jobs
trying to determine third with Meyer getting the upper hand two laps later.
Balog was quick and slowly started to gain on Biertzer up front. Another
caution with nine down saw six cars involved and after removing a few of
them from the field the race went green until almost completing the full
thirty laps. On the restart Biertzer led with Balog in second. Jake Peters
moved into third followed by Travis Whitney who started tenth on the field
and was looking to win another feature event at the speedway as he entered
the event with the other two IRA titles at the speedway. Biertzner was
passed by Balog on lap thirteen while Peters slipped allowing Whitney into
third. Danny Goeden was also flying after starting eighteenth he was now in
the fifth spot. With seventeen down Balog was pulling away qucily from the
field as he entered lapped traffic. five laps later Whitney worked past
Biertzner for the second spot with Peters following through into third. The
final cuation flew with three laps left and under caution Peters pulled into
the pit area. Balog cruised home with the win, Whitney in second and Goeden
in thrid.
The final feature of the night was the EZ Fabricating USRA Modified feature
with Kelly Shryock jumping out to the early lead. Zack VanderBeek moved
under pat Grahm to take over second with Grahm fighting back up top and
retaking the spot on lap two. Jason Cummins raced with VanderBeek for third
with Tim Donlinger right behind them in fifth. With six completed Donlinger
and Cummins moved into a race wtih Grahm for second. Cummins took second on
lap seven while Donlinger completed the move into third on lap eigth. With
eleven laps remaining in the event Cummins had made up the distance to
Shryock and moved low to make a pass for the lead just as the caution flew.
ON the restart Shryock moved into Cummins low line and keeping his lead.
