Great Action At Chateau Raceway As Four of Seven Classes Run Caution Free Features
by: Matthew Grage

LANSING, MN (July 24) - Despite the threat of rain a good field of cars was on hand for a Friday Night of "AMSOIL Dirt Track Racing Series Action" at Chateau Raceway "Powered By Miners Outdoor Power And Recreation". There was plenty of excitement to go around. Along with some exciting racing action there was the special appearance of the "Budweiser Clydesdales" full hitch team sponsored by Schott Distributing. The team did a parade lap before the national anthem to give the crowd a good luck at the team in action. There was also the special "Christmas in July" night for the kids with Santa Claus making a visit to the track to pass out some goodies for the youngsters.

On the track the words for the night were "Caution Free" with four of the seven features running clean and the other three combining for just six yellows as the drivers passed out plenty of goodies for all the fans with some exciting action. The excitement started with the very first feature of the night, the "Pizza Ranch Pure Stock" main event. James Weber of Austin started on the pole and lead the first lap. On lap two however he got the car sideways in the middle of turn two and caught several cars sending four cars out of the race including himself. Adam Godeke of Hollandale inherited the lead for the restart and held the top spot until a second caution on lap four. Off that restart Ryan Henderson of Holmen Wisconsin shot to the outside of Godeke and took over the lead. However two laps later he bobbled in turn two and Adam retook the lead which he held for just a lap and a half until he spun into the infield with a flat tire. Henderson found himself back in the lead in a tight battle with Dustin Sletten of Owatonna and Jason Newkirk of Austin. One more caution slowed the field with five laps to go. Ryan was able to get a good jump on the drop of the green while Sletten and Newkirk battled side by side for second behind him. Henderson drove off for his second feature win of the season while Newkirk came up with a late pass of Sletten for second. Brady Krohnberg came all the way from row eight for a fourth place finish ahead of Sammie Fromm of Owatonna. Newkirks solid run improved his points lead over Kylie Kath of Owatonna from two to thirteen. Kath along with Kevin Vogt of Rose Creek, and Brandon Shaner of Owatonna took home the classes three heat wins and ironically all were knocked out of the feature by that first caution of the race.

Next up was the first of the nights four caution free feature races. The "RS Auto Rebuilders WISSOTA Street Stocks" were lead early by Rick Lisowski of West Concord. Rick was caught and passed by AJ Zvorak of Blooming Prairie on lap five. Zvorak worked from row three up to second rather quickly and made his pass for the lead on lap five when Lisowski slid up high in turn two opening the door on the bottom of the track. Tyler Peterson of Hollandale who picked up his first win of the season in the classes heat race came home third followed by Jesse Stahl of Austin and Jesse Baer of Minnesota Lake. Zvoraks night put his lead in the run for the Track Points Championship to fifty-nine over Stahl. He could actually take a night off at this point and still be in first place when he returned.

Two small caution did little to slow the pace of the "Power 96 WISSOTA Midwest Modified Feature. Dave Stevens of Albert Lea started outside the front row and grabbed the early lead. A small mistake on lap three opened the door for Joe Horgdahl of Kasson to take over the lead. Bryan Hernandez of Blooming Prairie followed him forward and moved into second. A lap later Bryan found room on the bottom of turn three to dip under Joe and take over the lead for himself. Brandon Davis of Medford meanwhile working out of row four was picking off cars lap after lap and moved up to second on lap seven. Dan Wheeler of Columbia Heights had a rough start to the race. After starting in row two he slipped completely out of the top five on the first lap. He patiently worked his way back up to third on lap eight and he and Davis proceeded to put on a good show for the rest of the race battling for second. The two ran several laps side by side and off one of the late restarts Wheeler moved up to second. The two stayed tight to the back bumper of Hernandez putting on a good three car battle for the top three spots. Wheeler was running the outside line and had a good run down the front straightaway and cleared Davis only to have to back off in the middle of turn one when he charged to hard and ended up right up to the back bumper of Hernandez. Just lifting for that instant allowed Davis to slide back by for second. Hernandez went on to score his fourth feature win of the season. Davis and Wheeler were followed to the checkers by AJ Wiste of Adams and Greg Pfeifer JR of Austin. Jerry Young of Blooming Prairie and Davis took the classes heat wins. Despite his good night Hernandez actually lost ground to Davis in a close points race. He now sits sixteen markers back.

The second of the caution free features on the night belonged to the "Farm Boy BBQ WISSOTA Super Stocks." Mark Wytaske of Austin took the lead at the drop of the green flag off the pole. Jeff Brauer of Rochester working out of row two stayed tight behind him looking for an opening. That opening came on lap three when Mark slide up the hill just a bit in turn two on lap three. That opened the door for Brauer to take over the lead. Jeff went on to walk away from the field winning by a full straightaway. Cole Queensland of Grand Meadow made a last lap pass of Ryan Siegle of Grand Meadow to take second while Wytaske ended up in fourth ahead of Josh Bartel of Kasson. Brauer ended up with a sweep on the night after also taking home the classes lone heat win. Jeffs feature win was his third of the season and pulled him within thirteen points of Queensland after trailing him by seventeen entering the night in another of the very close points races.

In the "Frenchs Repair and Fabrication USRA Modified" feature the caution flag came out just one time. Doug Hillson of Blooming Prairie lead the field around on lap one in a very tight side by side battle three rows deep. On lap two Ben Mattick of Hayfield, who was running fourth in the battle, ended up sideways in the middle of turn two. Three cars ended up getting collected in the mess with Mattick and Joel Alberts of Kasson getting the worse of it as there night was ended in the incident. Off the restart Todd Scharkey of Kasson who was running fifth after the first lap got a great jump off the drop of the green and jumped all the way to second behind Hillson. Todd didn't stay behind him long as he pulled beside him a lap later and the two crossed the stripe side by side with Scharkey ahead by a nose.
He completed the pass on the next lap and proceeded to walk away from the field and score his first feature win of the season. Scharkey just moved into his new Hughes Chassis three weeks ago and after a rough first night in the car he has now posted a second place and first place finish in the car in the past two week at Lansing. Josh Mattick of Austin, who started in row five of the feature, put on a nice show as he picked his way up through the field catching Hillson just before the halfway mark of the race. The two put on a good show as they battled for second. The two swapped the spot a few times before Mattick took control of it. Doug held on for third ahead of Tyler Clark of Rochester and Josh Reisch of Luverne. The classes heat winnners were Josh Mattick and Shawn Peterson of Cottage Grove. It was Petersons first win of the season at Chateau. Meanwhile Hillsons third place run and the tough night for Ben Mattick has Doug now sitting good in the classes points race as he too is up enough that if he was to miss a night he would still be leading that division.

The "S and S Auto Salvage Hornets" ended the night with a pair of caution free features. In the Junior Division Jacob Stark of Austin broke through with his first Chateau Feature win. Stark picked up his first win of the season in his heat earlier in the night and backed it up with a solid run in scoring the feature win as well for a sweep on the night. Stark started outside of row two and split the two cars in the front row on the first lap as he went straight to the front and never looked back in route to the win. Brandon Vogt of Rose Creek started back in row three and worked his way up to second passing Garitt Wytaske of Lansing for second. Casey Trom of Zumbrota came home fourth followed by Samantha Zipse of Northwood Iowa. Stark, despite having not won a race before Friday, had lead the points the last several weeks and increased his points lead in a very tight race to eleven points over Vogt. In the Senior Division Mike Blowers of Waseca posted his eleventh feature win of the season and his tenth sweep as he put together two more dominating runs. Michael Wytaske of Lansing came home second in the main event followed by a trio of Austin drivers, Jamie Tapp, Kaitlyn Stark, and Paul Kroneman. Blowers points lead is so out of control he is about to the point where he could take two weeks off and not fall from the top spot. Anything can happen but right now three of the seven Track Championships are looking pretty one sided.

Next Friday night the track will have a special treat for the youngsters who get out there early. Shortly after 7:00 the drivers will bring there cars out onto the track and take turns giving the kids rides around the track. It should be an exciting time for the kids. Parents are encouraged to get the children out there early so they can participate in the fun. Race time will follow at 7:30.
