Drivers In National Points Races Do Well Friday Night At
Chateau Raceway
by Matthew Grage
LANSING, MN (July 31) - It was a perfect sunny night at the start of AMSOIL
Dirt Track Racing action Friday Night at Chateau Raceway in Lansing, powered
by Miners Outdoor Power and Recreation. Shortly after the pits were thinned
out however some light showers hit some folks as they were leaving the track
as Mother Nature held off just long enough to allow the action to be
completed. Several of the regular drivers at Chateau are running in some
tight National Points Races and three of them helped there causes during the
night.
In the "RS Auto Rebuilders WISSOTA Street Stock Class" AJ Zvorak of Blooming
Prairie was sitting fifth in the National WISSOTA Points Race for the class.
Needing to make up ground he did it with a big night pulling off a sweep
taking home the heat and feature win for the class. It took him four laps to
get to the front from row two in his heat but just one lap to get to the
front from row three in the feature. AJ started inside row three in the main
event and on the drop of the green stayed tight to the bottom. He went three
wide with the field through turn two and shot the bottom of the track down
the back straight away right to the lead heading into turn three. He never
looked back as the race went caution free and he drove off to his sixth
feature win of the season at Lansing and his third sweep. Jesse Baer of
Minnesota Lake out dueled Jesse Stahl of Austin for second while Tyler
Peterson of Hollandale came up late to take fourth from Jason Barber of New
Richland.
"Power 96 WISSOTA Midwest Modified" driver Brandon Davis of Medford sat
third entering the night in the National WISSOTA Points Race. Brandon has
been racking up feature wins and sweeps throughout the region this summer
but had just one feature win on his Lansing resume for the year entering the
night, and no sweeps. That changed on Friday night as Davis put together a
pair of wins. In his heat it took him until the last lap to work by Dave
Stevens of Albert Lea for the win. In the feature though he caught a bit of
a break on the initial start that helped him get to the front a bit quicker.
Davis was scheduled to start in row four but a first lap caution took out
some cars and Brandon on the restart ended up taking the green from outside
of row two. Beau Lammers of Owatonna grabbed the lead off the second start
of the race with Davis pulling up to second. On lap two Brandon went to the
bottom of the track out of turn four and shot to the front and sailed off to
his second feature win of the year at Chateau and capped his sweep. He
survived three more restarts in the caution plagued race to put together the
solid night. Greg Pfeifer JR of Austin came home second followed by Stevens,
Lammers, and Billy Steinberg of Kasson. Also taking home a heat win in the
class was AJ Wiste of Adams. Wiste had a fast car on the night but that all
went away on lap four of the feature when his engine went up in smoke
spreading oil from the middle of turns one and two all the way through turn
three.
Another of the Lansing Regulars vying for a shot at a National WISSOTA
Points Title is "Farm Boy BBQ WISSOTA Super Stock" Driver Cole Queensland of
Grand Meadow. Cole started the weekend third in the National Points Race.
Queensland mustered just a second place finish in his heat as he followed
Jeff Brauer of Rochester to the checkers. Brauer sits sixth himself in the
National Points Battle. In the Feature however Cole drove a patient race. On
the drop of the green he fell in line second behind Brett Dulas of Waseca.
Brett was doing a good job holding his line not giving Cole much room to try
and put a move on him. Queensland stayed patient waiting for his chance
which came on lap twelve. Cole got along side Dulas coming to the line to
complete lap twelve and as they stayed paired up into turns one and two
Brett pushed up a bit high in two. Queensland stayed glued to the bottom and
rocketed off the turn pulling ahead of him and driving off to the win. It
was Queensland fifth feature win at Chateau this season. Brauer came home in
third ahead of Mark Wytaske of Austin and Josh Bartel of Kasson.
Not surprisingly all three drivers lead in their separate Track Points
Standings at Lansing heading into August.
"French's Repair and Fabrication USRA Modifieds" put on quite a show for the
first half of their feature. Ben Mattick of Hayfield, Shawn Peterson of
Cottage Grove, and Dustin Stienbrink of Austin went three wide off the drop
of the green for the lead. Out of turn two the trio sorted out with Mattick
taking the point and Peterson falling in line second. Peterson pulled back
up on the outside of Mattick on lap three and the pair ran that way for the
next four laps swapping the spot numerous times as they circled the track.
On laps four and five it was Shawn with the advantage by a nose at the line.
On lap six Mattick put his nose to the line first to get the lead back. On
lap seven down the back straight away out of turn two Mattick got a good
push and pulled back in front of Peterson clearing him and they completed
the next lap nose to tail. Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie moved his way up
to third behind the pair and was looking to make it a three way battle for
the lead when he blew a right rear tire and popped a spring out onto the
track bringing out a caution on lap sixteen. Off the restart Mattick
maintained his lead over Peterson but it was another driver who drew some
attention making a big move. Wally Bustad of Austin popped through the
middle of the field and shot all the up to third off the restart. The race
ran caution free the rest of the way with Mattick stretching out his lead
and Bustad closing it up on Peterson to challenge for second. Shawn held
onto the spot with Wally coming home third ahead of Doug Hillson of Blooming
Prairie and Brian Shaw of Brownsdale. The classes other heat win went to
Greg Jensen of Albert Lea who scored his first checkered flag of the season.
In "S and S Auto Salvage Hornet" Racing action Mike Blowers scored another
pair of wins in the Senior Division. Blowers now has eleven sweeps on the
year to go along with twelve feature wins. Paul Kroneman of Austin who ended
up second lead the feature except for the final two laps. Paul did all he
could to hold Mike off but Blowers got a run up on the outside of him with
two to go and finished off the pass for the lead out of turn two. Terry
Blowers of Waseca came home third followed by Gary Stahl of Kasson and
Michael Wytaske of Lansing. The Junior Division big winner on the night was
Jake Bigelow of Hayfield. Bigelow took home the feature win ahead of Brandon
Vogt of Rose Creek. Garitt Wytaske of Lansing, Cole Lonergan of Dexter, and
Charlie Steinberg of Kasson rounded out the top five.
"Pizza Ranch Pure Stocks" were ruled on the night by Kylie Kath of Owatonna
who put together his fourth sweep of the season with a pair of wins. His
feature win was his fifth of the season at Chateau. Brandon Shaner of
Owatonna came home second followed by Stacy Krohnberg of Walters, Kevin Vogt
of Rose Creek, and Samantha Stark of Austin. Other heat winners for the
class were Ryan Henderson of Holmen Wisconsin and Shaner.
The drivers did a great job before the races providing rides in there cars
for all the kids in attendance. Next week the track will have "Trick or
Treat" Night for the kids. There will not only be Trick of Treating for all
the kids but any youngsters who show up in costume will be admitted free.
Race time is 7:30 at Chateau Raceway, just five miles north of Austin in
Lansing.
