Davis Ties Krause for Single Season Wins at the CREEK
by Bill Nelson
SPRING VALLEY, MN (August 1) - A slightly cool afternoon brought out the
fans to the second annual Popapalooza Concert for a Cure and racing event.
With an afternoon full of Texas holdem, wine tasting and music the racing
action took the center stage. First up were the Jim's AutoCare WISSOTA
Street Stocks with Jimmy Patzner taking control of the racing on lap two
with Chuck Nerland and Dan Bork side by side for second. With six completed
the yellow waved. On the restart Patzner jumped back out front with Nerland
and Bork continuing their race for second. Bork took the spot on the next
lap with Cory Crapser moving into third shortly after. With nine to go
Crapser worked into second and Danny Hanson followed through into third.
Crapser quickly worked outside of Patzner for the lead with Hanson following
through into second on the next laps. Bork and AJ Zvorak then raced for
fourth behind Patzner and continued their race through to the checkers with
Hanson gaining on Crapser but not able to make a pass for the win. Crapser,
Hanson and Patzner rounded out the top three with Zvorak getting around Bork
for fourth and fifth. Bork and Troy Voth were heat race winners.
After a complete restart the Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds
go the first lap in with Bob Bunne jumping out to the early lead with a
three wide battle for second early on. Mike Paulson took over the second
spot. A caution flew with four down and on the restart Paulson got the jump
on Bunne and took over the lead. Brandon Davis worked into third and with
fifteen to go started to pressure Paulson for the lead. Davis took over the
lead with twelve to go and started to pull away from the field. Chris
Gilbertson moved into third with ten to go as he tried to track down Paulson
for second. With seven to go the top three had distanced themselves from the
field but that was negated as the caution flew with six to go. Davis again
led from the start with Paulson and Gilbertson racing for second. Paulson
still held strong as Jared Boumeester now worked up to race with Gilbertson
for third. Boumeester took it with three to go and took over second on the
last lap. Travis Krause worked into fourth at the line as he worked past
Gilbertson for that spot. The feature win was Davis's 10th of the season at
the speedway tying the record set by Travis Krause a few years ago, and with
a handful of races left this season Davis may very well set a new record.
Heat races were won by Jason Born, Shaun Walski and Davis.
The US ARMY WISSOTA Super Stocks were on the track next with Michael Hofer
jumping out to the early lead and Jeff Brauer in second. With one completed
Hofer lost the handle on his mount getting tagged by Brauer causing heavy
sheet metal damage to his car and then back up t he track in the path of
Chris Groth. IT was unfortunate for Groth to be there as he tried to start
his first feature event of the season at the speedway. The hard charging
driver has spent most of the season recovering from a snowmobile accident
and it was good to see him back on the track even if it was short lived. On
the restart Brauer leads with Cole Queensland sliding up in front of Kevin
Hager for the second spot. Brett Dulas then challenged Hager for the third
spot over the remaining fifteen laps of the race. With twelve to go
Queensland drove in hard and came out low in two to pull alongside of Brauer
going into three. Queensland drove it in hard and came out of four with the
lead. The top two stretched out their advantage over the third place car as
they ran to the checkers. Hofer won the lone heat race.
Bobby Swanson blasted around the high side of the speedway to take the lead
at the drop of the green with Joe Wernecke and Nate Wasmund racing side by
side for second. With three down Wasmund moved into second. Shawn Peterson,
Jay Ihrke and Jason Cummins were three wide for sixth as Mike Sorensen moved
past Bob Timm for fourth and then Wernecke for third. With nineteen to go
Wasmund and Swanson were side by side for the lead with Wasmund gaining
control on the next lap. Cummins started working on Sorensen for third and
took the spot with fifteen to go but on the next lap Cummins pushed up in
four allowing Sorensen back into third while Ihrke closed up on the bumper
of Cummins. A restart with nine to go bunched the field back up on Wasmunds
bumper, with Sorensen working into second. Bob Timm worked under Cummins for
fifth while Ihrke and Swanson ran side by side for third. With four to go
the gloves were off and Sorensen took the lead in two but Wasmund drove back
into the lead out of four as Ihrke and Swanson raced for third with Timm
right behind them. ON the last lap Wasmund pushed up allowing Sorensen to
move past for the lead and the win while Timm moved under the other battle
to take over third. Cummins, Sorensen and Swanson were heat race winners.
