Dog Days of Summer Greet Race Fans and Drivers at Chateau
Raceway Friday Night
BY: Matthew Grage
LANSING, MN (August 14) - It was a hot muggy night for week fifteen of
AMSOIL Dirt Track Racing Series Action at Chateau Raceway in Lansing,
Powered by Miners Outdoor Power and Recreation. It was also a night of
domination as five of the seven classes run saw drivers pull off sweeps.
Leading the way was Adam Godeke of Hollandale in the "Pizza Ranch Pure
Stock" Class. Adam had been winless on the season entering the night and he
turned that around in a big fashion as he lead flag to flag in both his heat
and the feature for his first trips to Victory Lane. Adams took advantage of
front row starting spots in both races to get the quick lead but he felt the
heat all the way to the end in both races. Kylie Kath of Owatonna who is
leading the points chase for the class chased him all the way to the
checkers in both races while trying to find a way to pass him. Tony Shaner
of Owatonna was third in the feature followed by Ryan Henderson of Holmen
Wisconsin and Sammie Fromm of Owatonna. It was a nice run by Henderson as he
started dead last in the main event in row eight and picked his way all the
way up to a solid top five finish. The classes other heat winner was Jason
Newkirk of Austin.
The Second driver to pull out the broom on the night was Ross Spitzer of
Dodge Center in the "RS Auto Rebuilders WISSOTA Street Stock" Class.
Spitzer, who ran in the Pure Stock class the last few years entered the
night with a pair of heat wins under his belt in his rookie season but was
still looking for his break through big win. Ross started his night by
making a mid race pass for the lead in claiming his heat win. In the feature
he lined up outside front row and jumped to the point followed by Ryan
Goergen of Stacyville Iowa. Ryan stayed close for the early laps before
Spitzer started to stretch out his advantage. The race had two cautions
before the first lap was completed but once the field completed a lap they
kept it green the entire distance enabling Ross to maintain his lead all the
way to the end. Kyle King of Hastings came home third ahead of Jason Barber
of New Richland and Brent Holland of Glenville. The classes other heat win
went to Dan Holland of Brownsdale who had problems in one of the early
cautions and fell out of the race right away. Current point leader in the
class at the track AJ Zvorak of Blooming Praire was gone for the night but
still holds the lead. He entered the night with a sixty-four point lead so
missing the night was not going to cost him the lead, but it did allow Jesse
Stahl of Austin to get back with in twenty-eight points of him.
Dan Wheeler of Columbia Heights kept the "Broom" out for the night in the
third feature of the night as he backed up his heat win by taking home his
third feature win of the season at the track in the "Power 96 WISSOTA
Midwest Modified" Class. It was the second time this year that he pulled off
the double win night. Dan rocketed out of the second row on the drop of the
green in the feature and went straight to the front. Bryan Hernandez of
Blooming Prairie and AJ Wiste of Adams kept the pressure on Wheeler through
three restarts during the course of the race but as hard as they had to race
each other it left little time at the end of the race to pressure Dan. The
two swapped spots several times at about the midpoint of the race. With just
a handful of laps to go Hernandez took control of the spot and made a late
run at Wheeler but Dan was up to the challenge to claim the win. Wiste took
third followed by Jerry Young of Blooming Prairie and Jason Born of Medford.
Brandon Davis of Medford lost his lead in the tightly contested points race
for the class by missing the nights show. Hernadez with his solid night
turned a twenty-eight point deficit into a thirteen point lead of Wiste.
Davis fell back to third fifteen points back. Both Davis and Zvorak in the
Street Stock class had traveled out of the area last week when Lansing was
rained out. Unfortunately where they went received rain during the show and
never had there features run. They opted to travel again this week to race
the make up features and regular shows out of the area. Zvorak could afford
to take the hit with his big lead but Davis is now in a tough spot with just
two nights of points racing left to decide the 2009 Track Champions.
The broom was pulled out again in feature number four on the night as Cole
Queensland of Grand Meadow dominated the "Farm Boy BBQ WISSOTA Super Stock"
class for his sixth feature win and third sweep of the season. Cole lead
flag to flag for the classes only heat win but had to do a little work for
the feature win. Brett Dulas of Waseca grabbed the early lead and was doing
a good job of keeping Cole behind him until just before the halfway point of
the race when he pushed high in turn four and opened the bottom line.
Queensland dropped straight to the bottom taking advantage of the open line
to go to the front and race away from the field for the win. Jeff Bauer of
Rochester, who is trying to catch Cole in the points race worked his way
from row three up to a runnerup finish. Dulas came home third ahead of Mark
Wytaske of Austin and Josh Bartel of Kasson.
The track was two laps away from having five straight sweeps in the "Frenchs
Repair and Fabrication USRA Modified" Class. Todd Scharkey of Kasson who had
a heat win under his belt had dominated much of the race. He had almost a
full straightaway lead ten laps into the race when he started lapping slower
cars. A late caution with five to go closed Jason Cummins of New Richland
and Mike Sorensen of Rochester up on his back bumper. Todd got a good run on
the restart and had Cummins and Sorensen lined up behind him and was looking
solid coming to the white flag when a small slip up in turn four cost him
dearly. Scharkey went up the hill in four and Jason and Mike went by
schuffling him back to what would be a third place finish. Cummins collected
his third feature win of the season at Lansing. Ben Mattick of Hayfield and
Dustin Steinbrink of Austin rounded out the top five. Jacob Dahle of
Morristown took home the classes other heat win.
In "S and S Auto Salvage Hornet" Racing action the Junior Hornet feature
went caution free as Jake Bigelow of Hayfield scored his sixth feature win
of the season. Jason Vogt of Rose Creek finished second followed by Garitt
Wytaske of Lansing, Jacob Stark of Austin, and Charlie Steinberg of Kasson.
Stark picked up the heat win for the Juniors. In the Senior Division it was
another sweep for Mike Blowers of Waseca. Blowers has made the division very
predictable. He scored his track leading twenty-fourth and twenty-fifth wins
of the season with another pair of wins. His feature win was his thirteenth
of the year and the sweep marked the twelfth time hes done that this year.
Gary Stahl of Kasson took home second followed by Michael Wytaske of
Lansing, Paul Korneman of Austin, and Kaitlyn Stark of Austin. Blowers could
become the first driver to clinch a 2009 Track Championship just by showing
up next week and pulling on the track as he has a 106 point lead after
friday night. The most points any driver could possibly get over two nights
would by 114 and with each driver being assured of at least ten show points
each week those would be enough to put him over the top at the start of the
night next week.
Race time is 7:30 every Friday Night at Chateau Raceway, just five miles
north of Austin, in Lansing.
