SPRING VALLEY, MN (May 29, 2010) - AA Electric Southern Minnesota Spring Challenge was on tap for the Memorial Weekend Special at Deer Creek Speedway. An absolutely beautiful day and a great field of United States Modified Touring Series Modifieds were on hand along with the WISSOTA Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds and Street Stocks for an action packed night of racing. EZ Fabricating built some beautiful special event trophies for the winners in each class while Randy and Patti Eastvold of Hanson Tire of LeRoy and Preston added $400.00 to the winner's check in all four classes on hand.
The BP WISSOTA Street Stocks pulled onto the speedway for the first feature event of the night with Cory Adams taking the lead at the drop of the green. Donny Ganz moved into second with Fred Prudoehl in third trying to work past Ganz. Cory Asmussen sat in fourth with Briana Grinstead in fifth early. With two down AJ Zvorak moved past Grinstead for fifth while Ganz and Prudoehl still looked for a way to the front. With four down Zvorak moved into fourth as Ganz took over the point. On the next lap Prudoehl worked under Adams for second. With six completed Zvorak set his sights on Adams for third and two laps later worked into third. Troy Voth and Karl Hewitt Jr raced for fifth with Voth taking over the spot as the first caution flew. ON the restart Ganz led with Zvorak in second. Voth and Adams raced for fourth with Voth taking the spot with eleven laps completed. Mike Blowers cracked the top five as he worked past Hewitt JR. for the position. Voth and Prudoehl were side by side for third with thirteen down as another caution flew. On the restart Zvorak slowly worked below Ganz for the lead as he took it to the checkers. Voth worked under Ganz on lap fifteen to finish second with Prudoehl, and Blowers rounding out the top five.
The Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were up next with Ric Fynbo taking the early lead. Greg Pfeifer JR., and Greg Happel were racing for second. Pfeifer JR., took control of the spot and on the next lap moved under Fynbo to take the lead. Then out of nowhere Cody Gardner shot below them both to lead lap two at the line. On lap four Bryan Hernandez shot under Fynbo, Jared Boumeester and Travis Krause to take over third. Up front Gardner looked like a veteran slowly pulling away from the field with Pfeifer JR. holding a good gap over the third place car of Hernandez. A untimely caution came out on lap 9 as Shaun Walski, Boumeester and Fynbo all got together with Walski taking a slow roll over onto his roof. On the restart Gardner led with Hernandez in second. Dustin Scott worked into the top five with ten completed. Up front Hernandez started pressuring Gardner for the lead. Eleven down saw Scott and Brandon Davis side by side for fourth. Up front Hernandez took the lead with Gardner now in second. Scott took over fourth and with two to go moved under Pfeiffer Jr. for the third spot. With Jerry Young cracking the top five at the finish.
Tony Bloom led the first lap of the US Army WISSOTA Super Stock feature event but on lap two he had his hands full as he went three wide with Jeff Brauer and Cole Queensland for the lead. The three raced for two laps three wide almost all the way around the track until Bloom dropped back to third. Queensland and Brauer continued their race with Queensland holding a slight edge while Brauer sat parked on his inside rear quarter. With four down Ross Dixon moved past Brauer and started to work on Queensland for the lead. Chad Halstrom moved into the top five with five completed. Dixon's mount suddenly slowed with seven laps completed and he pulled to the infield. ON the next lap a caution flew bunching the field back up. On the restart Queensland led with Brauer again tucking up to his inside quarter panel. With eleven down the race for third was strong with Kevin Hager and Halstrom trying to moved past Bloom for the spot. At the finish it was Queensland with the win, Brauer second, Hager, Halstrom and Bloom rounded out the top five.
The final feature of the night was the forty lap USMTS Feature with Ryan Ruter jumping out front early on. Nate Wasmund sat in second with Jason Krohn looking for a way past in third. Ruter was flying up front and started to pull away from the field with just three laps completed. Mike Sorensen worked into fourth and Rodney Sanders in fifth. With four completed Sorensen moved under Wasmund for third behind Krohn in second. With nine completed Ruter opened up a straightaway lead over the field while Tim Donlinger and Kelly Shryock raced side by side for fifth. With some really tight racing midpack and two wide just inside the top ten the fans were watching action everyone except up front as Ruter continued to pull away. Wasmund worked back around Sorensen to take back third with thirteen down and two laps later Shryock moved past Sorensen for fourth. With twenty down Ruter suddenly slowed as his right rear tire went flat sending him to the pits for a tire change and restarting at the back of the field. On the restart Krohn led with Wasmund in second until Donlinger past him for the position on lap twenty-two. Donlinger's momentum kept him moving as he pulled alongside of Krohn for the lead two laps later. ON lap twenty-six Donlinger took over the point while Zack VanderBeek moved into the top five after starting twenty-fifth. Krohn continued to challenge Donlinger for the lead but was unable to get an upper hand on him. Donlinger came home with the win and the $2400 payday.
