Foss and Matthees Duel it to the Checkers

by Bill Nelson

SPRING VALLEY, MN (July 17) - Dennis Hillson took the early lead in the high powered Altenburg Construction WISSOTA Late Model feature event with Joe Ludemann sitting in second early on.  Keith Foss worked past Nick Kramer to take over third on lap two as Ludemann and Hillson raced side by side for the lead on lap two.  Hillson held onto the top spot while they were still racing for third.  ON lap three Foss drove in hard and moved under Ludemann and Hillson to take over the second spot.  With six down Foss drove under Hillson to take the top spot while Matthees worked under Ludemann for third.  Matthees moved under Hillson to take second with six completed.  With ten laps completed Matthees showed his nose under Foss.  Further back Brad Waits was side by side with Ludemann for fifth while Mike Prochnow raced his way into third.  Matthees and Foss crossed the line with twelve completed in a dead heat.  The caution flew with sixteen down as Nick Herrick slowed on the front stretch and Kyle Jumbeck ran into the back of him with no place to go.  on the restart Matthees again raced under Foss crossing the line in a dead heat again.  Waits and Prochnow were in a good race for third.  But the action was up front as Foss held a couple foot lead every time across the finish line as the laps clicked off.  With eighteen complete Kelly Anderson and Adam Hensel were racing for fifth.  Foss finally gained a little advantage on lap twenty as the leaders caught lapped traffic.  At the line it was Foss, Matthees, Prochnow, Waits and Hensel in the top five.

Jason Cummins led out of two on the start of the EZ fabricating USRA Modified feature event with Bob Timm quickly moving into second.  Todd Scharkey and Lucas Schott raced for third.  A caution with one completed reset the race with Cummins leading, Schott moved under Timm to take over second with Joel Alberts in fourth and Scharkey now in fifth.  With four down Timm took over second while Alberts, Schott and Scharkey were three wide for third.  Scharkey and Schott battled for two laps before Scharkey took control of third.  Another caution flew with eight down.  Cummins led on the restart again on the start with Scharkey in second and Schott, Timm and Mike Sorensen now three wide for third.  Sorensen took third with Schott in fourth.  Timm worked back around Schott on lap ten while Scharkey worked hard to overtake Cummins for the lead.  Cummins was just a little stronger holding onto the lead as Sorensen moved up to make it a three car battle for the  lead with twenty completed.  The top three were in tight formation as they came upon lapped traffic with Cummins getting through cleanly.  Scharkey kept the pressure on him as Sorensen got jammed up by the slower car.  Cummins took home the win as he held off a hard driving Scharkey.

Ross Dixon made the long tow over and sat on the pole for the US ARMY WISSOTA Super Stock event and jumped out to an early lead.  A caution flew at the completion of lap one and Dixon pulled into the pits with a flat tire during the caution period.  On the restart Brain Fetting led with Kevin Hager and Cole Queensland battling for second while Jeff Brauer and Ryan Siegle raced for fourth.  The fourth place battle became a four car battle for second on lap four as they raced four wide through three and four.  Queensland took control of the second spot and set sail  for Fetting out front.  Another caution with four down saw Fetting and Queensland racing to the line for the lead.  Queensland took over the lead on lap six.  Siegle sat in third behind Fetting.  With seven down  Brauer challenged Siegle for the third spot and will ten down Brauer finally gained control of the spot.  Queensland was still out front by himself when Brauer moved up to race Fetting on lap thirteen.  Fetting lost the handle on his mount bringing out a caution flag.  On the restart Queensland led with Brauer in second applying steady pressure on the leader through the rest of the race.  Dan Gullikson worked into the top five as he sat in fourth late in the race followed by another long tow driver Nick Wranek from South Dakota.  Queensland held off Brauer to take home the win.

Veteran racer Larry Nelson led early in the Dirt Doctor trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modified division with a four wide battle for third going on early.  With two down Jared Happel took the lead away from Nelson who now had Greg Pfeifer Jr. and Brandon Davis to contend with for second.  Davis took over second with Pfeifer JR. in third.  The only caution of the event came out as Happel's mount went up in smoke ending his chances of a win.  Davis took control of the race on the restart and pulled away from the field.  Pfeifer Jr. had Mike Paulson all over him on the restart with Paulson taking over the second spot  Nelson and Ric Fynbo battled for the fourth spot late in the race but Davis was all alone up front three-wheeling his mount around the speedway.  Paulson, Pfeifer JR., Fynbo and Nelson rounded out the top five.

Nicholas Schwebach led out of two on the opening lap of the BP WISSOTA Street Stock feature.  Unfortunately Schwebach brought out the first caution as he spun his mount in turn four.  On the ensuing restart Donny Ganz, Fred Prudoehl and Dan Holland raced for the lead.  Holland took the lead as Mike Blowers made it a three car race for second now with Danny Hanson directly behind their race.  With three laps completed Holland led with Ganz looking to his inside.  Behind them Hanson, Blowers and Troy Voth were three wide for third.    With five laps completed Ganz was out from with Holland and Blowers racing for second.  Behind them Hanson, Chanda Fjorden-Nord , Prudoehl nod Voth were four wide for fourth.  As usual this didn't work too well as the Prudoehl machine spun bringing out the caution.    On the restart Ganz led with Holland in second.  Blowers and Voth were racing for third.  Blowers took third on lap nine.  Out of four on the next lap Blowers took over the lead with Hanson, Holland and Ganz racing for second.  Ganz got crossed  up as Hanson took over second.  Eleven laps down Hanson was working hard to work past Blowers for the lead.  Hanson got his car inside going through the corners but out of the corners Blowers was able to hold him off.  With Hanson working low on him Blowers decided to move to the top of the track.  Blowers had the speed up top but bobbled coming through three and four on the white flag lap.  The two touched as they exited four with Hanson crossing the line first but Blowers was credited with the win and Hanson knocked back to second for the rough driving on the last lap.  It was a great finish as the two battled for the win.

John Warrington and Scott Demmer battled for the lead in the Hinz Trucking USRA b-Modified feature early.    Greg Mattick and Warrington battle for second on lap two as Demmer took over the lead.  With three down the battle for second became a four car race with Warrington, Colter Deutsch, Shaun Walski and Mattick four wide for third.  Up front Brandon Hare was now challenging Demmer for the top spot.  A caution with five down saw hare lead on the restart, Demmer in second and Jason Schlangen working into third.  Another caution with eight down saw Hare lead Deutsch and Walski were side by side for third but they worked past Demmer as their battle now became a race for second.  Deutsch and Walski stayed side by side until sixteen down when Walski took control of second. Kylie Kath worked into fifth as the laps wore down with Hare taking home the win.

Matthew Schliesman led the Truck Country Junior Slingshots with Derek Clement working into second.  Dustin Sorensen and Lexi Schott battle for third until Schott lost the handle on her machine but kept going at the rear of the field.  Clement pressured Schliesman over the remaining laps but was unable to get around the leader as Schliesman took home the win.

IN the Pee-Wee slingshots Garrett Koster jumped out front with a three wide battle for second.  Spencer Ihrke took control of second with Jim Chisholm in third.  With three down Ihrke got sideways with Chisholm straightening him back out as they exited turn two.  going into three Ihrke drove in under Chisholm and the two touched with Ihrke spinning out and bringing out the caution.  On the restart Koster jumped out front with Jackson Hale moving into second.  Chisholm sat in third as the laps wound down.  hale moved alongside of Koster on the last lap and powered by for the win coming out of turn four.

Lexi Schott led early in the Senior division of the Truck Country Slingshots with Jeremy Paulson in second running up high.  A caution on lap two saw Nia Gardner and Paulson racing for second behind Schott.  Gardner took the spot for two laps until Paulson worked back into the second spot.  With seven down Paulson and Schott went side by side into one with Paulson taking the lead out of two. Paulson stayed out front through the rest of the race with Schott in second.  Dustin Sorensen moved into third late in the race with tenth starting Matthew Schliesman in finishing in fourth.
