Eckert Bags World Of Outlaws Late Model Series Victory No. 3
Of The Season!
BOLIVAR, Mo. – May 23, 2006 - Rick Eckert of York, Pennsylvania became the first
three-time winner of the 2006 World Of Outlaws Late Model Series Tuesday night
after a dominating run in the $10,000 to win ‘Bank of Bolivar 50’ at Bolivar
Speedway USA in Bolivar, Missouri. Driving the Raye Vest Excavating/J&J Steel
No. 24 Raye Vest Rocket Chassis/Cornett Racing Engines/Ford Fusion, ‘Scrub’
blasted from his fifth starting slot in the main event to the lead on lap 6 and
never looked back taking the win by 2.786 seconds.
Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pennsylvania worked his way into second after starting
15th aboard the Lester Buildings/Corry Rubber/All-Star Performance No. 1* Chub
Frank Racing Rocket Chassis/Custom Racing Engines/Chevrolet Monte Carlo.
Finishing third, after leading the first 5 circuits of the event was Steve
Francis of Ashland, Kentucky driving the MOPAR Performance Parts/Valvoline/Freeport
Recycling No. 15 Steve Francis Motorsports Rocket Chassis/Stanton Racing
Engines/Dodge Charger.
Wendell Wallace of Batesville, Arkansas drove the J&J Steel/JFR Graphics No. 88
Wendell Wallace Racing GRT Race Cars/Gaerte Engines/Pontiac GTO to a fourth
place finish after starting eleventh. Defending World Of Outlaws Late Model
Series champion Billy Moyer of Batesville, Arkansas finished fifth aboard the
J&J Steel/Banner Valley Hauling/McCarthy’s One Hour Heating and Air No. 21 Billy
Moyer Racing C.J. Rayburn Race Cars/Pro Power/Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS.
Rounding out the top ten finishers were Clint Smith of Senoia, Georgia in sixth
trailed by Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, IA in seventh. Eighth spot went to
Shane Clanton of Locust Grove, GA followed by Jimmy Mars of Menominee, Wisconsin
and Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, Florida.
“It was a beautiful night here in Missouri”, stated the very happy winner. “The
car was really good most of the night. We hurt an oil pump after time trials and
with the help of Mark Richards and his crew we were able to get it changed just
in time for the heat race. We finished second in the heat and the car was real
maneuverable in the dash so we didn’t change much on it for the main event. We
were a little bit softer on tires than some of the other guys so I figured we
would try and get out front early and then try to fend them off at the end.
“Turns out I didn’t have to hold off anybody. The car was just so good. I could
change lanes anytime I wanted too and the car was just as fast. This track was
nothing but multi-laned. There had to have been four to five grooves out there.
It was an excellent race track.”
Josh Richards and Steve Francis brought the 24 car starting field to the green
flag with Francis winning the race off fo turn two to lead lap 1over Richards,
Moyer, Eckert and Birkhofer. Eckert blasted past Moyer on lap 3 and then set his
sights on Richards picking him off one lap later. Eckert quickly ran down
Francis pulling ahead exiting turn four to lead lap 6. Once in front Eckert
simply pulled away from his pursuers and was never threatened the rest of the
way despite racing through lapped traffic from lap 10 to lap 31.
With the race staying green for the first 31 circuits the racing was nothing
short of intense behind the Eckert. Francis continued to hold down the second
spot as lap 15 was recorded with Tim McCreadie now third ahead of Mars and Moyer
followed by Wallace, Birkhofer, Pearson Jr., Richards and Clanton.
By the halfway point McCreadie was now in second but trailed Eckert by nearly 3
seconds. Francis sat third with Mars still fourth. Wallace sat fifth over Moyer,
Birkhofer, Pearson Jr., Frank and Richards. The yellow lights would flash at lap
31 when the driveshaft on Richards car broke sending the 2005 World of Outlaws
Late Model Series ‘Rookie of the Year’ pitside for repairs. The youngster would
return to the event many laps down.
The slow down never threatened Eckert as he simply powered away from McCreadie
on the restart. At lap 35 McCreadie’s car started to belch blue smoke and at lap
41 the engine finally gave up the ghost dropping McCreadie out of the race as he
rolled to a stop bringing out the races second and last caution.
The final laps were a donnybrook as Frank scratched and clawed his way into
second with four laps to go while Wallace, Moyer and Smith hooked up in a three
car battle. Wallace gained a car length on Moyer at the finish while Moyer just
nipped Smith for the fifth spot at the finish.
The $45,000 purse event drew 26 cars to the high-banked 3/8ths mile clay
speedplant. The very large crowd on hand saw Richards establish a new single-lap
track record at 14.740 seconds. Taking heat race wins were Birkhofer, Moyer and
Francis. Smith copped the ‘B’ Main event while Richards won the pole dash.
‘Rookie of the Year’ candidate Garrett Durrett of Simsboro, Louisiana had a
night to forget. Durrett slammed the turn one wall during time trials but
finished his time trial run despite heavy right side damage. Missing the
transfer from the heat and the ‘B’ Main by one spot Durrett used a provisional
starting spot to make the main event. After the field saluted the crowd in the
four-wide parade formation Durrett’s car suddenly stopped. After a push from a
safety truck failed to fire Durrett’s car the youngster headed pitside and
failed to take the green flag. Inspection showed that the battery shorted out
probably due to damage received in the time trial slap of the wall according to
crew chief Randall Edwards.
The World of Outlaws Late Model Series will travel to the upper Midwest for
three $10,000 to win events in three nights. River Cities Speedway in Grand
Forks, North Dakota presents ‘The 7 Clans 50’ Tuesday, May 30 followed by the
‘North Central 50’ at North Central Speedway in Brainerd, Minnesota scheduled
for Wednesday, May 31 before wrapping up Thursday, June 1 at Deer Creek Speedway
in Spring Valley, Minnesota for the ‘27th Featherlite Trailers Gopher 50’.
