Landan takes first feature win with WOW Sprint cars
By Dusty Luthy
LEBANON, MO. (July 29, 2006) - The Lebanon I-44 Speedway isn't where
Foster Landan intended to be Saturday night. But fate stepped in and made the
speedway the place where he was supposed to be for the Winged Outlaw Warriors
Sprint car feature.
"We were on our way to Little Rock and then we decided to come," Landan, of
Collinsville, Okla., said, "which I'm very happy we did."
Landan won WOW first-place trophy and $1,200 in a 28-car field of 360 Winged
Sprint cars.
Zack Chappel, who is also from Oklahoma, was the one to call Landan and tell him
about the race, Landan said. Chappel won the race the previous night at Bolivar
Speedway.
Landan, who said he normally races with the American Sprint Car Series, had
neither raced at the track nor even run with the WOW, much less taken a feature
win with them.
"The car was set up perfect, it was right on the money," he said. "Had plenty of
side bite, it was perfect for the track. Everything was right."
The 20-car feature started out in chaos as a four-car pile up on the start
red-flagged the cars. On the restart, Landan got the jump after originally
starting the feature seventh.
The pile up collected Randy Martin, of California, Mo., and sent him tailback.
In the past two visits to I-44 Speedway, Martin took the wins for both races.
Dustin Barks of Farmington started the feature second and that is where he
finished as well. But Barks wasn't disappointed in second.
"This is the best finish for me ever," he said.
Barks is in his first season in a 360 Winged Sprint, formerly racing mini
sprints. He said he has raced in about 10 WOW races this season, hitting as many
as he can.
Chappel's night at the race track was a struggle. Coming off the win at Bolivar,
Chappel failed to qualify to the feature through the heat races, but won the B
feature to start near the back of the field.
Position changes after the pile up on lap one put Chappel up several spots.
After taking the high groove on the track during the feature, Chappel secured a
fourth-place finish.
Eric Shrock of Lake Ozark took third and Mike Trent of Marshall took fifth.
It was double the Winged Sprint car action with the 305 Sprints in appearance as
well.
Jonathan Cornell of Sedalia took home the win. Cornell also took the win in the
previous 305 Sprint car appearance. Cornell started the feature on the pole and
led the race flag-to-flag.
The race appeared to be one of attrition with 14 cars starting the feature and
only six making it to the final lap.
The Factory Stock feature saw points-leader Lake Mooneyham of Republic take
another win. David Hendrix of Buckhorn followed close behind, often going
side-by-side with Mooneyham in the corners, but Mooneyham was able to hold him
off.
The Bomber race provided 12 competitive laps of feature racing with Jason Huey
coming out the winner.
Huey started the feature ninth and by the second lap, had worked his way to
third with Joe Francis coming close behind. On the fifth lap, Huey went high to
take the lead from Dennis Harmon. Two laps later, Francis went high to take
second.
Francis and Huey continued their battle, going side-by-side in the turns. On lap
10, Francis got a little too high in turn four, allowing Huey a clean victory.
In the Rookie class, J.C. Morton was declared the winner after Brian Miller was
found in violation of a tech rule. Morton and Miller raced clean and
side-by-side for nearly the entire feature until Morton bobbled slightly
allowing Miller to edge him out.
Up next: Racing returns to the speedway Saturday night with a full racing card.
Late Models, Modified and Super Stocks will return for a regular points race, in
addition to the street stock cars.
